So I was bored at work and thinking about what could lead a man to be as vile as Alvin. Of course, he might have always been this way. Maybe he was a cruel and vicious person since he was a child, but the httyd books seem to like doing parallels a lot, so I wondered, what if Alvin was a boy a lot like Hiccup when he was very, very young? Smallish, soft, kind, and polite.
I think that would have gotten beaten out of him by living with the Outcasts, his horrible mother, and possibly the Outcast version of the Pirate Training Program.
From what it seems, every tribe has a version of the Pirate Training Program to train their youth. The Outcast Tribe is so violent and sadistic that its people were outcast from normal Viking society—a society where murder is justifiable, stealing is good fun, and slavery is simply a part of life. That gives you an idea of just how brutal the Outcast Tribe is. If you've been outcast by your tribe, you've pretty much already proven yourself. However, if you were born into the tribe, you would still need to prove yourself, as they don't seem like the kind of people to go easy on anyone.
I really can't theorize on what the Outcast initiation or training might look like, but the sky's the limit. Whatever dead-dove-do-not-eat, dark, grim, bloody scenario you can think of, I really wouldn't put anything past these people. All-out war. Maybe Alvin had friends who were kinder and weaker than the others, and he had to watch them get torn to absolute pieces. Maybe he even had to torture or kill them himself as part of the initiation into the tribe. Maybe cannibalism was involved. Why not? They already do it.
Then, in order to cope with what he's done, he adopts the persona of Alvin the Treacherous. Sometimes it can feel easier to just be a "bad person" rather than a person who did a bad thing, because then you have someone else to blame. It's not HIS fault he does what he does--he's evil; destiny made him evil; the Treacherous blood made him evil.
The more he sinks into this mustache-twirling, conniving villain, the easier all the hurt becomes to swallow. After years of pretending not to care, pretending to like violence to keep himself sane, eventually he starts to not care and enjoy it for real.
This could be part of the reason he hates Hiccup so much. Firstly, Hiccup would remind Alvin of a part of his past he tried to bury. Secondly, when they first meet, Alvin might be jealous of Hiccup's life, the life he desperatly wanted but never had. Sure, Hiccup gets bullied, but he has friends who aren't dead, a family who genuinely loves him, and a teacher who's--to a degree--actually concerned about his survival.
His hatred of Hiccup would only grow the more hardships Hiccup faces because, whereas Alvin's trials made him cruel, Hiccup only seemed to become kinder and more selfless as a result. Hiccup keeps winning without having to become monstrous, forcing Alvin to consider that maybe it didn't HAVE to be the way it was. Maybe it COULD have been better. Maybe he COULD have been better.
None of this excuses Alvin's actions, but it did give me some interesting perspective. As much as I do love Alvin being a simple, theatrical cartoon villain, it's fun, it is still interesting to consider alternative angles. The worst people in the world are still people, and I think that's the tragedy.
It originally started as an accident. Hiccup, wanting to avoid any more accidents in regards to dragon training, decided to have all current and prospective dragon trainers fill in a form that listed all their disabilities, issues and petty grievances. Of course, since he drafted and helped his dad and Gobber finalise the document, he knew what all the boxes were going to say.
His only excuse was that his ‘pampered princess’ of a dragon, as Snotlout called Toothless, didn’t like to be kept from his morning flight. So, Hiccup, in his distraction, hadn’t filled his form in with the right attention to detail. It didn’t help that Gobber came in with the other riders after Hiccup had left and picked up the ‘completed’ form.
“Has anyone seen Hiccup today?” Asked Gobber, frowning at the form his was holding.
“No, why?” Answered Fishlegs, looking up from his own half-complete form.
“Because he ticked a box he shouldn't have.” Answered Gobber, making Astrid pause as she washed Stormfly.
“What did he put?” Asked Snotlout, looking for a reason to throw his form away.
“It's probably something stupid.” Dismissed Astrid, going back to Stormfly as her dragon started grumbling, “You’re getting as bad as Toothless.”
“He's ticked the box saying that he's pregnant.” Said Gobber, making Astrid freeze, and Snotlout and the twins burst into laughter.
“Hiccup's having a baby?” Laughed Tuffnut, “How?”
“Astrid's been spending a lot of time with him.” Suggested Ruffnut, waggling her eyebrows at Astrid.
“Shut up.” Snapped Astrid, giving Ruffnut a glare.
“Astrid, why weren't you using protection?” Demanded Snotlout in mock outrage.
“Protection from what?”
The twins and Snotlout’s laughter died down, for the total of five seconds, as they looked at Hiccup and burst into harder laughter.
Hiccup blinked, before looking at Fishlegs, who was trying not to laugh, Astrid, who was glaring at Ruffnut, and Gobber, who was holding a form.
“Is… everything okay?” Asked Hiccup, as Gobber looked at the form and at Hiccup.
“How long have ye been expecting?” Asked Gobber, getting fresh laughter from Snotlout and the twins.
“Expecting what?” Asked Hiccup, “Guys?”
Sighing, Astrid left Stormfly, the Nadder complaining as she walked away, and took the form from Gobber and showed it to Hiccup, “Apparently, you’re pregnant.”
Frowning, Hiccup took the form and looked at it, quickly locating the pregnant tick box, right next to the ‘amputee’ tick box, “O-oh! Right, sorry.” Hiccup licked a finger and quickly rubbed out the mark and quickly ticked the correct box, “Toothless was creating, so I just…rushed it.”
“So, you’re not pregnant?” Asked Snotlout, getting a sigh from Hiccup.
“No, Snotlout.” Answered Hiccup, as Astrid went back over to Stormfly to finish her bath.
That should’ve been the end of the discussion, and most of them thought it was, except the whole situation had tickled the combined half-braincell that the Thorston Twins shared.

The next time it was brought up, they were on the brink of war with the Lava Louts, a tribe of Vikings to the south of Berk. The Hairy Hooligans had been discussing their options, when Ruffnut and Tuffnut proposed a plan, which they said wasn’t going to take long.
“-Step number 879--” Continued Tuffnut, as the Tribe tried not to fall asleep.
“The most important step.” Interrupted Ruffnut, getting a sigh from Stoick and a groan from Hiccup.
“-Astrid gets Hiccup pregnant.” Finished Tuffnut, getting a stunned silence from the rest of the tribe.
“I’m sorry?” Asked Stoick, frowning at the twins, “What was that last one?”
“Astrid gets Hiccup pregnant.” Said Tuffnut, looking up at the chief.
“You mean Hiccup gets Astrid pregnant, right?” Asked Alvid, frowning at them.
“No, Astrid gets Hiccup pregnant and he gives birth.” Answered Tuffnut, as Astrid opened her mouth.
“No,” Hiccup stopped her from talking, “no, let them think it through, I want to see how long it takes them.”
Astrid didn’t look very happy about it, but did as Hiccup said, before everyone watched the twins leave the mead hall.
“They… they were serious.” Said Phlegma, incredulously, “Those mad sheep thieves were actually serious.”
“They’ll lose interest and find something new to poke fun at soon enough.” Dismissed Stoick, “Hiccup, I want you, Astrid, Snotlout and Fishlegs to go to the other tribes, see if they are either willing to aid us or, at least, stay neutral.”
Hiccup nodded, “Okay, Astrid, go to Berserker Island, Mala and Dagur should be willing to hear us out. Fishlegs, I want you to go to the Bog Islands, Camicazi’s not going to want to listen to anything I, or Astrid, say.”
The pair nodded, before leaving.
“Snotlout, we’re going to hit multiple tribes, I want you to go to the Meathead, Uglithugs, and the Glums, you have the best relationship with them.” Ordered Hiccup, “I’ll go to the Outcasts, Murderous and Hysterics.”
“What about the other tribes?” Asked Hoark, getting Hiccup’s attention, “We have other riders that can go to them.”
“They’ll be needed here,” Said Stoick, “we’ll need them close if the Lava Louts decide to attack us while Hiccup and his riders are gone.”
Hoark didn’t look happy, but he nodded, prompting Hiccup to grab Snotlout’s shoulder and leave the hall.

The meetings with the other tribes hadn’t gone well, the Berserkers, Outcasts, Bog Burglars and Meatheads stood with Berk, while the rest stood with the Lava Louts, with three other tribes remaining neutral.
Hiccup thought the fact that they were at war would make the twins take things seriously, but he soon found himself mistaken, since Ruffnut proposed a plan to get the war to end quickly, which was somewhat plausible, until Ruffnut finished.
“-and, to cap it all off, Astrid gets Hiccup pregnant.” Said Ruffnut, making the gathered Tribes go silent.
“I'm sorry?” Asked Heather, who was standing in for Dagur, who was trying to get the Hysterics to switch sides.
“Astrid gets Hiccup pregnant,” Clarified Tuffnut, as if Heather was stupid, “Astrid puts a baby in Hiccup, what's so difficult to understand?”
“I...” Heather tried to find the words, “don't think that's gonna happen.”
“Oh, Heather,” Scoffed Ruffnut, “you're so innocent.”
“No, I mean—” Heather tried to explain, only for Hiccup to cut her off.
“Ignore them, Heather,” Sighed Hiccup, “we're pretty sure they’re stupid and don't know how reproduction works.”
“It’s a wonder that they survived this long.” Agreed Thuggory, leaning against a table, “Odin knows we would’ve thrown them into the sea.”
Heather gave a hesitant nod, deciding to drop the subject. Of course, that didn’t stop Hiccup from stumbling across Tuffnut and Dagur a couple of hours later.
“-and once Hiccup has had Astrid's baby—” Said Tuffnut, completely oblivious to Hiccup standing in the doorway.
“I'm sorry, once Hiccup has had Astrid's what?” Interrupted Dagur, looking up from his knife.
“Astrid's baby,” Answered Tuffnut, “well, he's not pregnant yet, but he will be.”
“O...kay?” Said Dagur, before spotting Hiccup, “Brother! You are a ‘brother’, right?”
“Yes, I’m a guy, Dagur.” Sighed Hiccup, deciding to walk further into the room, “Gothi, Dad, Gobber and my Aunt can attest to that. How’d it go with you?”
“Uncle Nutjob agreed to switch sides,” Said Dagur, “apparently you, Snotlout and Astrid burning that pirate fleet shocked some sense into him.”
“I’m just glad I didn’t have to fight him or Baldur.” Confessed Hiccup, his eyes going to a bandage on his right arm, “Like I did Viktor.”
“Viktor was an ass, I’m pretty sure Vicious is glad he’s dead.” Said Dagur, waving a hand, “Besides, there’re hundreds more left.”
Hiccup sighed and gave Dagur a nod.

“Do you think we should pretend I am pregnant?” Asked Hiccup, glancing down at Astrid a few months later, “See if it gets the twins to stop.”
“It won't.” Sighed Astrid, as she stopped tracing invisible patterns on Hiccup’s chest, “I’m pretty sure it’ll just encourage them.”
“Okay,” Said Hiccup, adjusting himself so he could look at her properly, “what would you suggest?”
“I break the barriers of biology and get you pregnant?” Joked Astrid, before sighing, “You never explained why Camicazi didn’t like us.”
“There was a betrothal agreement,” Said Hiccup, his thoughts turning to his friend, “Dad and Spitelout hammered it out with Bertha, then the Dragon war ended, and the Tribe was suddenly less willing to lose me, and the agreement was broken.”
“And Camicazi didn’t take it well.” Said Astrid, as the conclusion appeared in her mind.
“Yeah, she… she thought that I suddenly decided that she wasn’t good enough or that I didn’t want to go through with it.” Said Hiccup, staring at the ceiling of their tent.
“Would you?” Asked Astrid, sitting up, “Gone through with it?”
“If I hadn’t shot Toothless down, probably.” Confessed Hiccup, “Gods, things would’ve been so different.”
“We wouldn’t be a thing.” Said Astrid, hollowly, “And Camicazi wouldn’t be a prisoner of the Lava Louts.”
“Yeah.” Hummed Hiccup, before lying down on the bed.
“We might not even be at war.” Said Astrid, lying back down and resting her head on Hiccup’s chest.
Hiccup chose not to dwell on that thought.

“Okay, how do I look?” Asked Hiccup, adjusting the two pillows he’d shoved under his shirt.
“I don't know,” Said Astrid, tilting her head, “it's not really giving pregnant vibes, just... fat.”
“Lassie,” Said Gobber, from his spot at a table, “there's a fine line between pregnant and fat.”
“How the heck do you know?” Asked Astrid, getting a small smirk from Hiccup, who knew Astrid really hated swearing.
“Gobber asked Valka if she was finally putting on some 'winter bulk' when she was carrying Hiccup.” Said Stoick, “I honestly thought that she was going to kill him, especially since she knocked Gordon’s teeth out.”
“Gordon,” Said Hiccup, “as in Gordon the Gummy?”
“He was originally Gordon the Grievous.” Supplied Gobber, “Let it be said, that woman threw quite the punch.”
“Oh, so that’s where you get it from.” Said Astrid, looking at Hiccup, “Since you knock three of Snotlout’s teeth out when you punched him.”
“Of course he’s got a decent punch on him,” Scoffed Gobber, “half of his struggles in the forge are just theatrics, he capable to lifting a Warhammer with one hand.”
“And the first thing he did after losing a leg and waking up from a month-long coma was ride the fastest dragon in the world,” Added Stoick, “and what you told us about that brief war with the Dragon Hunters, he was more like a force of nature than a person.”
“And he practically ended our most recent war.” Said Gobber, “Facing and killing both Logan the Cruel, and Lincon the Kin-slayer in single combat.”
Hiccup’s thoughts went to how the Hooligan/Lava Lout war ended, they’d torn though the Burning Ilses defences, sacking and burning the garrisons and taking the villagers away from the fighting. Hiccup, after all his previous feats in the war, had been named as a sword master, and fought Logan during the sacking, taking his hand and then his head. Lincon had arrived just as Hiccup removed his son’s head.
Lincon had killed his brothers and their children in order to claim the chiefdom of the Burning Ilses. Defeating him had been fairly easy, with Hiccup using Inferno to take the top half of his head, leaving him with just his lower jaw and tongue.
“Maybe you should lose a pillow,” Suggested Astrid, jerking Hiccup from his thoughts, “make it look like you’re in the early stages.”
“That…” Hiccup thought it over, “could work.”

A week later Hiccup was sitting in the mead hall, in full view of the doors, with a pillow shoved up his shirt. Part of him wondered if it would work, then he saw Ruffnut and Tuffnut in the doorway from the corner of his eye, who, upon seeing Hiccup with a 'baby' belly, ran off.
Hiccup quickly removed the pillow and stuffed it under his seat, twenty minutes later, Ruffnut and Tuffnut returned with half the tribe, and a significant number of their allies.
“See?!” Cried Ruffnut, pointing at an obviously not pregnant Hiccup.
“What?” Asked Hiccup, looking at the crowd.
“Where is it?” Demanded Tuffnut, looking around Hiccup.
“Where is what?” Asked Hiccup, feigning innocence.
“The baby bump!” Yelled Ruffnut, joining Tuffnut in looking for the ‘missing’ bump.
“What baby bump?” Questioned Hiccup, raising an eyebrow.
“Your baby bump!” Snapped Tuffnut, looking at Hiccup.
“My…” Hiccup did his best to look confused, “I don't have a baby bump.”
“Yes, you did!” Cried Ruffnut, as the crowd left, grumbling, “Where is it?”
“B-b-b-but- he- there—” Stammered Tuffnut, looking after the crowd, as Hiccup discreetly shoved the pillow back up his shirt after everyone left.
“Oh, you mean this bump?” Asked Hiccup, making Ruffnut and Tuffnut’s attention, with them staring at the bump, “Me and Astrid got careless.”
“Why are you telling us?” Asked Ruffnut, looking at Hiccup suspiciously, while Tuffnut look awed.
“Because...” Said Hiccup, removing the pillow and held it up to them, “no one will ever believe you.”
Tuffnut looked between Hiccup and the pillow in a shocked silence, while Ruffnut glared at Hiccup and sneered, “You sick bastard.”
“Bold words, coming from the two idiots who think born men can get pregnant.” Deadpanned Hiccup, giving them a flat look.
“Our uncle Pregnut got pregnant!” Snapped Ruffnut, crossing her arms.
“Because, believe it or not, you’re Uncle was born a woman.” Said Hiccup, “I would ask if you actually paid attention to Gothi’s healing lessons, but obviously you didn’t.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?!” Demanded Ruffnut, as Tuffnut looked confused.
“Men’s pelvises can’t accommodate giving birth,” Explained Hiccup, know this was just going to go in one ear and out the other, “they’re too narrow, women’s pelvises are shallower and wider so they can accommodate giving birth.”
“What?” Asked the twin, looking dumbfounded.
Sighing, Hiccup rolled his eyes, “You know what, never mind.”
Without waiting for a response from the twins, Hiccup left the mead hall, leaving the twins in a stunned silence.
“He’s right.” Said Tuffnut, after a moment, “No one is going to believe us.”
The pair watched Hiccup walk to the docks, grabbing a torch as he went. Silently, they followed the rest of the tribe to the sea of longboats that carried their dead, Big-Boobied Bertha, Chieftess of the Bog Burglar Tribe, Mogadon the Meathead, Chief of the Meatheads, Phlegma the Fierce, Starkard, and several other warriors had been lost throughout the three year long war. They’d been unable to hold funerals for them because the Lava Louts always made sure to keep a garrison of warriors behind to collect the bodies.
The dead were all wrapped in canvas salvaged from the sails of sunken ships, and had been doused in some flammable liquid Hiccup had accidentally made while trying to make whiskey, a drink from the south.
Dragons pulled the boats out of the docks, with Stoick, Hiccup, and the other leaders and Chiefs fired burning arrows into the boats, followed by the rest of the warriors. Hiccup sighed as they all watched the burning sea, he felt Astrid appear next to him.
“How’d the prank go?”
“They fell for it.” Answered Hiccup, “But, they did keep morale up, even if we were the butt end of the joke.”
“Yeah.” Murmured Astrid, before glancing at the twins, “Looks like Fishlegs and Snotlout are trying to get close to Ruff.”
Hiccup let out a quiet snort, “Really? With what happened to Snotlout?” When he got a nod from Astrid, he sighed, “Well, I wish them luck, Ruffnut is as dense as a boulder.”
Feeling Astrid sigh, Hiccup wrapped an arm around her.
“We should probably help Fishlegs.” Said Astrid, getting a chuckle from Hiccup, “I’m pretty sure everyone would listen to Hiccup the Heartless.”
“I really don’t like that name.” Muttered Hiccup, before sighing, “That can wait. Let’s just…”
“Relax?” Asked Astrid, getting a nod from Hiccup, “That sounds good.”
A horn being blown drew their attention, where they saw half the crowd heading to the mead hall for the funeral feast.
“You know,” Said Hiccup, after a moment, “we probably should head up there, get some of the good food before Gobber eats it all.”
“Especially since one of us is walking for two.” Quipped Astrid, getting a laugh out of Hiccup as they started heading up the docks.
Why Would the Outcasts Pick Outcast Island as Their Main Base? (HTTYD)
Hello, my fellow Furians! Here's another HTTYD article for you today. We'll be talking about another Outcast topic.
Why Outcast Island?
Why would the Outcasts live on a barren, unforgiving, dragon-infested, desolate, and volcanic island that, at best, makes a decent base for pirating and not much else? Maybe a hideout where they can restock on supplies and use it as a halfway point to various islands that they can raid — such as Berk, Meathead Islands, and various other islands and Tribes.
However, I just can't believe that is their primary residence. Food would be difficult to come by, and none of the land is arable for growing crops or husbanding livestock. Also, even if there was, you're constantly having to deal with dragons who aggressively attack, and thus livestock would be slain, and crops would be burned or taken.
Furthermore, the only tree species able to live on this desolate island is the Loki Tree, which requires little to no organic material or moisture to grow.
The only fish that we know of that can be gleaned, aside from fish from the sea in general, is the Icetail Pike, which can be fished in the only water source on Outcast Island: the Lake.
Other than that, the only food that can be foraged is from the sea, from nearby islands, and from raiding other Tribes. Also, there's the morbid possibility that they're also hunting down dragons and eating them for days when food is hard to get.
Now, in Defenders of Berk's "A View to a Skrill Part 2", we see the Outcasts and Berserkers having a feast celebrating their alliance against Berk. However, it is unclear how this food was obtained — whether through trade (via Trader Johann, who DOES trade with them), through raiding, pillaging, or donated by the Berserkers.
Another possibility is that their womenfolk gave it to them.
Oh? What do you mean, Noctus?
I mean exactly what I mean, and it's exactly what my article is about.
I suspect that the Outcasts have ANOTHER ISLAND that we might not know about — an island where they can grow and raise food, have comfortable housing, and, of course, raise their families. After all, it's impossible for women and children to live on Outcast Island when there's a bunch of dragons attacking you, and the island is so barren and desolate.
As such, I believe that Outcast Island is a forward base of operations used to repair and resupply ships and raid nearby islands and passing ships. Another reason I believe this is because Outcast Island is close to Berk, which is helpful to Alvin since he had wished to conquer Berk at one point.
Also, it's doubtful that we have an entire Tribe of Outcasts who are single or alone. Sure, I'm sure there are many who became Outcasts as single men or had left their families on their home islands so that they didn't have to suffer the treacherous tribulation. Being outlawed was the same as being picked for the Hunger Games: almost an immediate death sentence. Many either died from starvation, drowning, slain by an eager bounty hunter for glory, attacked by wild animals, or ended their own lives. It was a very dark time for such people. Many were either alone, or came together in groups to form bands. Some even get big enough to be small "tribes" of their own, albeit Outcast ones. However, there were some who brought their families with them, either because they were all moving to another location or because they refused to part with their outcasted patriarch.
In the Books, the Outcasts were rebels led by Grimbeard's son Thugheart, who brought their families with them with the dark ambition to one day claim the Kingdom of the Wilderwest. So I wouldn't be surprised if TV Alvin's Outcasts have done something similar here.
That being said, I could be totally wrong, and that THESE Outcasts are all single and are a male-only group of pirates and Outcast Island is the only island they can obtain at the moment, hence one of the reasons why Alvin — and ultimately the Outcasts themselves — were so obsessed with conquering Berk for themselves.
However, nonetheless, I wouldn't be surprised if, after their redemption arc, the Outcasts eventually find themselves an island they can live on while Outcast Island becomes more of an outpost/prison/garrison/storehouse island. Heck, the Outcasts could either be allowed to live on Berk, or even be GIVEN Berk if the Hooligan Tribe left to colonize New Berk.

After Redemption, Will the Outcasts Remain an Independent Tribe, or Will They Join Berk? (HTTYD / RTTE)
Hello, my fellow Furians! Welcome to another HTTYD article. We'll be diving into another Outcast question today.
After reconciling with Berk and defeating Dagur's forces, would Alvin and his Outcasts JOIN Berk and become a permanent part of their community — essentially getting absorbed — or would they remain as an independent Tribe, allies but not subordinates?
The short answer? No, they would remain independent allies of Berk.
Long answer? Well, we'll be getting into that in this article.
As you know from my previous article, you'll know that I have a hard time believing that Outcast Island is their only island, as, at best, it's good only as a forward base for raiding or resupply, or even as a prison. But as a place to grow food and raise families, no, it's impossible. So I suspect they have another island somewhere, albeit smaller than Berk. Or perhaps they find a better island for themselves after the events of Defenders of Berk.
However, we mustn't ever forget that they are OUTCASTS. A Tribe full of outcasts, outlaws, criminals, murderers, pirates, rebels, traitors, and political and religious rivals. Even if the feud between them and Berk is over, it doesn't mean that they cease being outcasts and pirates. After all, Berk wasn't the ONLY enemy that the Outcasts made for themselves. In reality, by becoming an Outcast, everyone becomes your enemy. The pursuit of your head becomes a free-for-all. So, until a certain high-rank individual approves, the Outcasts must always attack, and others must attack them until they become legitimate or perish.
So, as a result, Berk cannot absorb them without themselves being under scrutiny by the other Tribes. Also, as I've said, many of the Outcasts are murderers, criminals, thieves, pirates, etc, so there'll definitely be those who won't have any desire to live with the Berkians, and vice versa. After all, there are a few reasons why many Outcasts joined Dagur and stayed with him despite Alvin having shown himself still alive. The Outcasts aren't a monolithic and united "tribe," but a motley blending of various persons from various walks of life and of various personalities.
In fact, in Episode 1 of Race to the Edge, "The Dragon Eye of the Beholder," there were Outcast traitor(s) who helped Dagur escape from Outcast Island. And there were Outcast prisoners who were in cells along with Dagur and his Berserkers. Which means that there are Outcasts who refuse to adhere to Alvin's authority and obey his orders. I also suspect that several of them disapproved of Alvin's change in policy concerning Berk. I wouldn't even be surprised if there were some who left Outcast Island for other hunting grounds.
So I cannot think of any situation that could realistically incorporate the Outcasts into the Hooligan Tribe successfully without negative or even fatal consequences.
The only way I could see Berkians and Outcasts conjoining together into one mega-tribe is for survival's sake. Or the Berkians became Outcasts themselves — an alternate universe where the other Viking Tribes, upon hearing that Berk befriends and rides dragons, remember Drago, and declare Berk a Tribe of Outcasts, and declare war on them.
Aside from some Outcasts with families possibly wanting to migrate to Berk, I believe the Outcasts will remain an independent community and find themselves an island they can live on properly with Outcast Island as their outpost/prison. And as shown in Race to the Edge, the Outcasts became staunch allies for Berk against Dagur's forces (who were also Outcasts) and the Dragon Hunters.
Assuming, of course, there was a more realistic reason to abandon Berk (aside from the nonsense we got in "Hidden World"), such as... an earthquake or volcano or some other trouble, or perhaps they wanted to live on a larger island, I believe that they could've left Berk to Alvin and his Incasts, ironically fulfilling Alvin's once-held ambition and goal from his Outcast days, having once been a Berkian himself.

Who Became the New Inhabitants of Old Berk After the Berkians Left? (HTTYD 3)
Hello, everyone! Welcome to another HTTYD article. Today will begin one of my few HTTYD 3 articles that I plan on doing. But this'll also tie into my Alvin-cum-Outcasts series.
So what happened to Old Berk after the Berkians left? Somebody would've had to have occupied it at some point. However, this is assuming that the Berkians haven't kept their claim on Old Berk and still have it as part of their territories.
Of course, perhaps the remains of the Northern Alliance had taken it over. But I highly doubt the other Viking Tribes would've tolerated their presence in their waters.
It's possible that the Berserkers or some other Tribe took it over after the Berkians left. Someone who's geographically close to Berk or had a close relationship with Berk.
Or it's possible Berk was abandoned for a time, and then maybe some future settlers came to live on it much later — assuming, of course, it wasn't abandoned indefinitely or even permanently.
If we follow the Books, the Berkians, of course, NEVER left Berk, even after the dragons left. Even if they did, I'm sure the Meatheads would've taken Berk over due to being just a skip across the pond.
However, I propose a plausible candidate who took over Berk after the Berkians' migration:
The Outcasts!
It is my headcanon, and theory, that it was the Outcasts who eventually inherited Old Berk from the Hooligans/Berkians. I mean, the Outcasts have to find some sort of land at some point.
I mean, LOOK AT THIS! Outcast Island is dreary, gloomy, barren, dry; full of rocks, crags, and dragons; and is volcanic in nature. You literally can't scrounge any sort of prosperity and survivability from this island.
It's only useful for one purpose: a military base-cum-outpost for raiding and pillaging passing ships and nearby islands.
There's the Loki tree which is common on the island and is often used as some form of caulking and chalking agent. It's also used for charcoal. It is malodorous in nature and is able to thrive in dry and barren places. It is possible that it smells terrible due to the volcanic environment it's in, having a sulfuric scent.
There's also the Ice Tail Pike, which only can be found on Outcast Island (which is strange when you think about it since there's no ice anywhere on the island). I highly doubt it's "rare" though — there's so much of them.
So the Outcasts basically have to get their food from the sea, any raids they conduct on other islands or any ships they plunder, and if they're lucky, trade from Johann (which is odd in and of itself). I haven't seen any livestock on there. And it's been mentioned and implied in several episodes that Outcasts also eat dragon eggs a lot, and maybe dragons themselves — proof of the desperate measures they must take to sustain themselves.
After they ally themselves with Berk to defeat Dagur in "Cast Out," however, things change, and Alvin and Stoick are able to resolve their past grievances and restore their lost friendship.
In RTTE, the second time we see them, they come to Berk's aid and protect Berk while the Dragon Riders fly to Vanaheim and Stoick is... recovering from his battle injuries. Honestly, if Alvin wasn't reformed, this would've been the best opportunity to take over Berk for himself with Stoick incapacitated and the Riders absent from Berkian skies. But c'est la vie. 🤷♂️😌
I honestly wouldn't be surprised if, during this time or some other situation or another, Stoick and Alvin came to an agreement that should anything happen to Stoick and Hiccup, or if the Berkians are forced to leave Berk, Alvin and the Outcasts could take Berk for themselves.
I mean, you say their island. They obviously need an island on which they can lead a more normal livelihood and also gain wives and sire the next generation (because I have no idea how they'll be able to keep their numbers up if they don't).
Of course, it may be that the Outcasts have grown so used to their life on Outcast Island that they don't have any inclination to move elsewhere. If so, then I could see them extensively trading with Berk and other traders for the goods that they need. 🤷♂️
But I can't see Alvin's desire for Berk dissipating just because he's reformed. I'm sure he still has ambitions for "something more." Berk would be a great additional island for them. Even if they just use Berk as a home for their families and various craftsmen and farmers, and place some defences and dragons to protect Berk, whilst remaining on Outcast Island, the ends are still achieved.
Yes, Alvin, it's good to be back on the shores of Berk! 😁

Fishlegs the Outcast? (HTTYD/RTTE Fanon Headcanon)
Well met, my fellow Furians! And welcome to another article! Today's topic will dive into the relationship between Alvin and Fishlegs in the RTTE Season 5 episode "Return of Thor Bonecrusher".
This will leap from my Outcast/Incast Redemption Headcanon articles, and I have a lovely little fanon headcanon for you guys. 😆
So for those of you who've read my Alvin the Trustworthy/Outcast Tribe-Turned-Incast Tribe headcanon articles (here, here, and here), and have seen my X Leaves Berk fanfic ideas (here), you'll probably recognize this topic a little bit. 😏😉
I also have a theory/headcanon article about Fishlegs being Alvin's son that you can read here.
What if Fishlegs was an Outcast? Instead of your usual Hiccup Leaves Berk AU fanfic or comic, what if it was Fishlegs who left Berk? There are many ways to do it: from having wanderlust and wanting to travel, to being banished for one reason or another, or having indirectly harmed somebody, or even from him banishing himself from Berk, or wanting to become a merchant. There are so many ways to go about this when it comes to Fishlegs. I find it sad that nobody's ever thought of anyone else leaving Berk besides Hiccup. 😢
But I'm digressing. Back to my original question: What if Fishlegs was an Outcast? Whether this happened before, during, or after Alvin's redemption; whether this happened in HTTYD 1, RoB, DoB, or RttE; or whether Fishlegs truly became an Outcast for one reason or another is beside the point.
After watching "Return of Thor Bonecrusher," I've come to an idea that I've never thought about: What if Fishlegs became an Outcast? What if the result of that event brought about a series of scenarios that would change Fishlegs' life forever?
What if Alvin, having been impressed with Fishlegs' courage and his help in rescuing him from bandits, that he decided to go to Berk and asked both Stoick and Fishlegs' parents if he could adopt him as his heir to the Outcast-now-Incast Tribe?
In Viking society, adoption and foster parenting was a big part of their culture and they were one of the many ways to build or solidify alliances or friendships with each other.
Now we know that, canonically speaking, Fishlegs remained on Berk and probably would've refused the offer even if it had been proffered to him. But this is why this is a fanon headcanon. 😏🤫
What would happen if Fishlegs had accepted the offer of adoption, and left his family and Berk to become Alvin's heir of the OutIncast Tribe? I think the majority if not all of the Outcasts would unanimously vote in favor of that, if that episode was anything to go by.
But I think it'd be great since Alvin doesn't have an heir and is getting on in years. It'd be a great relief on his mind if he had somebody capable who could lead the Incasts.
Crap, now that makes me want to write a fanfic about that! 😂

Who Replaced Savage as Alvin's Chief Subordinate? (Defenders of Berk/RTTE)
Hello, everyone! Welcome to another HTTYD article! Today, we'll be going into another Alvin/Outcast topic!
Anyone wonder who replaced Savage as Alvin's subordinate after Dagur's defeat at the Defenders of Berk finale? Savage fled after Dagur's capture, and Alvin was left sans a right-hand man. So who took over his position?
I can think of a few people. Though, it could always be somebody that we don't even know. But, for argument's sake, let's start with four likely candidates. With one additional fanon option, which I'll add at the end of this.
The first candidate I'd like to present you as a likely option is this guy in the Riders of Berk episode "Alvin and the Outcasts," where he runs to Alvin, who's in Stoick's place, and reports of having been given reports by Scouts about Bucket and Mulch with a bunch of others heading to Thor's Beach, along with Stoick and a group heading into the forest.
We also see in later on, when he's stranded on Dragon Island with Alvin, Savage, and others.
Personally, I like this guy. He looks like he's got a good head on his shoulders, and he's got a pretty nice voice. Sadly, he doesn't have a name despite having a speaking part since he doesn't have one in the credits. 😔🙏🏻
So let's just call him Hugin, after one of Odin's ravens who reports to him all he finds. 🤷♂️
It's hard to tell if we see him in other episodes after this, since it's been awhile since I've watched ROB, and we also have to deal with the multiple Outcast minion clones that resemble him. 😵💫
The Second Candidate for the position of Alvin's chief subordinate is this guy, found in RTTE Season 6 episode "Return of Thor Bonecrusher", who talks to the Gang and informs them about the situation, as well as the pike:
Let's call him Cheeky, due to his cheekguards. (I honestly don't know what to say about that helmet. It's not even covering his cheeks but his nose area instead. 💀 Is his beard THAT bushy? 😅)
Now, this could be pure coincidence — again, given the clones DreamWorks Dragons LOVES to duplicate — but we also see him in "Alvin and the Outcasts", along with, I assume, the first candidate I've just mentioned earlier, convening with Alvin in their Great Hall, listening to Alvin's plan about capturing the "Dragon Conqueror".
Judging from this picture above, I'm assuming that he's one of Alvin's subordinates, since usually the only ones allowed to be in-the-know about a chieftain's plans or schemes are those under their retinue: the commanders who lead the men and keep things somewhat civilized and orderly.
Of course, the men in these two pics look different: One looks rather friendly while the other one just above us looks rather stern and focused, as a subordinate ought to be. So this could just be two completely different people. Though that could be that he only gets "that way" — friendly and talkative — when talking about Ice Pike. (That, actually could be very interesting. 😮 A literal ice-breaker, that. 🤭)
So in case I'm wrong, let me clarify: the second candidate is the one we see in "Alvin and the Outcasts," just like this fella here just down below, wearing a... full-faced spangenhelm — the Third Candidate:
Let's call him Helmface.
We also see him in "Return of Thor Bonecrusher," and, if memory serves, he was with Cheeky when he explained the pike, and then threw up when Fishlegs, as Thor, ate one of them raw. 💀
In ROB's "Alvin and the Outcasts," we also see him — or who we assume is him — among those stranded with Alvin.
However, keep in mind that full-helmed goons for Outcasts, Berserkers and Hunters are usually just your run-of-the-mill common soldier. So I may be fully wrong and am just assuming that since the other two subordinates are there that he is also a subordinate.
And now we get to the Fourth and Final Candidate: Mildew.
That's right. Mildew.
As you know, in the ROB finale, as well as Defenders of Berk, Mildew has become an Outcast and serves Alvin. And after learning how to train dragons thanks to Hiccup impromptu dragon training lesson, he uses this knowledge to teach the Outcasts how to train dragons — namely Whispering Deaths and even Changewings.
(I'll be honest, I was rather disappointed that they passed on the opportunity to have a bunch of Outcast Dragon Riders. That would've been much more entertaining. And that would've been an extra nod to the books. That really should've been added. 😢😔)
He's also shown to be really intelligent, not only in being competent in handling the dragons, but also came up with several ideas to deal with the dragons: In ROB's "Dragon Flower," he bought Blue Oleanders which was basically poison for the dragons and thus weakened them considerably (honestly, it would've been great to utilize blue oleander to keep dragons away from certain places or as a type of defensive measure, etc — another lost opportunity); In "Dragons We Trust," Mildew successfully used his dragon tools to frame the dragons and get them banished from Berk, thus leaving Berk open to an Outcast raid (you can read here). In DOB's "Live and Let Fly," "The Iron Gronkle," "Tunnel Vision," and "Worst in Show," Mildew set a plan to destroy Berk from within by using Whispering Death eggs. And, unintentionally, it brought forth the Screaming Death, which gave a much greater challenge to Berk; and he also then suggested using those tunnels made by the Whispering Deaths to sneak into Berk and do whatever they wanted, and was able to capture Meatlug as a result.
And finally, at the end in the DOB finale episode "Cast Out," he was the inside man which helped Alvin and Hiccup to sneak onto Outcast Island and free Stoick and defeat Dagur. I don't know how he got caught, since I'm sure Savage or the other Outcasts should've told Dagur about him, the Whispering Deaths, and the caves. But they either don't know, or, in Savage's case, perhaps he didn't like Mildew's increasing importance within the Outcast Tribe and didn't want him doing the same thing as a Berserker subordinate. Who knows. But that would actually be interesting. 🤔🤷♂️ But all we know is that Mildew was one of the few Outcasts who knew about Alvin's return and helped him defeat Dagur.
In conclusion, Mildew is a resourceful and intelligent individual, despite his acrimonious and recalcitrant complaints. He obviously keeps all that to himself while on Outcast Island, since he could lose his head. Or maybe he just genuinely enjoys not being on Berk. Who knows. 🤷♂️
According to School of Dragons game lore — and you guys know how much I avoid game and comic lore to the hilt! — Mildew apparently can't stand that there are too many dragons both on Outcast Island and on Berk, and thus travels to a less-populated island called Icestorm Island. This would, of course, disprove this theory that Mildew became Alvin's chief subordinate, if this is true.
So this is up to you guys on whether you wish to incorporate this part of the game lore into it or not. Personally, I don't. So I'll be ignoring this. That being said, though, it WOULD be like Mildew to try to get away from dragons. But in the show, Mildew looked like he was having a soft spot for the Whispering Deaths and all that, so... I don't know. Make out of that what you will. 🤷♂️
And thus, my final candidate is a fanon one of my own concoction:
Fishlegs Ingerman.
I had just posted some posts concerning this (see here and here), but Fishlegs after the "The Return of Thor Bonecrusher" would've been the perfect candidate for Alvin. He saved his (Alvin's) life and is very intelligent and strong as an individual. If Fishlegs decided that Berk wasn't the place for him and yearned to do something more or to continue doing something adventurous, joining the Incasts-nee-Outcasts as Alvin's chief subordinate — even heir — and gaining fame and achievements and honor for himself. Personally, I'm really liking this headcanon-cum-theory. 😁
Of heck, it could even be some random character who we aren't aware of. Or even a child or young man that washed up on shore who Alvin had taken under his wing. The sky's the limit!
So in conclusion, there are several candidates who have the potential of being Alvin's chief subordinate. As to who, I'll leave that up to you. Let me know what you guys think. I'd love to see your thoughts on this.
