Everyone should know, in the 70s Nichelle Nichols went to NASA and asked why there weren’t black astronauts in the pipeline, and they said, “Come recruit for us.” And she did.
“From the late 1970’s until the late 1980’s, NASA employed Nichelle Nichols to recruit new astronaut candidates. Many of her new recruits were women or members of racial and ethnic minorities, including Guion Bluford (the first African-American astronaut), Sally Ride (the first female American astronaut), Judith Resnik (one of the original set of female astronauts, who perished during the launch of the Challenger on January 28, 1986), and Ronald McNair (the second African-American astronaut, and another victim of the Challenger accident).“ (x)

Really interesting when you think bout how most plastic surgeons are men, and almost all major cosmetic companies are owned by old white dudes
But uh most of the people who get plastic surgeries are women, and cosmetics are almost exclusively bought and worn by women.
The beauty industry really is just a direct pipeline of cash going from women’s wallets to men’s pockets. Men create beauty standards for women, then make women pay out their own hard earned cash to live up to the beauty standards men create.

I don’t know what writer needs to hear this
but you can write something very plain.
You don’t have to write some genre-redefining masterpiece. You can write a story about two people very simply falling in love. You can just write a story about a person going to the store. You could, if you were so inclined, just re-write Star Wars but like, make all the names start with M.
Don’t let the fear of not-writing something transcendent stop you from just writing.
It is okay not to want to do the same thing for the rest of your life, even if you were once passionate about it and envisioned yourself always doing it. It is okay to change your mind, your passions and your life.
Recently a couple of the autistic kids I work with have inspired me with openly, unapologetically owning it.
Like one kid saying “if I don’t make eye contact it’s because I find that hard and it’s easier to concentrate on what you’re saying if I’m not looking at you.”
And another one asking for clarification of an ambiguous statement to check understanding instead of just hoping for the best.
And one saying “I’m going to stim now, this conversation is hard”
I have so much respect for them for being able to voice those things! It’s inspired me to try harder to do that instead of masking until I meltdown because I’m so scared of how people will react.
This is what I wanted to be in the 80s and 90s and people would pull me aside to tell me it was inappropriate.
It was revealed that 90% of autistics have trauma from repressed stims, not to mention those who were put through ABA.
If we can start to raise more and more autistic kids who are openly, unapologetically autistic, think about how powerful that would be for our future.

i love that we and cats share pareidolia (seeing patterns where they dont exist), but instead of seeing faces in everyday objects like us, they see snakes
that computer cord? snake. string? small snake. cucumber? short fat straight snake
snake pareidolia is one of the strongest things in human minds too! people report freezing mid-stride before being consciously aware of a snake in front of them, and the same happens with coiled rope, etc. in humans and other primates. it’s even been proposed that the need to detect snakes was a factor in the development of primates’ insanely good color eyesight
It’s because snakes are wonderful and we must stop and admire them at any cost
