As a fantasy writer and madder with a main paracosm in a fantasy setting, I read a lot of “how to do worldbuilding” articles, and a surprising amount of them is just “well take how we as humans exist but change it up a little”. And man, it’s so disappointing. Like, this is a fantasy setting. You can do LITERALLY whatever the fuck you want, and it’ll be realistic. “All societies have religions!” not if the people are overly obsessed with directly provable scientific facts. “Every species does art and music!” not if creativity is inherently a rare, one-in-a-billion trait. “All societies have some kind of currency!” not if it’s an anarchist society where people do shit for others just because helping others is the right thing to do. (The examples taken from something I read a few days ago.)

Like seriously. We live in a world where so many things are considered trivial, but when you take a few steps back you realize that a lot of things are common HUMAN experiences. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, depending on what you’re aiming for - but if you’re like me and want to go wild, you’re gonna need more than that.

So why stop at creating worlds based on predefined concepts? Why not redefine the concepts themselves? What would a species with less socialization look like? How about a species that don’t breed but rather just spawn into existence? Hell why not redefine life itself? What does it even mean to be alive? Could the events of nature be considered life in the correct setting? What is even nature anyway? What natural phenomena can occur? On a small scale, or even on a cosmic scale? What if, instead of planets and space, you just had an infinitely large flat surface with a layer of air on one side of it? Fuck it, why not redefine the very laws of physics itself? Why not go all the way and create a reality so incomprehensible that no one, not even you can understand what’s going on anymore?

C’mon, guys, I want to see the true extent of our imagination. Show me a world that’s truly, completely different from ours. Take the universe apart.

the main problem with my paracosm is that there's thousands of years of detailed history (the top shelf in my closet it absolutely shoved full of notebooks detailing this) but then there's absolutely NO PLOT in the present day so my paras are all just sort of dithering around eating Taco Bell and lighting stuff on fire
