Drinking soda is better than drinking nothing all day. Eating ice cream for dinner is better than eating nothing for dinner. Eating salsa is better than having no produce in your diet at all.
Water is way more hydrating than soda, but soda is more hydrating than nothing. A balanced meal is way more nutritious than ice cream, but ice cream is more nutritious than nothing.
Something is better than nothing. Some hydration is better than no hydration. Some nutrients are better than no nutrients. Some produce is better than no produce.
Don't let societally imposed food guilt trick you into believing that nothing is a better choice. Nourishing your body, however you can, is always the better choice. Fed is best. Always.
food has no moral value. being fed does.

hey nonbinary parents u kno how there’s shortened terms for mother and father but no good shortened terms for parent?? well i have the solution for you!!! instead of “parent” u can call urself “guardian” which can be shortened to “guard” and then when ur kid says things like “sorry i can’t go my guard says no” they sound rich and mysteriously important and u dont get misgendered and everyone wins
Additionally, when your kid has a bad influence trying to get them to do something they know you would be against they could say “Sorry, I don’t want to let my guard down” which is both mysterious AND a pun
When it comes to being a traumatized young adult and doing adult things like doing the dishes for the first time I think the most counterproductive advice you can give someone like that is to "step out of their comfort zone." There's a point where discomfort required for the learning zone easily gets pushed into the danger zone especially for someone who was punished using chores.
I see a lot of people make fun of "that one roomate who doesn't do dishes" which I get why it's annoying and I unfortunately was one of those roomates when I moved out of my parent's house and was learning how to live like a human being for the first time. Obviously I've grown since then and can do the dishes without a struggle, but never once was "stepping out of my comfort zone" a part of that growth.
Asking someone to just plainly be uncomfortable when their discomfort to a situation makes them feel shame, abject terror or threatens to make them spiral is bad advise from an unempathetic lense. It doesn't factor in that the discomfort isn't just typical dislike for chores but it's a deeply psychological struggle.
But of course the dishes still need to get done so what's there to do?
What worked for me personally was interrogating exactly what it was that made me avoidant and learning how to untangle those complex feelings as well as accomodate for the unavoidable. I ruled out the screaming and the violence and constant emotional abuse, as my parents were no longer in my life to inflict it but there were still a lot of things that needed examination.
For example, a thing that made me avoid doing the dishes was the cereal that would get stuck to the bowls. It wasn't just a sensory problem for me so much as an emotional hurdle. I was expected to ge the dishes done without complaint and if I left a difficult dish to soak and accidentally forgot about it my parents would scream at me or hurt me for being lazy, so often when there was cereal stuck to a bowl I would have to resort to scraping it off with my fingernails, which often led to my nails tearing or getting hard bits of food jammed up into my nail bed regularly.
As I was beginning my first steps into adulthood I started asking questions about the process. Why was soaking a bowl such a bad thing? Why didn't my parents just buy steel wool? Why was I just expected to power through difficult chores rather than come up with an obvious solution? Why did they expect me to just hurt myself every time I did the dishes and why did they get violent if I cried because I was in pain?
It wasn't the tasks of doing dishes that bothered me so much, it was uncovering all the little daily ways my parents would communicate that they didn't love me. They could have gotten steel wool from the dollar store but they didn't because my bloody nails were inconsequential to them.
So no, stepping out of my comfort zone did not fix my avoidance to doing the dishes, but interrogating my trauma and getting to the bottom of the issue helped me realize that I was in control now and I was more than capable of making simple accommodations and standing up for myself. Taking control over my life and fighting for myself made it so when I do need to step out of my comfort zone it feels like a mild irritation rather than a life or death scenario.
So now I do the dishes and it's almost completely stress free, it's faster and it takes way less elbow grease because I love myself enough to spend a couple of bucks on steel wool.
So if you're a young 18-20 something, take control, fight for yourself, but please do the dishes.
daily affirmations: i am a tube. i am a tube that contains smaller tubes. nutrients flow into one end and expell out the other. deuterostomes have the superior digestive system. i am perfect for hydrodynamic propulsion and ram feeding. i am a worm that grew a human around it. i am a primordial mech suit made to carry tubes. i don't need to show up to my court summons.
This may be controversial but it's been driving me up the wall. Ribbit's abstraction was Jax's fault, but her mental health was not his responsibility.
I've watched the finale a handful of times at this point and I've seen some people try to state that Jax isolated Ribbit from everyone else when that simply isn't true. He told her not to talk to anyone about what exactly went down more specifically alluding to him opening up about his vulnerability, but Ribbit never had to. She didn't have to spill a bunch of Jax's secrets to someone, she could have just talked to someone about how no longer being close to her friend was making her feel but she didn't. She could have talked Caine into pairing her up in a team of three if she was the odd one out or asked someone in the circus in advance to team up with her. Literally nobody else had beef with her.
And don't get me wrong, it's not like I'm not sympathetic to her isolation or her mental health, I get it I really do. She was a part of the LDS church presumably her whole life, and decided to walk away from all of it. And a huge part of the equation that I think a lot of people are overlooking (in my opinion at least) is before Ribbit even made an appearance in the show people reached out to Gooseworx and asked her what Ribbit's pronouns were because at that time her gender wasn't even confirmed and Goose responded saying her pronouns are she/they. It never came up in the show but given that she decided to walk away from mormonism and her parents, her (albiet slightly ambiguous) queerness may have played a roll in that dynamic. She walked away from everything she was taught to believe, possibly losing her faith her family and her community all at the same time which is an unimaginably painful experience. I've watched the effects of what it does to someone in real time and it's fucking devastating, so Jax rejecting her and then cutting her out of his life probably added to that specific trauma. She was valid to feel shitty about it all. But she never reached out to anyone in the circus.
And for that matter, why the fuck didn't anyone check up with Ribbit? Kaufmo was close to her before Jax showed up, he noticed something was wrong and even asked Jax about it but it was never confirmed if he pressed Ribbit about it. Ragatha was close with her as well, and we all know Ragatha is the kind of person who would lend an ear in a heartbeat.
Let's just put it in perspective for a minute and place ourselves in someone like Ragatha's shoes. She has been in the circus since 2008 and has seen people abstract before. Anyone who's been in the circus long enough knows that isolation is a real and genuine threat. Then Ribbit shows up and she has been in the circus for FOUR YEARS and is as fine as anyone can be trapped in the circus before a new person shows up. They get close in a way that could easily be read as romantic, then there's a supposed falling out and the Ribbit starts pulling away from all her friend groups. Wouldn't that be a little alarming to watch?
Anyone who is a genuine friend to someone would know to reach out to Ribbit and hold her arms and tell her that throwing her life away for some guy who obviously treats her like dirt is fucking ridiculous and to get a grip. Where was the solidarity? Where was the fire to get up and do something about it? Why did she let herself wither away and more importantly why did her friends watch her do it and not intervene?
If your friend is showing clear signs of suicidal ideation and behaviors it's irrisponsible to just leave them be. Jax may have been the cause of her abstraction but coming from someone who's struggled with suicidal tendencies my whole life, when you have mental health problems you have a responsibility to yourself to reach out for help, and your loved ones have a responsibility to be there for you.
We were doing an activity where the kids got to make a playbill for a musical about themselves and all the other kids were like “character list: mommy, daddy, me, my brother, my best friend” “scenes: I get a puppy, first day of school, my baby sister is born”
But one little girl was like “oh, it’s a musical about ME you say” and the character list was all the other girls in the class cast as her body parts, and a story about how her body works.
“Kaylee is nice so she will be the heart. Lily is my kidneys. Sapphire is the lungs.”
She surreptitiously showed me that the girl who kept taking the crayons she was using was cast specifically as “left buttcheek” and I had to pretend like that wasn’t the funniest thing I’d ever seen.

"Breathless and Amazing"... I disagree. >:C (2010)
project hail mary is a touching and poignant film that leaves you asking questions about humanity like, "wow what if all mainstream media was genuinely good" and "what if book adaptions actually gave a shit about the book in question" and "what if studios hired actors that could actually act, and then let them get a lil wacky with it"

AITA for not telling my new party why I broke things off with my cursed greatsword?
I know how it sounds, but like, bear with me.
I (28/F/former paladin), had been travelling with a cursed greatsword (Immeasurable/F/Sword) and was really into her for a long time. When we first met she told me she was the disembodied spirit of an ancient warlord and beamed images of a beautiful raven haired warrior in gorgeous blackened Gothic armor into my mind, she told me it was her true form and I was super into it so I forsook my paladin oath and we started hooking up
Early on in our relationship she was really supportive when I started to transition, telling me she was "nearing her apotheosis" as well. I didn't think much of it at the time, and dutifully listened to her when she told me to travel the kingdom and assemble the ritual objects for her ascension. There was a team of adventurers that tried to stop us and she told me to kill them but one of them was my former best friend Sir Roderick The Bold (25/M/Paladin) so I refused and only incapacitated them. She didn't like that and we had a huge fight about it after we'd left
Long story short after I'd done the ritual and assembled the artifacts she revealed her true form was a ruse and she was actually just a mass of tentacles and eyes (which I don't mean to yuck anybody's yum mentioning, it's just that tentacles don't really appeal to me lol)
She said she was going to consume the world, "starting with you" and that I had "outlived my usefulness". I felt really shocked and betrayed and helped the adventuring party that was following us around to defeat her and seal her back in the sword (which I left there), but I feel really bad about it
I sorta got adopted by them since then and they keep telling me things like "Good job resisting the influence of the cursed sword!" And "How did you break free of her mind control?" Or "I am happy to see you've chosen the path of righteousness." And I haven't told them I wasn't ever under a spell or anything, I was just really mad at her at the time and lashed out. AITA?
humans should be able to do a special Ultra Sleep after major life accomplishments where you're just out for like 32 hours or something and then you wake up fully refreshed in every way
Idk what kind of sleep marathons you're all having in the notes but when I sleep for 12+ hours I feel like shit afterwards.
it's been months and I'm still baffled by how this one-sentence post keeps getting so many responses that go "this exists except without the last part of the sentence"
there should be a tumblr without piss poor reading comprehension
we already have that except with piss poor reading comprehension, which i assume is like an extraneous detail rather than a major part of the point you're making
I'm going to fix everything in the next three hours everyone wish me luck. if i dont then probably ill dig a hole and lie down in it for a bit in the rain/sun/whatever outside looks like these days
the hole isnt even that bad
With the whole "Markiplier making his own DVD copies of Iron Lung to sell" thing, it's been fascinating and slightly concerning how many people seem to genuinely believe that if a physical release isn't coming from a giant corporation, it must automatically be a bootleg.
Look at me.
Look me directly in the eyes while I say this.
You can just make things.
You can simply create something and put it into the world.
That's allowed.
People have been doing it for centuries.
They sell blank VHS tapes. They sell blank DVDs. Blank CDs. You can buy flash drives by the bucketful if you really want to. If you create a movie, an album, a game, a documentary, or a four-hour video essay about the mating habits of fictional space goblins, you are entirely permitted to put that thing on physical media and sell it.
That is not piracy.
Piracy is taking something that belongs to someone else and reproducing or distributing it without permission.
If I buy a DVD of a movie, I own that copy of the movie. I do not own the movie itself. I didn't acquire the rights to duplicate it, press a thousand copies, and start selling them out of my garage like I've become the regional distributor for Warner Bros.
The copyright, distribution rights, and intellectual property still belong to whoever created it or whoever legally acquired those rights.
If I start burning copies of Iron Lung and selling them myself without Markiplier's permission, that's piracy.
If Markiplier, who made and owns the rights to Iron Lung, burns copies and sells them himself, that's just distribution.
He's the rights holder.
He's distributing his own work.
If you made it, if it came from your own mind, your own work, your own time, your own resources, then congratulations. You own the thing. You don't need a corporation to bless it with legitimacy.
The corporation is not what makes it real.
The fact that it exists is what makes it real.
I think we've accidentally spent so many years living inside a world dominated by mass-produced media that some people have developed the strange assumption that all media emerges from a factory somewhere. As if films naturally occur in shrink-wrapped plastic cases and descend from the heavens aboard a pallet truck.
But independent artists have been burning discs, dubbing tapes, printing books, pressing records, and mailing things directly to people for longer than many of us have been alive.
That's not a bootleg.
That's just a product.
It's not "bootleg."
It's just... leg.
The normal kind.
The original, free-range, locally sourced leg.
I didn't realize that this was about Project Hail Mary at first I just accepted that this was Ryan Gosling's fault and we have to kill him
