The thing about Steph is that she is a mama’s girl and by the time of Batgirl 2009, this is the sweet spot I picture in my mind:

Stephanie as she’s getting packed for university: You are ruining my independent young woman image.

Crystal: Who’s my baby girl?

Stephanie, immediately hugging her mom: Meeeeee….!

I loved @birdiegray01 ‘s little idea of Elaine, Crystal, and Talia becoming best mom friends and I couldn’t get it outta my head so I doodled them! They’re at brunch with dessert nachos and bottomless mimosas on Bruce’s tab, and Talia’s regaling them with tales of her battles. (Was really hungry drawing this I want those nachos so bad🤤)

Steph' s Relationship with School/Steph as a good student

I wanted to talk about Steph's relationship with school a bit. There was a poll a while back I saw that had Steph winning as likely to be the worst student of the Bats, and it's pretty much pure misogyny that's not supported by canon at all. Signs point to Steph being a good student if you pay attention.

In Steph's years primarily written by Chuck Dixon, what kind of student Steph was or what kind of grades she got was never directly said, but the mentions Steph does make of school imply/show that she's dilligent and dedicated as a student: She's often remembering she needs to do her homework (contrasting Tim who basically never thinks about it)

This implies she's taken something she learned in history class and applying it to her life, also.

She also does this with science:

Batgirl (2000) #20

It implies school is on her mind a lot (again, contrasting Tim)

The closest we ever see her get to complaining about school is not looking forward to doing math homework while nauseous from her pregnancy.

But it's when she goes to college we get a better look at what kind of student she is, and she's clearly a good and dedicated one despite having a busy life.

It should be noted that she was able to go straight to college despite missing a year in high school when she was "dead" and only having a month of additional high school. It could be Leslie set up a tutor or homeschool while she was with her (seems unlikely it would be consistent given they were going from village to village) but either way, it's pretty impressive she was able to essentially skip a grade and (most likely) get her GED.

The fact that Steph thinks getting all B's in college is like, bad, implies she's used to getting better grades. And the fact she gets B's while being a superhero AND having a part time job is pretty impressive.

She also calls the Great Gatsby "awesome" when describing what she's learned in college, showing a passion for her literature studies (though she does not like the Reconstruction era in history class) and that school is on her mind a lot.

And finally, she described herself as a dutiful college student.

So yeah, I'm not saying she's the BEST student of the Bats, or gets the best grades, but all signs point to her being a good and dedicated student, moreso than Dick and Tim at certain points in their lives where they saw school as a lower priority.

Hm. Everyone knows that Cluemaster being a ‘knock off Riddler’ or supervillain or rogue or whatever is not nearly as important to Steph’s narrative than the very ordinary abuse he inflicted on Steph and Crystal right. We r all on the same page right. Just so we all r aware and thinking abt it a little. Like I think it says a lot that Cluemasters first post crisis reappearance and Steph’s first comic ever features him once he’s been ‘cured’ of the whole leaving clues shtick. Like him having a compulsion to leave clues didn’t make him abusive. Thats just not what Steph means when she says he ruined her life. He’s still going to do crime, and he does, and he’s still going to be a piece of shit abuser, and he is. It doesn’t matter. He’s cured, they let him go, but his compulsions didn’t make him a bad man, and no longer having them doesn’t make him a good one. At the core of Steph’s narrative is her love for her mom, and her hate for the man who hurt them both. So little of her character and history should be tied to the whole ‘clue’ thing. I’m sorry. I think it’s a bad choice and it reduces Steph’s complexity. I find it lame and ineffective and absolute weaksauce. Part of why Batgirls 2022 didn’t land for me, though absolutely not the only reason.

jack and janet didn't leave tim home alone. tim attended boarding school.

lady shiva did not help raise cass. shiva was forced to have cain's child to save her own life and did not meet cass until she was 17.

crystal brown recovered from her addiction before steph and tim even started dating.

willis todd being abusive was a retcon and is also no longer canon. in fact, jason loves his father and actually tried to avenge his dad’s death in both post-crisis and post-flashpoint.

talia... honestly i don't even where to start with her.
