Literally this! It’s why I love this show so much. And smth my castmates discussed extensively when we put it on is the fact that it’s such a deep exploration of love and what it means to be loved and what it means to be human and to love in the most fucked up way possible (and the opening number even says that: “we swear we will teach you / what it means to love”)

We’ve got:

1. Rapidly becoming romantically attached under the pressure of trauma

2. Cold marriage where feelings exist in a state of cryogenics rather than dying out naturally

3. Estranged father and daughter where basically nothing is going to fix that dynamic because they’re both unwilling to hear each other despite constantly shouting so loud about their yearning for connection

4. An affair based out of a desperate attempt for human connection that becomes as real as it is toxic

5. Friendships that are at once based on deep feelings, but also those deep feelings come from hating each other the least out of those you’re in the proximity of

6. Yearning for what was lost and clinging to it so tightly that your very perception of love is skewed and you fall in love with an AI—and when you see a married couple with the wife’s guts ripped out you think “that must be what love is” and ask your dead boyfriends to do the same to you

Idk. I think it’s beautiful because it all sucks SO bad… because what follows that lyric is “what it means to obey, Paul!” Love is a real thing, but also extremely fickle in this show, and in life. Everyone is so dysfunctional always because people are messy and so is love
