heyy, in your trans day of visability post you mentioned lupron. what is it and what would one use it for?
Lupron (leuprolide) is a drug that blocks the production of sex hormones (estrogen and testosterone). It is used for a lot of conditions, such as prostate cancer, uterine fibroids, and endometriosis.
It is also used off label to suppress puberty in transgender youth, and sometimes to suppress testosterone production in adult transgender women.
Where it really shines is as a puberty blocker. If a child is experiencing gender dysphoria as a result of puberty, leuprolide can prevent that puberty from progressing. This means no more breast development in those assigned female at birth, and no more facial/body hair growth and voice change in those assigned male at birth. This decreases the need for gender affirming surgery later (don't need FTM top surgery if you never grow boobs).
The nice thing is that leuprolide is completely reversible- if the child decides later that they don't want to transition, they just stop the leuprolide and their puberty picks up where it left off.
If they reach the age where they can start cross-gender hormone therapy and still want to transition, they can seamlessly transition to cross-gender hormones and proceed through their chosen puberty.
