Scientists at UC Riverside have demonstrated a new, RNA-based vaccine strategy that is effective against any strain of a virus and can be used safely even by babies or the immunocompromised. Every year, researchers try to predict the four influenza strains that are most likely to be prevalent during the upcoming flu season. And every year, people line up to get their updated vaccine, hoping the researchers formulated the shot correctly. The same is true of COVID vaccines, which have been reformulated to target sub-variants of the most prevalent strains circulating in the U.S. This new strategy would eliminate the need to create all these different shots, because it targets a part of the viral genome that is common to all strains of a virus. The vaccine, how it works, and a demonstration of its efficacy in mice is described in a paper published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. “What I want to emphasize about this vaccine strategy is that it is broad,” said UCR virologist and paper author Rong Hai. “It is broadly applicable to any number of viruses, broadly effective against any variant of a virus, and safe for a broad spectrum of people. This could be the universal vaccine that we have been looking for.”

just saw a cybertruck with one of those “I BOUGHT THIS BEFORE ELON WENT CRAZY” stickers… girl no the hell you did not lol
it’s fucking wild because one day you’re like i guess i’m not dying tragically young and you go to the store and you buy dental floss, ingredients for soup, and a bath mat
it’s this sentiment in practice, in day to day.

🕊️Keep Hope Alive: a Gaza Giving Circle🕊️
Keep Hope Alive is a project that connects multiple families in need in Gaza with a pool of donated funds. Anybody can donate through their Chuffed fundraiser. Funds are then evenly divided on a weekly basis between all 7 of the families that the project works to sustain.
The project was born from the observation that Palestinians are made to share intimate details of suffering in order to be afforded help. Its operations are designed around the following principles:
Support Palestinian autonomy by letting them choose what to share.
Prioritize Palestinians' privacy and dignity.
Alleviate the burden of asking for help. Forced displacement & internet blackouts mean that most of the families can’t log into their social media.
Create reliable, sustained help through regular giving, rather than chasing one-off donations.
The organizer of this project is my best friend in the world and I trust her implicitly. I am also managing bank transfers for one of the individual families connected to the project and can personally attest to their veracity. The specifics of every single ingoing and outgoing transaction are recorded here.

Hey y'all -- I'm making this post on behalf of Sami and his family, who are currently suffering from hunger in Gaza. Their fundraiser is currently at 87%. In a world where food is so abundant it's truly terrible for some people to go without. Even by donating something small, you can help someone in buying a bag of flour to make bread for their children.
If you can't donate please circulate Sami's fundraiser -- anything helps! Thank you so, so much for even reading. FUNDRAISER.
Please, friends, help us with anything. We are being killed and exterminated in Gaza, and no one is helping us except you.

When our English teacher gave our first writing invitation of the year, Become a kitchen implement in 2 descriptive paragraphs, I did not think butcher knife or frying pan, I thought immediately of soft flour showering through the little holes of the sifter and the sifter's pleasing circular swishing sound, and wrote it down. Rhoda became a teaspoon, Roberto a funnel, Jim a muffin tin and Forrest a soup pot. We read our paragraphs out loud. Abby was a blender. Everyone laughed and acted giddy but the more we thought about it, we were all everything in the whole kitchen, drawers and drainers, singing teapot and grapefruit spoon with serrated edges, we were all the empty cup, the tray. This, said our teacher, is the beauty of metaphor. It opens doors. What I could not know then was how being a sifter would help me all year long. When bad days came I would close my eyes and feel them passing through the tiny holes. When good days came I would try to contain them gently the way flour remains in the sifter until you turn the handle. Time, time. I was a sweet sifter in time and no one ever knew.
