Hello there! My name is Alicia, and I'm a comic fantasy author!

I love fairy tales and folklore, history, cooking, especially baking, and being silly. Still an anime fan but a bit out of the loop these days...

I have a webcomic called Vampires Don't Belong in Fairytales which you can find on my side blog @vampiresdontbelonginfairytales

There's also a book series of the same name! You don't need to read the books to read the webcomic and vice versa.

The books, in brief:

Miss Prince - A girl gets a job working as a fairytale prince. The real ones keep running off and getting married to the first princess they rescue and becoming kings. And kings don't rescue people.

The Map is the Treasure - Joshua doesn't want to be in a story, but it's tough. Pirates and mermaids and a treasure hunt for an ancient map that may or may not exist.

Fairy Roots - Will has been obsessed with Fairyland since he was a kid. His mother told him it was a scary place full of monsters that would eat him up. She is bad at psychology and she's going to be SO MAD when she finds out where he is.

Vampires Don't Belong in Fairyland - The Fairyland royalty has been disappearing for years and Tyrian is about to disappear too. He's got a magical artefact to hide and preferably he needs to find a foreign prince to help, because he's a king and kings tend to die if they try any heroics.

Magic and Other Things in Bottles - Victor is the shyest vampire that ever was, and he's afraid of humans specifically. This is a terrible flaw in a vampire. He moves in with his uncle to try and remedy this.

I know most of those following me know this, but just to make it super clear. An Gorta Mór (The Great Hunger/the Great Famine) was a deliberate genocide of the Irish people. There was enough food grown in Ireland to make sure everyone was alive and healthy and survived. Instead it was exported, sent to England and elsewhere for profit while men, women, and children starved in the streets. While the English landlords fucked off and evicted starving families who couldn’t afford rent. While babies were too weak to cry and died at the side of the road.

They tried to kill us, but they did not succeed. And we owe so much thanks to the other oppressed peoples, in particular the Choctaw Nation and the Masai, who sent money and grain to us.

Let me repeat that. The Choctaw Nation who had just gone through the Trail of Tears sent us money to try save Irish lives. It’s led to an understanding between Irish people and Native American tribes, most recently when we donated to the Navajo and Hopi fundraisers for COVID-19 relief, because while it may be a different tribe, Irish people will never forget those who helped us and we’ll help back.

The entire population of the island is less than seven million people. We’re still a million less on this island than pre famine. And it’s not that long ago. My grandmother’s grandparents lived through it. We’ve told the stories, it literally changed the DNA of the country. We have a national fear of renting, because so many people were evicted. People joke about Irish people always offering loads of food, but it’s because there’s that cultural memory of not being able to.

They tried to kill us, but they did not succeed. We will not let them take our lives, we will not let them take our language. We lost so much, but we will not lose it all.

This is why I get so angry when people say “it was the potato famine, it was because of monoculture/microbes.”

Nope. The potatoes were the only thing Irish people were allowed to fucking eat, because as pointed out, the rest of the crops they were growing were for their landlords to ship to England. So when the one “worthless” crop they were allowed to eat rotted in the field, the English crown, empire, landlords, all shrugged and carried on. People starved to death lying next to productive fields.

Yes because an army of software engineers working around the clock, losing sleep, and busting ass till the last minute prevented it from happening.

You mean the one that was fixed through rigorous world wide government action?

One of the root problems of our society is a refusal or inability by media to articulate that all those “it’s gonna be an apocalypse” disasters were not disasters because we collectively did something about them.

The good news is this is actually quite correctable. I maintain my firm belief that we as humans are capable of solving almost all of our problems, when we decide to do so.

And I still think that’s going to happen. I don’t know when or how, but I do know that abandoning hope won’t help bring it about.

And I refuse to let the cynics own a chunk of my heart.

Something to take a moment today and remember: As a collective, imperfect, often-divided human species, there is one disease--one--that we have ever managed to hunt to extinction. Because after thousands of years of watching it torture our children to death? Saving SOME people, saving MOST people, wasn't fucking good enough.

We have never hated anything more than we hated smallpox.

We have never loved anything as much as we love each other.

To be clear, this isn't a bit. This is what they actually did. "Its too late" is the new "Climate change isn't real"... And its still a lie!

Every serious climate scientist agrees that there is no such as thing as too late, just as there is no such thing as too early. We should have done a lot more than we have to fight climate change, and the world will suffer for our inaction, but there is no point of no return. We can always work to reduce the amount of suffering that occurs, and eventually turn things around to the point where our planet is healing once again. Do not believe anyone who says it's "too late".

HTML isn't only for people working in the tech field. It's for everyone. Learn how to make a website from scratch in this beginner friendly

if you're learning HTML for any reason, i can't recommend HTML for people highly enough. it's a fantastic introduction to HTML and CSS targeted towards beginners who aren't technically inclined, and it isn't patronizing towards the reader for that. it's a very relaxed and kind (but informative) resource that even i reference from time to time (and i consider myself pretty good with semantic HTML).

definitely check it out if you're interested in making a personal site, or working with HTML at all.
