- White European is a thing. When you fill out a form, under ethnicity, there are several options for white; white British, white European, white other. Because people make that distinction

- There are Europeans who don’t class their ethnicity as their skin colour, but as their nationality. I have family who don’t think of themselves as white, they just think of themselves as Italian and don’t really give much thought to their skin colour

- People here in Britain always question if darker skinned white Europeans are ‘actually white’. I get it a lot myself. My response is always ‘well I’m not anything else, so obviously I must be’

- Despite being white, a lot of Europeans from Italy, Greece, Spain etc, don’t feel white in the traditional sense. We’re not white like white British people. We’re not white like white Americans. We’re our own white. White British is one thing. White Italian is another thing. White Greek is another, etc

- Which is why we have this notion here in Europe of ‘nationality over race’. Being white isn’t as important as where you’re from

- So this really only becomes an issue if you’re an immigrant

- So being white in Europe doesn’t save you from racial discrimination, because sure, you’re technically white, but you’re not white white. Not the right white

- Here in England, Europeans with really blatantly foreign names, such as myself, find it more difficult to get job interviews, because they take one look at our name and don’t bother reading the rest of the CV. A guy I know was actually told by his boss to reduce the pile of CVs he had by ‘chucking away any with a name you can’t fucking pronounce’

- And then even when you do get an interview, half the time you walk into the joint several shades darker than everyone else and feel like you’ve walked into the ‘Swedish supermodel’ clubhouse and you just know you’re not getting hired

This is all basic stuff and it’s very much taken for granted here. Race and ethnicity are not as clear cut, so it can be very confusing for non-Europeans to wrap their heads around. Which is fine. But I implore you to stay in your lane, because when you say things like ‘no white person anywhere in the world ever knows what it’s like to face racial discrimination’, it’s really fucking offensive to all of the European immigrants who are denied jobs, harassed by the police and beaten by racists, because foreign is foreign to these people, and they don’t give a shit if you’re technically white. So when you mean white American, say white American.

I really love this post bc it touches on stuff that isn’t as obvious or understandable to someone who doesn’t live in Europe. Europe being “the old continent” is jam packed with countries and nationalities that have a long long and often difficult history and it shows today thru how we put nationality over race because not every white is equally white depending on where you’re from. Polish white isn’t the same as swedish white or italian white and people here are very bound to their national culture and all the prejudices associated with it. To an outsider polish, russian and ukrainian people might look all the same as in the same type of white but man even tho we share history we aren’t the same and there is a lot of beef here due to our historical background. So even if some people sprung out of the same ethnicity group it doesn’t really matter in Europe where nationality is the main factor of relationships between people. British people hate on polish people, polish people hate on russians, lithuanians are iffy about poles bc we wanted to snatch Wilno from them, polish people are iffy about everyone else in return bc almost every country in history wanted to come and fuck us over and people near the German border are especially iffy about Germans but also some of them feel actually more German than Polish because some of our lands used to be German before war, some lands are even more historically german than polish like pomerania & Gdańsk which is currently within polish borders and is also my birth place. I look like your typical slavic person yet it’s not like I would be welcome everywhere in Europe and I wouldn’t ever experience discrimination just bc in america I would be simply “white”. I have a weird lithuanian surname and even tho I believe my english has no polish/eastern accent in it, there’s a big chance someone somewhere would be offended at me being polish just because. Just something that’s been on my mind. Tumblr has this specific way of handling communities. These are just the ones that come by on my dash, I’m sure there are plenty more examples.

First they start out nice, tolerant, willing to listen and learn.

But they quickly become too nice and tolerant. Rather than simply accepting group X, they begin to overglorify them. They make them into something more special than people outside of group X, and coupled with their compulsive need to belong and feel special, desire to be a part of it too.

In comes the appropriation. If they can’t be a part of it, they’ll make themselves a part of it, one way or another. And is someone in group X not acting the way their fantasy version of them acts? Call them out on it!

They become so fanatical that they begin to talk over, or drive out the original people of group X.

And then finally they manage to become so hateful, their initial tolerance has turned into cold, terrifying intolerance. Calling gay/trans men privileged over white straight cis women, telling transsexual people to die, purposefully triggering people they dislike into panic attacks, defending Muslims to the point of calling the attack on Charlie Hebdo justified. And sending death threats to anyone who dares to disagree.

Being excluded from a group or community because you don’t belong there is not oppression.

It simply means that group does not describe or fit you as an individual.

If you can’t accept that, you have far deeper issues than your imagined ‘oppression’.
