Swim downhill - many swimmers waste energy trying to stay on top of the water, driving them uphill, into extension, and increased drag. In backstroke, keep your head back, chest, hips, and feet up. The mobility of our thoracic spine is essential for our upper body to perform and move properly. Coach Josh demos for us how we can work on our thoracic mobility with a simple movement using a med ball and a wall to help guide you into the correct movement. Thanks Josh great idea/demo!⠀ ⠀ Demo By: @getchimpy⠀ ⠀ The most effective drill I've used for upper spine rotation . Prerequisite for rotation are flexion and extension. Move towards developing better awareness of and mobility through flexion and extension, use those segmental Cat/Cows⠀ 🐅🦏⠀ Then put a great drill like this on top of that foundational awareness to bridge the gap by adding segmental rotation⠀ 🐍⠀ Keep the hip bones facing the wall⠀ 👐🏼⠀ Keep the ribs down, unless you're aware and purposefully going for more than just thoracic⠀ ⠀ Don't be fooled by just moving the arms away from the wall - turn the upper spine which will move the ball away from the wall⠀ 🙆🏽⠀ I like to push into the wall for 2-3 seconds than lift off for 2-3 seconds as 1 rep - 8-10 reps in a set . Assesing Thoracic Rotation - Have the athlete stand or sit and reach with her left arm anterior, contra lateral, and slightly inferior (across the body and slightly down) as shown. Observe the thoracic spine to see if it rotates. With proper movement each vertebrae will rotate in succession, starting from the top. If there are any kinks in the T spine, you will notice an area where the movement is limited.
