xNFPs are some of the most popular types of people within this community, but the two types are often misunderstood. Primarily, INFPs are seen as “emotional crybabies” and ENFPs are seen as “overly-excited manic pixie girls”. In this post, I will mainly summarise the primary functions of both mbti types and also debunk misconceptions and stereotypes. Since my previous post became quite popular, I will debunk <all> function combinations in MBTI, and if I have time I will also go over the jungian combinations like IN(IF) (Ni-Fi, aka ISFP in loop), ET(EN) (Te-Ne), etc.
I am not sticking 100% to Jung’s own interpretations and I included some modern MBTI interpretations. I have not fully read Jung’s works and when I have, I will make posts talking about the types in detail (the book is like 988 pages, I ain’t reading all of that).
*ೃ༄Introverted Feeling*ೃ༄
Fi: Introverted feeling is a function focused primarily on subjective viewpoints in terms of emotions. Opposite to Te, which focuses on objectivity and the truth outside of their own viewpoints, Fi is determined to understand their personal perception of everything. Fi builds a personal, internal moral compass, one that does not necessarily align with external social values or group harmony. Fi is a judging function (in jungian), meaning it filters experiences through a personal lens of what feels right or wrong, good or bad, beautiful or ugly. Like Ti, which values internal logical consistency, Fi values internal moral consistency and makes decisions based on if the action aligns with their values and beliefs.
How it manifests: It is still a cognitive function related to thinking. Contrary to misconceptions, Fi is often not the “whiny emotionally expressive crybaby”. Fi, as described by Jung, is oftentimes very emotionally distant and has a hard time expressing their feelings. Fi is a rational type in jungian, meaning that the focus is on analyzing subjective values rather than <experiencing> said feelings. Generally, Fi users excel at empathizing on an individual and deep level, rather than a broad social one. Fi prioritizes individuality more than collectivism, making them rebels when their integrity is questioned. Fi usually makes a person who is oftentimes very sensitive to being misunderstood or being hurt. Introspective, deep, and philosophical, high Fi users are often very good at understanding who they are outside of societal expectations and norms.
Behaviors that can exist due to dominant Fi:
Reclusiveness, quietness, refusal to express and explain their feelings. Finds it hard to open up
Fells things deeply. Sentimental, poetic, and introspective. As a great understanding of why they feel a certain way
May appear stoic and unassuming on the outside. However, they have an intense inner emotional life
Can be self-oriented and biased when making decisions, can be stubborn at times and dogmatic with their viewpoints
Has a love for abstraction of emotions: ideas such as love, patronism, passion, loyalty, and pain are appealing
Attached to internal moral code. Indifference to socially accepted morals / ethics
Dedicated to finding their true self and personal identity. Trusts their own intuition and conscience
*ೃ༄Extroverted Intuition*ೃ༄
Ne: Extroverted feeling is a function that values possibilities, abstract patterns, and exploration. Ne craves novelty and open-endness, neglecting the focus on reality or the current state of the world. Ne is a very scatterbrained function: it jumps from idea to idea, lacking focus on any particular idea. Ne is good at spotting hidden connections and spotting trends between abstract ideas. Overall, Ne is the function that generates “what ifs” by connecting dots. It takes one idea/information and generates dozens of ideas/concepts, like a funnel. Ne has a frustration against reality, wanting to break boundaries and seek things that are outside of their current capacities and circumstances. Hating the past and the present, Ne constantly dreams of a future that is not grounded. Ne is very opportunistic: it is a type that has an eye on potential ways the future can enroll.
How it manifests: Ne’s manifestation in behavior can be erratic. Oftentimes, people associate Ne dominants to be sporadic, scatter-brained, and talkative. This is not always true. But what is true is that this is not a very practical type. Ne users are not focused on “seeing the existing stable situation”, as Jung has said, but rather focused on the future, possibilities, and what could happen. Because Ne users are not rational types (leading with F or T), they are highly impractical, oftentimes excited for the future. The most visible manifestation of Ne is the habit of escapism aka. consistently making plans to escape reality. The other is having a dislike towards routines. What I mean is that Ne goes against Si, which tends to favor routines, predictability, and nostalgia. Ne constantly seeks for the new and novel. Adding onto the hatred for routines, Ne also hates restriction. Ne oftentimes makes a very adventurous person, interested in exploration and disliking those who are not open to such ideas.
Behaviors that can exist due to dominant Ne:
Oftentimes has a sanguine attitude towards life. Easily excited for the future, but oftentimes drops ideas coldly after feeling a burning passion towards it. Lacks the ability to commit to any particular idea or goal
Has issues with being concise or explaining their ideas in a concise way. Scatterbrained and random, that is their thinking style. A trivial habit is the tendency to write walls of text without breaking them into concise paragraphs that sort based on main ideas.
Similar to above, Ne users do not know the difference between important and unimportant ideas. Likes the idea of all possibilities being open
Hates rules, regulation, and restriction
Has a liberal look towards life (not always political). Likes change and dislikes people who are attached to traditions and practicality
Curious, adventurous, and excited for what life can be like. Dreamy, out of touch, and dislikes the current reality
Most common ENFP enneagram = Sexual 7 , self preservation 2. Wings include 2w3, 2w1, 7w6, 7w8
Most common INFP enneagram = all e4s, mainly social 4, self preservation six. Wings include 4w5, 6w5, 4w3
Most common INFP trifixes = 469, 459, 461, 451, 269
Similar to SO6 the SO7 craves happiness through the formation and progression of social circles. The social 7 finds true enjoyment in life through the understanding of community and friendships. Social 7s can have a wide or a small desire for this type of enjoyment. Some so7 will have small circles who they keep close in order to find enjoyment. While some others will have a general overview of people and the need to share their enjoyment of life with them. Whether it is by improving their social and emotional well being or just being a good friend to others. And IMO they are the most extroverted of the types in the enneagram. This subtype can look like a 9 (but more assertive and focus on immediate enjoyment)
Characters: Jayce tallis, Ashoka Tano, Tony Stark, Elena, Mabel Pines, Aang, Buffy Summers and Spongebob.
Self Preservation 7 "Family"
Unlike the So7 the Sp7 is all about self enjoyment and indulgence. This subtype is described as the most gluttonous of the type 7. This is usually due to their constant need to feel pleasure and avoid distaste or discomfort in life. These 7s have a 3ish look to them to their obsession with easy fast results, assertiveness and luxury. However, a clear distinction to take into consideration is the root of the desire of luxury. The Sp7 looks at luxury as something they simply enjoy. Luxury permits the SP7 to have a broad taste for the things that brings them joy. While the 3s desire for luxury is more about symbolism and promotion of the self.
To the SX7 the idealization of romance comes from the rush of happiness and excitement from falling in love. This subtype in specific focuses on the millions of possibilities there are to live in a romantic relationship. For them finding this partner and understanding the possibilities and the different factions of their personality comes first. To SX7 the enjoyment of love and inter personality comes first and foremost. This subtype tends to look like a SX8 due to their assertive approach to romance or a SX9 due to their desire for connection with another.
Characters: Utena Tenjou, Carrie Bradhshaw, Stiles Stilnski, Lucy Gray Baird, Scott Pilgrim, Beast Boy, Ariel and Roger the alien.
Not sure if you're familiar with the enneagram personality type system, but I was wondering what Riko and Mish's types are?
I kinda picture Riko as a 3, since he seems very performative but I could also see him as a 7. It's hard to know since we don't get very many Riko POVs that are just him being normal and not in great distress. What is going on in that head of his (if anything)?
As for Mish I frankly have no idea lol.
Familiar?? Darling. Baby. My love. You have no idea how FIXATED I am with the enneagram. Also MBTI and to a lesser (but no less enthusiastic) degree, Gallup's Strengthfinder.
omg omg omg I get to talk about this
OK, first the gobbledygook. The rest of what has turned out to be an essay will be less technical sounding, I promise:
Riko is: ESTP 7w6 so/sp.
For Mish, she is asserting herself more and more as an IxTJ 8w9 so/sp.
(It hasn't yet become clear to me whether she is N or S yet... a lot of stuff happens in later arcs that would make that aspect clearer.)
OK, brace yourself. Because I am grabbing your vest and we are going on a DEEP DIVE BAYBEEEE.
So yes! Riko does present as a an Achiever (3) because of his (somewhat grotty) charm and chameleon-like behaviour. He is extremely adept at looking at situations and figuring out what they need from him and how to fold himself into the shape people want. His actions can look look very very very close to that of a 3.
BUT! The reason why he is an Enthusiast type (7) and not an Achiever/Performer type (3) is because of his CORE motivation:
A 3 is trying to prove their worth.
Riko on the other hand, is trying to stay free - of pain, of helplessness, of being trapped.
A 3's strategy is centred around effectiveness, reputation, or achievement. Riko doesn't do that. If anything, he actively resists being put on any sort of pedestal (he resisted Vetch calling him Ghosthands in the Selah arc).
In Surface Tension, Riko shows he really doesn't care about his reputation. He'll happily tell people he has an STD if it will achieve his goal of them leaving him be.
He lets people underestimate him, constantly undermines himself, and acts a lot stupider than he really is. If the spotlight ever lands on him, he worms his way out from under it. (Duck & Weave)
Not because he doesn't enjoy the attention; he actually is quite the slut for it. He's great at creating it AND holding it, when it serves him.
But he resists having people turn the spotlight on him because has learnt early in life that when people are watching you, your options dwindle. When you are in the light, you can't escape.
Vetch's attack on Riko in the Selah arc was particularly damaging because it targeted ALL the pain points of an Enthusiast (7). Riko became the centre of Vetch's obsession, and he couldn't escape. And then Vetch removed his ability to escape or speak, and trapped him in that maintenance corridor with him. No exits. No talking himself out of it. Pretty much a game over scenario for him.
Aaaaagh.
This constant need to keep moving is also why he very almost leaves in Plant, even though it's probably the best place he's landed in.
It's safe (so far), he's valued by his team, and he's built a deep relationship with Mish. You'd think they are reasons to stay, but for Riko they are reasons to LEAVE. Because they are temptation to stay still. And staying still is dangerous.
The plant is not just a cute gift from a good friend. It represents taking root, and having to STAY and take care of something. Mish and the plant and everything else GOOD are the things that terrify him, because they are all pulling at him to stay put rather than move on, which is his SOP. THAT'S why he's so scared and anxious in Plant.
And talking about fear, it's not his love for Mish that makes him stay. He's used to leaving good things behind.
It's his FEAR of seeing how she'll react to the news of him leaving. The moment she walks in that door and sees him packing, he's pretty much done for. He's been rewired so completely he cannot survive watching her be upset with him because of something he's done.
In that scene, he's stuck between the fear of being trapped by his affection for Mish and his fear of making her sad pissing her off.
Stupid boy.
Sorry, back to the enneagram.
So the reason he is 7w6 instead of 7w8 is because of how he behaves under pressure.
If he was 7w8, he would be more confrontational, a lot bolder, and less concerned with belonging.
But because he's 7w6, he tilts more toward wanting to help and to contribute. Like in Grit.
So even though outwardly his rebellion and stubbornness looks very w8, as a w6 he aims that behaviour to being in service to a group, a person or a system. That's him idiotically disobeying direct orders to evacuate the gassed tunnel and trying to his superior officer to safety in Grit. (Also, he really did delusionally think he could make it out.)
It is also very clear in how he acts with authority. A 7w8 would act in open defiance. A 7w6 reroutes. He finds loopholes, charms, redirects. In Grit, he pretended the blast had damaged his hearing and he couldn't hear his superior's orders to leave her. (That little shit.)
Oh yeah, and the fear he displays with disappointing Mish? Also very 7w6. A 7w8 is a lot more comfortable with conflict and would actually rise to meet it.
Should I write more about instincts (so/sp stuff) and his MBTI? I feel like this has become a lot longer than anyone expected... I seriously get over-excited when it comes to character design with personality frameworks. I've had to learn to gently pump the brakes when I get like this hahhahahah
Aaaaaand I haven't even written about Mish. This... is concerning.
But seriously, is this too technical and obscure? I can write a version that is less so! It does kinda count as Riko/Mish lore, I think. So I'd love for those unfamiliar with the enneagram to know what I'm on about!
For the people who haven't read the fics mentioned:
Surface Tension - Riko doesn't want to hook up. Says he has an STD.
Grit - Riko disobeys orders like the little shit he is
Plant - taking root. Very scary (for Riko).
Selah arc - he can't run, he can't hide, he can't talk his way out of this.
Duck & Weave - Riko avoids the spotlight like his life depends on it. (Because it does). This is part of the Selah crc.
