I'm having some difficulties with an ongoing fic of mine that gained more audiences than I expected it to.
1. Some readers left comments that was basically their headcanon about the characters.
"Oh, but they are xxx" "They are not like that", etc
2. Some begged me not to make the characters do this or that. One of these comments was longer than the chapter itself.
"Please don't make A do xxx", etc.
3. Some told me they hate the top character and they don't deserve the bottom, and made effort to let me know each time I update.
4. Some told me they hate me because I tend to end each chapter with cliffhanger. I'm not a native English speaker and the word 'hate' is such a strong word in my native language, it makes me sad each time someone put it in the comment.
I already added the tag 'Dark A" to imply that my portrayal of the top character is not the sweet kind. There are a lot of fics in the same fandom which portrayed the bottom character as doomed and miserable. I also added a note at the latest chapter that I'm just writing fic that I want to read, and while I appreciate the interest, I don't appreciate such comments. I still get them. "Please do not make Dark A that Dark!"
I don't get what I've done wrong...
At this point, I'm considering on deleting the fic or just discontinuing it.
Where did I go wrong...?
Oh anon *hugs* You didn't do anything wrong at all!!! 💗
You wrote a story you were interested in. You tagged it to indicate what you were writing. You even added an author's note to make it clear. You did everything right.
The problem here is that people are reading your fic when they don't actually want to. I don't know why anyone would spend time reading something they don't like because that's a waste of time and energy.
I suspect that someone out there is encouraging people to leave these comments on your work in order to harass you into stopping. That's often the root cause when there are multiple people leaving these kinds of comments.
I recommend changing the settings on your work so that only logged-in users can comment on your work. You can do this in the privacy settings of the fic itself. You can also disallow all comments if it feels safer for you.
You can also go to your work and look at the comments. Every comment from a logged-in user will have a Block button on it.
Once you block a user, they will no longer be able to comment or kudos on your fics. In my opinion, these particular readers have probably lost the privilege to comment on your fics.
If you change your mind later, you can unblock them from your Preferences page.
There are people out there who don't like dark fic. That's okay. They don't have to read it. What's not okay is trying to make you stop writing it.
I totally understand if you decide you want to delete or orphan or just abandon the fic, anon. You were writing this because you enjoyed the story. You didn't write it to hear people tell you they hate it.
If you decide to keep going, please do block those individuals at the very least. You don't need to hear from them anymore. 💗
I would also recommend enabling comment moderation so you can approve comments before they go public. This usually deters the worst of people who want to leave nasty remarks because it has to go through you before anyone else can see it, and most people just want others to see how much they dislike something others enjoy. I used to get a lot of nasty comments on a particular fic before I started doing this and it managed to make those same haters lose interest. Don't worry fellow author, this isn't an issue of your writing but rather other people not knowing how to have boundaries. Sending all the love! 💕
when i was a tiny baby queer (aka a 24-year-old), i went to my first pride festival probably three months after i kicked ex-gay therapy to the curb and came out to my parents. being the people they are, my parents came with me. they weren’t really sure about this whole gay thing, but they loved me and wanted me to be safe and happy and wanted to be involved in what was important to me, so they came along. (i also think my mother still might have thought i might get drugged or murdered or beaten by a protester of which there were plenty.)
anyway i wanted a memento of my first pride, you know, and this one vendor was selling keyrings, and i liked it, so i bought one. do you remember those italian charm bracelets that were all the rage like 10-15 years ago? it was a keychain like that, and it had a rainbow rooster, a rainbow cat, and then just a rainbow, and so I bought it.
i run into my mom a couple of vendors over and she goes oh you bought something? what’d you get? so i showed her, and i was like, “I’m not sure why it’s a rooster and a cat. Seems kind of random. But I liked the rainbows.”
and my mom, who was some form of minister’s wife for most of my childhood and teenagerhood, stares at me like she thinks i’m joking.
“What?” i say.
“…it’s a cock and a pussy, Jules,” she says flatly, and that is the story of how i died at the age of 24 while attending my first pride festival.
I love how every June this one gets dug up and passed around again, lmao.
oh no is this what we’re doing now
…relic…

Your occasional reminder. 😏
Yeah, five months or so on from the last reminder, this is probably as good a time as any to reblog... :)
Hello, I am Passeriform here and was on Twitter and am on Bluesky and on Discord, and I am Rhyolight on AO3. I would like to be in a Discord with mostly sane, mostly thoughtful people about Heated Rivalry. If anyone would like to invite me?

is russian junior hockey actually worse than canada’s? because that’s how it’s always portrayed in fics but everything ive come to learn about canadian jr hockey tells me the opposite.
I have not found that much English-language information about the Russian junior hockey system so I don’t really know. we do have a TON of well-reported information about the canadian junior leagues and we know that junior teams can be horrible cesspools where sexual assault, brutal hazing and bullying, abuse of power by coaches and other adults etc has historically been able to flourish largely unchecked. I would assume that any really intense youth sports league where there’s a LOT of money on the line (and a lot of adults willing to look the other way) could get very ugly very quickly. here’s an article about physical abuse on one Soviet-era youth hockey team… maybe if you dig a bit you can find more recent sources?
the fact that hudson mentioned connor while accepting his award is yet another reminder of how much love they have for each other
i love them both so much, they deserve all the recognition in the world
It occurs to me that there are people who weren’t on this website in 2012 and therefore never saw the magical gif that you can actually hear:
It’s been over five years and that still impresses the hell out of me.
the best fanfiction you've ever read was written by a woman in her 40s before she made dinner for her kids. it was written by a teenager after school when they should've been studying for a history test. and a barista came up with the idea while they cleaned the espresso machine and busser fact-checked it on their break and the post-doc edited between writing grant proposals and the nurse apologized for typos in the notes after a long shift and behind every drabble and one-shot and multi-chapter fic there is a person with a wonderful and interesting and chaotic life and it is such a privilege that we get to be apart of it because they decided to do this thing we all share, for fun.

seeing people say "this trope has been done to death" as if that's ever stopped anyone from eating bread. BREAD HAS BEEN DONE TO DEATH FOR LITERALLY THOUSANDS OF YEARS AND WE STILL WANT MORE BREAD. write your chosen one AU. write your coffee shop meet-cute. write your 47th iteration of "there was only one bed" because guess what??? we're still hungry.
I got lichens growing on one side of my car because I park in the same direction every day. Any chance they'll damage the paint or can I leave them?
Yeah, they probably will. Or more correctly, they already have. But I am on team lichen in this debate so I would argue that you should leave them, paint job be damned. But that is totally just me.
everyone has paint on their car. how many people can say they have lichen.
Plus when was the last time the paint on your car converted carbon dioxide in oxygen??? (probably) Never! Lichens>paint
