my main advice for writing an enemies to lovers relationship is to resist the urge to make the characters' loathing and attraction mutually exclusive opposing forces. it's okay if they're getting weirdly into it and having Thoughts whilst also sincerely wanting to kill each other with hammers.

I have also learned this is great for [PICK A COOL NAME FOR A SHIP] and [LOOK UP THE FACTS ABOUT OXYGEN LEVELS] and [WHAT’S THE WORD] and [DOUBLECHECK CHARACTER’S EYE COLOR] and ALL KINDS OF THINGS.

Anything that isn’t critical in the moment, and could be filled in later while I’m currently trying to burn through writing pages that will be lost if I don’t get them out right now? Brackets.

This is seriously the best advice, and it really helps put it into perspective that the first draft is just that- a draft. There’s no reason to agonize over a particularly tricky bit of writing when you could just leave it in brackets and skip to the good parts, the parts you’ve visualized. I also use brackets for [fact-check this], [use a stronger verb], [is this in character?] and other notes as I write, just so I don’t forget what I want to work on when I go back and edit.

Note the good sense of [brackets] not (parentheses).

Parentheses AKA round brackets can appear in fiction, usually as an afterthought in a character's thoughts or narration (as I saw them used just recently), but square brackets hardly ever do.

“Davey?” Angel mumbled, feeling him move out from underneath them. As usual, they were draped over him like a sloth.

“Go to sleep, Angel,” he whispered, kissing their forehead.

“Mm, no,” they yawned, stretching to look up at him as he started to get dressed. “Is this that meeting thingy you have to do?”

“Yeah,” he said, buttoning up his shirt. “I asked Ash to go, but he might be late, so - well, no, I mean, he’ll probably be on time, he’s pretty good with time when I really need him to be, but-“ He sighed and stopped midway through tying his tie. “This just needs to go well, Angel.”

They tilted their head and sat up. “Come over here. Let me tie your tie.”

“No, it’s fine,” he sighed. “Go back to sleep.”

“Wow, so I can’t tie my own fiancé’s damn tie?” they sniffed, then clapped their hands. “Over here. Come on.”

“Bossy,” he grumbled, nevertheless subjecting himself to their whims. They reached up and pulled his face to theirs, pressing a kiss to his lips before busying themselves with his tie.

“You have morning breath,” he informed them.

“So do you.”

“Well, I’m planning on brushing my teeth.”

“And you got dressed first, because you’re a total weirdo. There you go.” They kissed him again before letting him free. “Fly, little business man, fly.”

He stared down at them and they beamed up at him, eyelids already getting heavier.

“Go to sleep, Angel,” he said again, shaking his head fondly.

“Yep, on it,” they yawned, collapsing against the pillows. “Good luck with your meeting!”
