has enough time passed for us to admit that the chuck mcgill hate was corny and overblown and extremely reductive of his immensely well written character and that if he was played by an actor who was like 12% more conventionally attractive a lot of ppl who viciously hated him for (checks notes) being a shitty person on the shitty people show would have adored him and toxic incest yaoi shipped him with jimmy
It makes me very sad because his actor, Michael McKean is one of my favourite actors... Here's a picture of him when he was younger (I think he's rather pretty <3)
Besides that, looks aren't everything. It's sad that people judge just because he's old and a bit unattractive. He is my favourite character of bcs and perhaps in my top3 favourite characters.
Of course I do think every single trait of him doesn't only make him shitty, but immensely unlikable. But him being shitty doesn't warrant the hate he gets. People should be upfront about disliking him for other reasons rather than always blaming it on 'Chuck was shitty!!!' because everyone is shitty... it's bcs... yet everyone still likes Jimmy!
Now, a warning for those who need it because there's talk of Chuck's method of death and mental illness ahead
Also, what's the deal of everyone mocking his suicide, mental illness and delusions? Even if a character is shitty. Imagine being a survivor of those very real, traumatizing (life threatening) events and people are making it a laughing stock because they happen to dislike a character it happened to.
And in my humble opinion, Chuck is painfully great representation of unconventional mental illness. Not just angsty feels, not even the stuff like bedrotting and having no hygiene... even more unlikable because he seems to have everything together when he has not. And the fact that he is still ill, even when it's not visible, makes him do things that aren't good. But it's excused for everyone except for Chuck because Chuck doesn't seem ill enough. And isn't that even a thing in the show itself? Chuck isn't ill enough, but at the same time TOO ill in a way. It ultimately ruins his life by not ruining his life.
'I laughed during his death scene' I find it hard to think about that people laugh during a scene of a mentally ill man taking his own life. In the original airing of that episode, there was a suicide hotline at the end displayed. And because it's not something common, there are people who don't even realize what he's doing. They see a man take his own life and assume it's not suicide, somehow, and go on to celebrate it. Or they do realize it, yet they still celebrate.
Of course, this is only a fictional character. But it's one that comes really close to reality, personality wise, because this happens and more people SHOULD be aware that old, ugly, repressed businessmen can have childhood trauma and mental health problems too. And they shouldn't be executed for that.
me watching bcs the first time: chuck’s story makes me depressed and idk why. love him though
me rewatching bcs a few years later: wow chuck’s situation is actually a horror movie for housebound disabled people. other people constantly trying to make decisions for you without even talking to you about it, making assumptions about you, thinking that your symptoms are a personal slight against them. and later on using your mental illness to ruin your reputation. he had no control over his life in many aspects which is so scary to me since im in a similar situation though honestly a worse one. he deserved way better and should’ve gotten help way earlier.
