I'm both somehow 🙃
I remember watching "The Last Jedi" in the cinema, and in the Ukrainian dub, this moment was translated as: "Join me. I'm begging you". I wanted to scream, haha.
Yeah…I really don’t see how the plan for Ben Solo to go down a path that ends in darkness and villainy is a preferable outcome for his arc. Also, I think that not enough people consider how that outcome would reflect on Han, Leia, and Luke as the individuals who raised him. Because if the child of two of the legendary heroes of the Galaxy suddenly turned to the dark side without warning, I feel like that would signify that something went wrong with the way they raised him.
And if that were the case, that means that those problems must be addressed meaningfully in order for the story to come to a satisfying conclusion. Delving into why he did what he did necessitates an interrogation of his family and raises suspicion on the quality of their care and family dynamic. This is why so many commentators on the state of the sequels argue that Ben was just inherently inclined towards the dark side, that he was evil from birth and there was nothing his poor parents could do to stop it. Because the notion that Ben was inherently evil absolves the trio (and the viewers by extension) from reflecting upon the mistakes or flaws that might’ve led to his fall to the dark side.
This is not me claiming that Ben had no agency in his decision to go dark, but I do think that my points are relevant in discussions about his arc in the sequel trilogy. It doesn’t make sense to me. It doesn’t make sense to have the child of the heroes be the character to reject redemption and lean into the inevitability of his supposed evil and the impossibility of any other alternative. Having him be irreparably evil undercuts the overarching themes of not just the sequel trilogy, but of Star Wars as a whole.
Yes, absolutely!
When Brendol Hux appeared on The Mandalorian, you could see even in that short scene how his son turned out to be such an a-hole.
But it's a much, much larger stretch to buy that the son raised by the heroes of the OT somehow ends up worse than even Darth Vader and it wouldn't reflect well on Han, Leia, or Luke. Fans had a hard enough time with what we got, such as Luke attempting to whack Ben in his sleep or Han shrugging off Ben as having "too much Vader in him." As it is it makes little sense that everybody was so fearful of Ben and yet they were really confident that the granddaughter of Palpatine had a good heart.
Never mind that ending Kylo's arc with him unredeemed wouldn't make sense with the saga's themes.
Thank you for mentioning the “too much Vader in him” line because that one REALLY gets to me. Attributing his turn to the dark side to something he can’t control like his lineage and insinuating that evil was inevitable for his son. It’s a huge stretch to think that the child of the heroes would just spontaneously go to the dark side without a good reason.
TLJ expands upon his reasoning in the rashomon-like storytelling where each perspective of the characters involved get to share their interpretation of the night he left Luke’s school. We get to see that the true story was actually more complex than we thought and that Han’s initial retelling of what happened wasn’t necessarily accurate. But even with Han’s inaccuracy, he STILL believed that his son could be saved and still reached out to him. If the story after TFA ran with Kylo going fully to the dark side, Han’s sacrifice would be one made in vain, it would be incredibly cynical.
On the Palpatine bit, TROS really made Rey into a cuckoo bird who gets to have all the recognition and trust that Ben never had. Her being the “good replacement child” never sat right with me and it’s crazy that the audience is supposed to just believe that Luke and Leia knew of her lineage the entire time.
Another thing to consider is that Kylo's storyline has strong hints of child of gr*oming/ab*se. To say that Kylo was to go unredeemed would be absolutely devastating to anyone who was a victim of said abuse. That's why the line of "too much Vader" seemed like such a slap in the face. To say that is like saying the victims of those who were neglected by their family and then ab*sed in some way are "asking for it" a bit y'know?
Also: if Kylo is supposed to be Vader 2.0 then he NEEDED to be redeemed. Vader was redeemed at the end. Kylo needed to be redeemed to fulfill the Vader story-arc (cause let's be honest they didn't have a single original plan besides make the Luke character a female).

Resources For Writing Deaf, Mute, or Blind Characters
Despite the fact that I am not deaf, mute, or blind myself, one of the most common questions I receive is how to portray characters with these disabilities in fiction.
As such, I’ve compiled the resources I’ve accumulated (from real life deaf, mute, or blind people) into a handy masterlist.
Deaf Characters:

Making long-form webcomics is like
i know hearing people on this website love to pass around those posts with links to free sign language lessons but you know you need to actually put effort into learning about Deaf culture, too, right?
if you are currently learning ASL, you need to read Introduction to American Deaf Culture by Thomas K. Holcomb
resources for other Deaf cultures include, but are not limited to:

Star Wars and Enneagram Types
Am I fundamentally misunderstanding these characters? According to this Screen Rant article, Anakin and Kylo are 4′s. And Rey is an 8. I believe Anakin to be an 8, Kylo to be a 2, and Rey, probably a 3.
Listen: Anakin and Kylo are unhealthy in their numbers. And 8′s can devolve into violence and megalomania. Kylo literally tries to guilt trip Rey into staying and is the king of “I will do whatever it takes to feel like I belong.”
Am I crazy? Yes. Did too much fanfiction mess with my head? Does anyone else see what I see? Does anyone else see things wrong? Am I wrong? I know this is weird to nitpick but I’m doing research for my writing okay.
HOLY MOLY I DID NOT NOTICE THAT!!!

“On this rainy night, what is your umbrella? The voice that responds when you call. Memories of seeing the same thing at the same time. The first time you matched each other’s pace. Did someone come to mind? Yes, that’s the person.” — Goblin (2016)
When @avenuecab showed me the sketches and final versions of this commission, all I could hear were Crush’s Beautiful and Chanyeol & Punch’s Stay With Me. Thank you so much for the wonderful work on this iconic first meeting scene. It took me back to college days spent binge-watching Goblin on my bed and crying for a week because of Episode 13 ☔︎⚘
