🏳️‍🌈 Before 1973, the American Psychiatric Association listed homosmexuality as a ‘mental illness.’ In December 1973, a vote was successfully held to remove it.

🗳️ Before 1974, there were no openly gay elected officials. That changed with Kathy Kozachenko, who became the first openly gay American elected to public office in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

🎖️ Before 2011, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” banned LGBTQ+ people from serving openly in the military.

💍 Before 2015, LGBTQ+ couples couldn’t get married in all 50 states. At the time, laws varied by state, and while many states allowed for civil unions for same-sex couples, it created a separate but equal standard.

💼 Before 2020, employers could legally discriminate against queer and trans employees. like as a writer, i always want to apologize for not being in the mood to write whatsoever and hope no one hates me or is mad at me for not being a well-oiled story machine.

People seem to not know how old writers are when they make their stories.

Stephanie Meyer wrote Twilight in 2003, at age 29

Cassandra Clare started writing Mortal Instruments in 2004, at age 31

Rick Riordan published Percy Jackson & the Olympians, the book about 12yrolds, at age 41

George R. R. Martin published A Game of Thrones, at age 48

You can’t even use the “but fanfiction isn’t real writing” argument because of how many fanfiction turn movies there is. They are clearly enough of a story to be made into published books.

Anna Renee Todd’s After series was a Harry Styles fanfiction, which was published in 2014, when she was 25

E.L. James Fifty Shades of Grey series was a Twilight fanfiction, which was published in 2011, when she was 48

Mortal Instruments was a Harry Potter fanfiction.

I have read so many fics about middle-aged people that were clearly written by fucking high schoolers in their AP Bio class that I can backbutton out after about four paragraphs. Because it’s painfully obvious.

If kids want all fanfic and published novels written about/for them to be only written by them, I’m gonna have to insist on the reverse being enforced as well.
