Discourse topic #137: if I write a story about a human and a space alien having sex, but the space alien's version of sex is so esoteric that the human is literally incapable of understanding or experiencing it as such and therefore cannot meaningfully consent, do I need to tag for noncon?
Is the sex an activity comprehensible to humans, that the human doesn't experience as sexual? E.g. sex is some kind of elaborate ritual that involves walking behind a waterfall 3 times with a sacred flame and then whacking each other with pool noodles. In that case, it's a matter of whether or not the alien discloses that it's a sex thing.
Or, is it an activity that literally can't be explained to the human beforehand because there is no human analog for it? In this case, the human can't consent to the activity because they can't comprehend what it is.
I think it could be further subdivided based upon whether the problem is an inability for the alien to explain/communicate the activity itself, or an inability for the alien to explain/communicate what the activity means.
Wait, is that a further subdivision, or did I just say the same thing twice?
I mean okay, I think "inability to explain/communicate what the activity means" might refer to a couple things as well: either the inability to communicate that the thing is a sex thing from the alien's POV, or the inability to explain/communicate what it will or might feel like from the human's POV.
The first one would be like the pool noodle situation above, but the second one would be like, something incomprehensible happens that is experienced as intimate or potentially violating.
I think you can consent to something that can't be fully explained in advance.
If the alien says "This is a sex thing to me, and i cannot describe how it will feel to you/in your language, but it is intimate/intense/potentially violating", then it's perfectly valid consent to say "Go ahead anyway, I'll stop you if I don't like it."
I feel like this falls under the Risk-Aware Consensual Kink umbrella.
the hypothetical human could potentially not understand what they're agreeing to, and still meaningfully consent to it, as long as "not understanding what they're agreeing to" is part of what they know they're consenting to after they've been made to understand whatever it is within their power to understand.
going into an activity without knowing what it involves is riskier, but taking that risk is a choice a human can make for themself.
