Also applies to "AI" "artists" and "musicians."

friend sent me an Instagram reel yesterday with 1000s of likes that was basically like "pride and prejudice is timeless actually because it's about an autism4autism romance š„°" and then the creator proceeded to cite moments in the book and film where Lizzie and Darcy are "socially awkward" and....listen. I'm far from an Austen scholar, but I have taught Austen novels as an educator and this kind of psycho-pop analysis that views characters as individuals with autonomy over their actions, rather than tools in a story written at a particular time to say something about that time, pisses me off more than I can say without sounding like an asshole. I'm sorry but Darcy isn't rude and awkward and even cruel to Lizzie because he has autism, he says and does those things because he's a wealthy upper class land owning man raised to see a middle class woman from a large family with no male heirs like Elizabeth as inherently beneath him which he expresses to her multiple times because it is socially acceptable for him to do so in a society where someone like him is privileged above almost all others. He is "socially awkward" around her because of misogyny and classism (PREJUDICE) and she is "socially awkward" around him because a woman of her standing at that time simply wouldn't have had much to do with the gentry but to actually push back against the shit that Darcy says would be social suicide for her whole family so she protests the only way she can which is refusing his advances (PRIDE). not to be the "context collapse is the death of media literacy" guy. But this is the problem with the kind of head empty, let people enjoy things, if I can't relate to it what's the point type crowd. Youse think you're being so quirky justifying incoherent and anachronistic interpretations with your rampant individualism, ensuring that other people never confront anything that challenges them in these stories like patriarchal misogyny and classism. Pride and Prejudice becomes an "autism4autism romance", completely undermining the historical context of its status as one of the great social satires about the class and gender politics that Austen so expertly observed around her. This attitude is why we have nonsensical historical dramas that actively hate history like fucking edgy bdsm "Wuthering Heights", Bridgerton, The Buccaneers, and even a 2025 Frankenstein movie where the monster is just misunderstood and does no wrong uwu etc. because individual relatability and catharsis is king over anything actually saying anything about anything now. Everything is relatable and nothing is meaningful.
Since some of you don't seem to understand how this 'new notes' thing works, I'll break it down:
I'm the OP. I'm making this post. If you like, comment, reblog (without comment) on this post, then I'm the one who will see all those notes in my activity page.
However...
If you reblog (with comment), I will get a notification that you did that, but any likes/comments/reblogs (without comment) you get on that reblog will only be shown to you. As OP I won't see them.
If someone adds a reblog (with comment) to your reblog...as OP I won't see that. I won't see any of those notes in my activity page.
Basically, if someone with a large following makes a comment, then they will get all the notes and OP will see nothing. If OP has said something silly because they're, y'know, 21 and it happens, and then someone reblogs it onto the dash of someone with a large following who then dunks on them for fun? OP doesn't see it, doesn't get notes for it, but they're gonna get the harrassment for it in their inbox.
If I, someone with a 5 digit follower count, reblog something to correct misinformation on Ancient Egypt, then OP will never see it unless it was on the original post, but I will continue to get notes on that post even though it's not my post. If I reblog fanart, or just art in general, with a comment like 'Oh this is so lovely!' then OP will not see any of the notes from people reblogging it from me. They'll only see my reblog. So it's possible for an art post by someone else to have 200 notes for them, but 9000 for someone who reblogs it with a comment, and the OP artist will have no idea it's been seen by that many people.
It's killing blow to the community we've built here, by someone higher up who doesn't understand that being able to see all the comments and reblogs is what makes this site the place I keep coming back to.
That's what sucks.
I encourage people to go to tumblr's support page, select contact support, and then in the dropdown menu select 'Feedback' and leave polite and constructive feedback (for those of you who enjoy 'emails worded politely but are a strong 'are you an idiot?', try that way of wording it). They're more likely to listen to you if you're not an asshole about it. I've already gone and done this, and I hope others will too.
to give you an idea of how tremendously fucking stupid this update is, look at the real notes on Tumblr's announcement post on mobile (left) versus the updated one on desktop (right):
the left, original way of displaying notes shows exactly how many notes the post has from every single interaction: reblogs, likes and replies. but the right, post-update way only shows direct interactions on that version of the post. so every person who saw this post from Tumblr and reblogged it not from them, but someone else...or replied to it, or liked it...that doesn't show to the OP. it's counted as separate notes.

"fandom is dying," they whine as they stab artists and writers in the chest with discourse knives and harassment screws. "why isn't anyone making content for me to greedily consume for free as I make the experience worse for them and everyone around me?"
I don't even care how much this makes me sound like an "Old (Wo)Man Yells At Clouds" meme...it's because no one practices fandom etiquette anymore, and people are more interesting in chasing clout/monetizing and "going viral" than they are contributing to or participating in fandom community and culture.
I've been in fandom for more than three decades. I had a geocities address. I remember listservs, internet relay chatrooms, web rings, and fanzines (the kind where that was the ONLY option to get fanfic from some fandoms, not the fun gift exchanges they are now).
Fandom has never been a perfect utopia of respect and peace. There is always, always, always a toxic underbelly, no matter how chill the fandom is. There are always absolute assholes whose only motivation is to upset as many people as possible. There's always racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, and a host of other societal ills, dialed up to eleven.
However.
It. Has. Not. Always. Been. This. BAD. Find your Fandom Olds. The ones who can remember fandom 10, 15, 20 years ago. They will tell you that fandom is just different now. No, not everyone adhered to "ship and let ship." Yes, there were trolls. No, everyone did not stay in their lane. But nowhere near to this degree. Not to the point where curating your fandom space to screen out the negativity is damn near a full time job. Not to the point where content creators feel like they have to walk on eggshells if they do get attention, or like they're just screaming into the void and getting nothing back.
We're a dead fandom even on the best of days, but man, does this ring true... I miss ye olde fandom.
the fact that generative A.I. has created a completely new fundamental doubt in reality (checking to see if an artwork we see is manmade or not) and doubt in the instinct of enjoying art is unforgivable. its sickeningly tragic, and i mean it. NOTHING is worth this price and i hope that everyone will one day realize this.
"there is no way you're not using chatgpt for at least a few things here and there no matter your stance on it" what the FUCK are you talking about
media literacy would automatically go up 100% if people knew how to consume stories without self-inserting themselves into the characters' shoes. "if i were him..." you're NOT. you may relate to his story, his past, his traits, his quirks, his identity but the moment you start treating the story accepting what you feel/think as what the character feels/thinks, you're misunderstanding the story.
dont know how to say this without sounding like one of those "people are too soft these days" motherfuckers but some of you are incapable of interacting with anything that does not coddle you & makes you feel Good about your own Goodness. if you know what i mean
also i said it in the tags but i feel it needs reiterating: watching tv is not activism. fighting over fictional stories is not activism. attacking people for not interacting with fictional stories in a way you deem Acceptable is not activism. you are being annoying & i personally dont want to play toys with you anymore
