caveating this by saying I may be talking out my ass, but I do think there was this kinda sweet spot in the late 2010s through to maybe early 2020s in television where #diversity did give way to shows that weren't just #diverse but streamers and networks weren't as risk averse and were green lighting stories by smaller, newer and marginalised writers, and those stories were also more inclusive and less normative. outta that era we got shows like pose, the bisexual, atlanta, I may destroy you, Rutherford Falls, reservation dogs, feel good, the oa, we are lady parts, sort of, Russian Doll, and even baby reindeer (which sort of came at the end of this era). all these shows made under these specific conditions of this era where studios and streamers had good money they were willing to spend, diversity and inclusion hadn't become demonized yet, and the political/social/economic ramifications of the COVID 19 pandemic either hadn't happened yet or weren't fully known. That's not me saying these shows had an easy time of it being made/experienced no unfair backlash on release, but I feel like now with entertainment industries (as well as many others) everywhere backtracking on DEI in front of and behind the camera due to resurgence in global fascism, with the world economy being shit, bigoted social media commentary influencing market decisions, erosion of labour rights, and the general nostalgia driven cannibalisation of popular culture meaning everything has to be connected to existing IP or the past...... we're probably never gonna have an era defined by studios taking chances on those kind of stories at that rate ever again. At least not for a long while. And again I'm not saying there are no shows like this currently, there are. But I feel like the mid-late 2010s-early 2020s we had really cool niche inclusive storytelling in much higher volume and all this is to say...I miss it :(
