small bundle of joy
The morning settles slowly around him like the world itself knows to be quiet. The light is soft and pale and warm where it spills across the living room floor and climbs gently up the couch where he sits. Oscar is tucked into the corner with a blanket half draped over his lap and his daughter resting against him like she belongs nowhere else.
He barely moves at first. Just breathes with her. Slow and even like he is matching himself to her tiny rhythm.
She is impossibly small. One of his hands curves around her back while the other cups her head with a kind of careful certainty that feels instinctive protective without being tense. Gentle without ever slipping.
“hi sweetheart hello my girl” his voice is barely louder than the light in the room. Soft and warm and entirely hers.
Her face shifts just a little. A tiny scrunch a sleepy sound that makes his expression melt almost instantly the corner of his mouth lifts and his eyes soften in a way that is so unguarded it almost feels private.
“There you are.” he whispers. “Good morning.”
He adjusts her just slightly not because he needs to but because he wants her to be comfortable in every possible way. His thumb brushes along her cheek in the softest movement testing careful like he is learning how delicate she is and promising himself he will never be anything but gentle.
She wiggles one tiny hand escaping the blanket and reaching without purpose. He notices immediately. Of course he does. His fingers slide beneath hers and he lets her wrap around him.
The moment her hand closes around his finger he goes completely still.
There is this quiet pause in him. Like the entire world has narrowed down to that one small connection.
“Oh.” he breathes out softly. “hi”
His head tips forward just a little as if he needs to be closer. As if even the small distance between them feels like too much.
“You have got me already.” he murmurs. “Wrapped around your little finger huh that was fast.”
His voice carries a soft kind of wonder not disbelief. Just something tender and full and a little overwhelmed in the gentlest way.
He traces the back of her hand with his thumb. Slow circles. Reassuring. Steady. He watches every tiny movement she makes like it matters more than anything else because it does to him.
When she makes another small sound he reacts instantly. His arm tightens just slightly around her. Not enough to restrict her just enough to say she is safe.
“It is okay. I am right here I got you”
He rocks her slowly back and forth the motion is careful and deliberate like he has already learned her rhythm and does not want to get it wrong.
“You do not have to worry about anything.” he continues softly.
His cheek brushes lightly against the top of her head. He lingers there for a second longer than necessary. Breathing her in letting himself feel the weight of her. The warmth the reality of her being here.
Across the room there is a quiet presence. He glances up and finds you watching them. The look you both share is soft and knowing and full of something that does not need words.
He smiles at you it’s that small steady smile that feels like home.
“She is perfect.” he says quietly.
His attention drifts right back to the baby in his arms. Effortless and immediate.
She shifts again and this time her eyes flutter just slightly. Not fully awake just slightly squirming and waking up.
“Oh hello.” he whispers. “Are you waking up for me.”
He tilts his head just enough to catch her gaze. Even if it is unfocused even if she cannot really see him yet. He acts like she can like she already knows him.
“It is me.” he says gently. “It is daddy”
The word comes out soft and careful. Like he is still getting used to it like he understands how important it is and wants to hold it properly.
He adjusts the blanket around her with slow precise movements tucking it just enough to keep her warm without disturbing her every small action is thoughtful. Intentional.
“You are doing so well.” he murmurs. “You know that best baby I’ve ever seen yk??”
She makes another tiny noise a little more insistent this time he immediately shifts again bringing her closer. Supporting her head more securely his hand never hesitates.
“I know. I know.” he soothes. “I am here. I am not going anywhere.”
His voice stays calm steady there is no rush in him. No frustration just patience that feels endless.
He presses the softest kiss to her forehead. Barely there like he is afraid to wake her but cannot help himself.
“I am going to take care of you.” he whispers against her skin. “Always every single day until you’re sick of old daddy.”
His thumb continues that gentle rhythm against her arm. Back and forth. Back and forth it becomes its own quiet language between them.
For a long moment he just watches her memorising every detail the way her fingers curl the way her breathing rises and falls the tiny expressions that flicker across her face.
He looks at her like she is something extraordinary. Like she is the most important thing he has ever held.
And in the way he sits there completely still except for the small careful movements meant only for her. In the way his attention never drifts not even for a second.
It is obvious.
He is entirely hers.
Her safety.
Her comfort.
Her steady constant presence in a world she has only just entered.
And when she settles again relaxing fully against him. Trusting him without question he lets out the softest breath.
“That is it.” he murmurs. “I have got you.”
The room stays quiet. Warm. Safe.
And in that quiet he does not think about anything beyond this moment.
Just her weight in his arms.
Just her hand wrapped around his finger.
Just the quiet promise in everything he does.
Soft. Careful. Unshakably there.
The kind of father who never lets go even when he has to.
The kind who stays.
