And I think it's kind of broken that society says people who want to do stuff like that have "low" ambition (not you OP, I get you're using it illustratively because that's what society labels said jobs) and don't deserve to live at the same standard as people with "high" ambitions.

If we need someone to do a job, that job is a role in the community and deserves not just a salary but cultural respect for the role.

"high" ambition jobs are all jobs that involve domineering and controlling others. "low" ambition jobs are all jobs that involve service to others. Have you noticed? Because I have noticed.

But serving others is actually more needed than controlling them.

Was talking to a coworker today who explained that her grandfather was like Snow White “but Californian. And an old man.” in that the creatures of the forest would follow him around and presumably duet with him.

I have started recontextualizing many of the ways in which I am unusual into the framework of like. for instance. humans as a species have a very broad and diverse number of traits and then within those traits every individual exists on a spectrum. an example I think of a lot is my ARFID/"picky eating." all humans exist along a spectrum of people whose bodies and brains tell them that Literally Anything is safely edible (that French guy who ate metal? pica, etc) and people whose bodies and brains tell them that ALMOST NOTHING is safely edible. I am on one end of this spectrum. most people fall comfortably in between those poles in ways that are socially unremarkable. this is true of most traits!

those of us who are in the 99% percentile of some fucking thing or other are often made to feel like we are Wrong and should be More Normal but it's normal for human beings to have varying and diverse experiences of the world. as a very adaptive social species we rely heavily on individuals being different from one another, because our unit of survival is not the individual human, it's the community. for a successful community you do need people who fall all along those spectrums. you need people who are real suspicious of new foods or foods that are slightly and imperceptibly "off" flavor or texturewise.

I am not really trying to invoke any kind of evolutionary psychology or whatever, which I find to be ... not... great.... in general. but thinking of humans as a species of animal with specific traits that set us apart from other animals and examining what those traits are has really helped me come to terms with the ways in which I fall outside of currently socially accepted norms. diversity of human experience and perception and different ways of interacting with the world are and have been really crucial to our survival as a species. it's sort of our whole thing. and it's something that I think is really cool about us.

idk it's just a way of looking and thinking about this stuff that I find reality-affirming for myself. I feel so consistently alienated by most of the current cultural understandings of humans and human societies. I think they broadly speaking we very rarely understand ourselves on a large scale. we tell ourselves stories about ourselves and very often those stories are less based on reality and more based on what we (as a society) wish was true. often it's more based on what's convenient to believe about ourselves in order to allow for a continuance of the status quo. stepping outside of that helps me feel less insane. it helps me feel less like I live on Saturn.

oh i also wanted to mention that i've been volunteering with the prison library support network and really enjoying it! i thought i would post about it in case anyone else is interested bc i know there are a lot of library/library-adjacent people and abolitionists #onhere.

plsn is an abolitionist volunteer org whose primary service is reference, so answering questions and providing resource access to people inside, and you can volunteer to either be a part of processing their incoming/outgoing mail or otherwise to actually help answer the reference questions, which is what i've been doing. you don't have to be a librarian to volunteer; they will teach you how to do reference and there are templates and faqs to help you every step of the way. plsn is based in new york but they answer mail from facilities all over the country, and you can participate remotely + asynchronously even if you live elsewhere or outside the u.s. it's also a low time commitment - they ask you to answer at least 4 letters per year, though of course you can do as many as you want - the only time-sensitive part is that once you claim a letter, they ask you to answer it within 5 days.

it's an opt-in system where you to choose the letters you'd like to answer and you're never required to answer a letter that you don't want to; i would say based on my experience so far that there is a particular need for volunteers who are interested in helping letter writers access erotica; people frequently write in requesting written erotica, photos of celebrities, pornstars, and cartoon characters, etc. and volunteers' job is to provide that while keeping within whatever specific facility guidelines apply so that the resources can actually make it back into prison without being rejected by censors. there are also so many letters about different games and gaming systems, especially magic the gathering; i had no idea how many people inside are playing magic the gathering! plus tons of requests for different books and articles either in part or in whole, so it is also a lot of straight resource acquisition.
