Why linen stitch? 🧶❤️🌺
And above all: When?
Linen stitch produces a dense, not very stretchy fabric, which will lie flat without curling.
Because it has a much tighter gauge than stocking stitch or garter stitch, it takes a little longer to knit but has some very interesting uses.
I’ve used it for coasters (find the free pattern for the Honky Tonk Coasters on my website), I really like using it for button bands and at the moment I’m exploring how its gauge can be combined with other stitches. Stay tuned!
This is how to work the linen stitch:
Right side: knit a stitch, slip the next one purlwise with the yarn in front (and repeat)
Wrong side: slip the knitted stitch purlwise with the yarn in the back, purl the next stitch (and repeat)
The linen stitch is quite unique among knitting stitches: it is not stretchy and it does not curl at the edges. In other words, it is the id
This is like knitting moss stitch and I am so here for it
