A few weeks ago I tried explaining to my non tumblr friends what blorbo/eeby deeby/glup shitto/scrunglo/plinko was and it almost gave all of us an aneurysm
This was the post I was trying to explain. This was how I looked
Yeah I can see how this would feel like having a stroke to an outsider
apparently europeans have the impression that US Americans never learn the metric system.
like our science curriculum from day one is entirely done in the metric system. we just don't use metric in our day to day lives.
yeah actually we kinda just do it for the bit :)
I have had people try to gently and kindly explain to me the workings of the metric system, as if Americans are having trouble with the concept of a base ten system. like no. we get it. we were taught this when we were like eight. it's just that like. we don't really wanna do it that way. for the bit.
To take this seriously for a moment, your brain stores this information in different places. I know this because I grew up in the US, am a professional scientist, and now live in Europe. I have used imperial for daily use, metric for scientific use, and metric for daily use. None of these uses talk to each other in my head.
Here's what I mean. I know that 25C is standard temperature, or, the temperature at which you can assume gases will behave according to the ideal gas law.
I also know it's slightly warmer than pleasant, for me. However, this has nothing to do with the ideal gas law. I had to learn it separately, by walking around one afternoon and thinking "it's warm" and pulling out my phone to read "25 C" on my weather app.
I also know that 77F is slightly warmer than pleasant. I know this because I have experienced many days that are 77F. However, I have to manually look up the information that 25C = 77F because my brain is not a Fahrenheit to Celsius conversion machine, it is a machine that stores memories and experiences and some of those memories are related to Celsius and some are related to Fahrenheit and very rarely would I be looking at both simultaneously.
The same is true of lengths and weights and anything else. Learning something in a book doesn't replace the mental rolodex of real-life references in your head. If it did, we'd all be better scientists.
As to why imperial has been so sticky in the US, I can't tell you. It is hard to change---I still struggle with Celsius and prefer Fahrenheit for daily use---and Europeans tend to be a bit condescending about it (see the notes of this very post, where Europeans are snottily calling Americans stupid despite the fact that most Americans can actually use both systems perfectly well), which makes people dig in their heels.
I would honestly suggest we have something called “American measurement,” which is similar to English measurement.
To wit: we just mix them.
Soda pop is sold by the ounce but also by the liter. Yarn is measured in both ounces and grams. We run 5k races but drive in miles. Liquor is sold in milliliter measurements if you’re getting a bottle but ounces if you’re at a bar (“one shot” = one ounce). I’ve made recipes that use cups, ounces, and grams all in the same recipe and the only trouble it’s given me was “why, oh why, will the scale not fucking tare?” Our vaccinations are measured in CCs and we have plenty of mechanics capable of working on foreign metric-style cars. I’m looking at my bathroom cleaner right now and it’s labeled in fluid ounces, as a quart, and also in mL.
We can and do use metric. We just also use more.
No. NTA
#you're allowed to make it known they showed their ass#NTA#like fuck#what terrible parents#i would do that to especially when it was their friend who was mad on their behalf#like it's not like he can take it down his friend posted it out of emotional solidarity and support
How do BOTH parents keep missing things? No, that’s entirely deliberate. The sister doesn’t ask for just the one parent and the parents don’t decide who will show up for each kid who needs their presence. The best man must’ve been tired of their bullshit. If they were friends since their schooldays, he would’ve seen Y E A R S of it.
A Petty KING! I wouldn't take shit down lmao you thought your reasoning was kosher when you didn't show up and broke my heart, why are you embarrassed that people heard what it was? Nah.
Yeah see if the parents thought that missing the wedding because the sister needed them was a reasonable thing to do they wouldn't be upset about having the world hear the voicemail.
They're pissed because now everyone knows they're shitty people.
i see a convo w a character ai and i keep scrolling
listen im seeing tags about people agreeing that ai bots can be really inaccurate and i want to point out that this is NOT about that. the ai bot can be as accurate as you want it to be i still get mad at em.
its not about how good they do at emulating a character, its about that they aren’t a person making creative choices and i hate that. i want to enjoy my characters with other people. hold my hand and tell me all about why you think your blorbo is autistic or likes your favourite shitty band. i love you. if a bot randomly shuffles those opinions out idc if theyre even the same ones im exploding it with my mind.
What’s the point of loving content if I know there isn’t someone as obsessively fucked up as me sitting on the other side of the internet
One thing I can tell you as someone so zoology obsessed is that books, articles, blog posts, any literature at all is highly likely to let you know if an invertebrate or reptile has ever been known to eat its own young but not nearly as likely to admit how many widely beloved mammals will do the same (most of them) or how often (way way more often than the scorpions or snakes)
Something something researchers found out hamsters had a specific number of babies and would eat babies to achieve the optimal number of baby. They figured it out by removing excess baby and no eating. Then reintroducing excess baby and then some babys got eated.
One of the funniest darkest things I ever saw an animal do was a hamster not just designate a baby as food but designate it as food for later by putting it in its cheek pouches with the normal food

in this terrifying world you continuously have the power to offer someone else a little relief . why would you withhold that. do you remember what a little relief feels like? it feels like a lot
excuse me? are you suggesting i frolic directly into someone's emotional space and assume what brings them relief, potentially causing more stress? are you encouraging people to reach past their own boundaries to help, increasing net suffering if it costs more than the other gains? surely not; that would be advocating for emotional self-harm.
this is a post about the woman who waived my late fee at the bank .
good for you, good for her, the wording on the initial post feels closer to blaming people who don't reach out than celebrating those who do by a large enough margin that i feel the need to hit back
you are a tar pit
I know I’ve reblogged this already today but I like. this point
people really do show their true colors regarding feminism, trans rights, and queer liberation anytime men are brought up. like it is an almost daily occurrence at this point that i’ll scroll through someone’s blog and there will be dozens of posts about wanting to smash the patriarchy and the gender binary, then they’ll call a trans man an mra for being like “hi can i please be treated with basic human decency please that would be great.”
I have a extremely important news about kestrels
MORE!
It's not "everyone" acting like it's normal. The majority of people know something's wrong they just don't have the tools to fix it. Maybe a plurality don't know that the problem is capitalism, they blame it on something else, but they're still aware there's a problem. "Everyone" is just too exhausted from working 4 jobs, 50 hours a week to scream into the void in their spare time.
guess I gotta pull out this bad boy again huh
I need people to realize "gay men who barely consider themselves men except as a matter of convenience and sexual compatibility logistics" are not some niche esoteric Tumblr thing but a condition an unquantifiably vast portion of us share. Privilege discourse is good when you know what you're talking about, but many are so dogmatic about it they end up viewing men and women as different species and nonbinary people as a neatly delineated third species.
