A lot of you on here sure don’t like the idea of making any kind of sacrifice for the benefit of others huh
Some of you act like doing minor inconvenient acts of kindness is equivalent to donating a kidney as if it’s not those acts that form our communities and make the world go around.
Return your grocery cart. If you’re able-bodied offer your seat to someone who is not. Help your friend move. Drive your sister to the airport. Make sure drunk people have a safe ride or walk home. Pet-sit for your coworker. Participate in a meal train. Volunteer in your area. That’s what friendship and community is about.
someone in the UK threw eggs at Charles and was arrested and has been banned from openly carrying eggs in public and has since been sent death threats but their statement on the matter was so fucking good
also let's take a moment to appreciate the picture of this man being arrested
"So my bail conditions were, between my arrest and my trial, were that I wasn't allowed to carry eggs in public." host laughs "Yeah, I know, and so that is in itself like so absurd that it's like right" Host: "I gotta know, is there like a provision for if you're going home from the store? Or are you just, are you just egg-less?" "So the copper who was literally just like making this up at the station says like 'Ok, so your bail condition is: you're not allowed within 500 meters of the king; you're not allowed to carry eggs in public' and then he goes like 'ah actually, like, what 'appens if he wants to buy some eggs?' Ok, so they changed it so it's like, 'You're allowed to carry eggs as long as you're going home from the shops and you've got the receipt" host laughs "And I think, that was more viral than me actually doing it, you know what I mean like, people were like, that's Britain for you, have you got a license for those eggs"

seeing all the 14-17 y/o queer kids who don’t know what v for vendetta is…. u mean the blockbuster film written by two trans women about a masked vigilante who decides to singlehandedly take down a fascist alternate version of england set in the distant year of 2020… and his driving force was getting justice for a lesbian who he never met but whose diary he found, who was separated from her wife before being killed by said fascist gov…. and it stars natalie portman…. okay
the movie is great, with amazing acting:
and the original graphic novel is phenomenal:
I highly recommend them both
and they’ve never been more relevant
“People shouldn’t be afraid of their government. Governments should be afraid of their people.”
There’s strong subtext that V is a trans man and A)the lesbian from the diary or B)her wife.
frankly I prefer the movie over the comic, for three reasons:
1) lewis prothero as a rush limbaugh/glenn beck/bill o’reilly type is both more applicable and way funnier than a 1940s radio propagandist
2) it has stephen fry as gordon detriech, and makes him explicitly gay and pretending to be attracted to evey as part of being closeted than actually attracted to evey and having sex with her while she hides in his home.
3) the movie came out in 2005; that is, only four years after 9/11, while the Iraq war was still in full swing, and while xenophobia and Islamophobia were not just acceptable, but tacitly encouraged by the administration at the time. which makes the following exchange even more poignant and sweet:
Evey: [seeing a book in a glass display case] What is that? Gordon: It’s a copy of the Qur’an, 14th century. Evey: [shocked] Are you a Muslim? Gordon: No, I’m in television. Evey: But why would you keep it? Gordon: I don’t have to be a Muslim to find the images beautiful or its poetry moving.
just… the easy acceptance of it. the idea that a religion that he doesn’t believe in and that has been explicitly outlawed in-universe is a source of beauty. I’m not Muslim, either, but that particular moment really stuck with me emotionally.
Love this movie
“…I remember how different became dangerous. I still don’t understand it, why they hate us so much. They took Ruth while she was out buying food. I’ve never cried so hard in my life. It wasn’t long till they came for me.
It seems strange that my life should end in such a terrible place, but for three years, I had roses, and apologize to no one.
I shall die here. Every inch of me shall perish. Every inch, but one. An Inch, it is small and it is fragile, but it is the only thing in the world worth having. We must never lose it or give it away. We must never let them take it from us.
I hope that whoever you are, you escape this place. I hope that the world turns and that things get better. But what I hope most of all is that you understand what I mean when I tell you that even though I do not know you, and even though I may never meet you, laugh with you, cry with you, or kiss you. I love you. With all my heart, I love you. -Valerie”
SOBBING
Thi movie changed me so much. So so much.
Honestly V’s acting is some of the most top notch stuff I’ve ever seen.
“No, what you have are bullets, and the hope that when your guns are empty I am no longer standing, because if I am—you’ll all be dead before you’ve reloaded.”
The film (which I saw in the theater opening night) was EXPLICITLY made as rebellious pushback against the political environment in the US post 9/11. All of the evil politicians in the film INTENTIONALLY look like US right wing political figures, including Bush, Cheney, and Rush Limbaugh.
It’s not, like, subtle, if you were there at the time. Especially if you compare it to the original novel. (I also prefer the film because it gets rid of the weird sexism.)
However I have to say Natalie Portman’s accent in that movie annoys the fuck outta me. It’s not great. BUT Hugo Weaving is magnificent.
It’s very unfortunate that it’s major cultural impact was through a series of unlikely turns, getting the Guy Fawkes mask adopted as an alt-right symbol. Because like the Matrix, right wing people SUCK at picking up on films themes.
I’ve also seen a lot of people shitting on the movie’s end because you see people who’ve died during the course of the film. They apparently entirely missed the “you can’t kill an idea” thing, because that shot is explicitly about that line; the idea that though the bodies may have fallen, the intentions continue.
Having both seen the movie and read the graphic novel, I recommend both, but I also recommend watching the movie first. There are some expanded themes in the novel that didn’t make it onto the screen, and they’re technically about two different kinds of fascism (yes, there’s more than one kind). The movie could practically be titled Do Not Invent The MAGA Movement, while the novel is explicitly a reaction to Thatcherism in the UK.
Just, um. Don’t read literally anything Alan Moore says about either one. That man is so high on sniffing his own farts it’s long since passed funny and even annoying and fallen into the realm of downright tiring.
“why do you ship them? I thought the ship wasn’t canon?” bro we’re talking about fictional characters, who don’t actually exist in real life, from a media that focuses solely on fictional events that are not real either. so what if these two made-up characters didn’t kiss in their source material? they have lots of nasty gay sex on archive of our own and thousands of novel length slow burn enemies to lovers fics written about them. the fanon content at this point far exceeds the whole canonical franchise. the problem isn’t “it’s not canon” the problem is that you don’t allow yourself to let go of canon and enjoy the wonder of fan contents that are just as good / valid
& you know what it actually IS lifechanging to smile at strangers & say please & thank you & goodmorning & compliment someones outfit & help someone in need & be more accepting of loving other people just because they are other people!!!
"That happens to everyone"
Dear able bodied people, When I talk to you about a symptom I am having that is related to my chronic illness, please do not respond to me by saying “that happens to me sometimes” or “that happens to everyone”.
Because no, not everyone has a chronic illness. When you say “that happens to everyone” it invalidates my disability, it erases my identity. When you say that, suddenly everyone becomes disabled. And if everyone’s disabled… Then disability doesn’t really exist because there wouldn’t be any able bodied people to distinguish us from. It erases the validity of our chronic illness, and it erases our disability.
When someone says “that happens to everyone” they’re actually saying “you’re not disabled. Stop faking it”.
So don’t say it.
If you genuinely relate to something a person is saying about their illness or disability, if you frequently feel over fatigued or you get regular dizzy spells or you experience a lot of pain or something of that nature, talk to a doctor. Because those AREN’T things that everyone experiences but sometimes it’s very hard to not tell yourself that your experiences are the norm, especially when you’ve never really talked to anyone about them.
I know I’m never on, but I encourage all of you to watch and share this video as much as possible. This is an Australian reporter covering the LA protests. You can see, on camera, the cop turn and purposely aim at her before firing. This narrative that it’s all the protestors is a clear lie.
Also I can't emphasize enough what a big fuckup this was for perception in Australia. This was a reporter for their equivalent of Fox News, and she was live when it happened. So they're trying to say she was caught in the crossfire now but even the Australian conservatives aren't buying it.
Ok, so just a correction of the above for non-Australians... Channel 9 is NOT the equivalent of Fox news.
They certainly aren't left leaning by any stretch, and they are conservative, but they are a generally reputable news source watched by the majority of Australian's not just conservatives.
I don't know what the heck the previous poster is talking about.
But yeah, Aussies are pissed and all our news sources are replaying the video, sometimes without any kind of commentary beyond a line saying what the video is of... cos its a live video of American police shooting an Aussie reporter for doing her job.
Also notice how it's the protestors who immediately jump in to be sure she's all right.
What I will never understand as long as I live is that political beliefs about Israel or the war aside, is the truly alarming amount of people who have been able to set their humanity entirely aside and look at a people mourning the rape and massacre of over a thousand of their brethren - unspeakably evil acts committed against them less than a century after they were nearly wiped out entirely - and laugh and joke and mock and dismiss the trauma and pain and grief as something to be suspicious of.
Ordinary people, celebrities, politicians, activists - compassion and empathy for the grief of fellow human beings completely absent.
Be angry and appalled at the level of human suffering in Gaza - it is horrendous and unimaginable. Talk about the necessity for a ceasefire/peace deal without forgetting about the necessity of returning the 56 remaining hostages to their homes and families, either for burial or healing.
It isn’t a competition. You don’t have to denigrate the pain and suffering of one people in order to advocate for the other and you have lost what it means to be human if you do.
the only crusade I care about is the crusade for trans rights!!!
Thinking about Lilo & Stitch makes me really appreciate certain things about the original + the series. Almost every single named [human] character in the movie isn’t white: the only exception being Mertle, y’know, the bratty little girl we’re not supposed to like.
Besides all of the racial representation, Lilo herself is very much a neurodivergent icon, and her portrayal as the protagonist is amazing considering how characters like her are typically either sidelined or depicted in ways to make them less sympathetic/human (modern media does at least a slightly better job at adressing that kind of thing tho).
So all of that is great, but to anyone that hasn’t seen Lilo & Stitch: The Series, it also does some extremely refreshing stuff.
Pleakley gets tons of validation to dress in drag, everyone always referring to Pleakley as “she” when dressed up as “aunt Pleakley.” There’s even an episode that tackles Pleakley dealing with the pressures of his family that wants him to marry a girl and settle down to have a “normal life.” After the episode's shenanigans, there's a realistic depiction of the misunderstanding of a heteronormative/traditional parent with their non-traditional child: Pleakley's mom says that she just wants her children to be happy, but when Pleakley says that he is happy, she thinks he's only trying to console her as she insists, "How can you be happy? You aren't even married." But Pleakley finally gets it through to his mom when he says, "I don't want to be married, mother! I'm happy just as I am."
After getting to meet all of Pleakley's ohana throughout the episode and hearing from Pleakley himself -after all of the previous misunderstandings- that he really, truly, is happy, she's finally starting to understand.
Even though his mom comments as they leave that she wants him to “try wearing men’s clothes more often,” she still does walk away accepting that she simply doesn’t understand her son's way of thinking. It’ll definitely be hard for her since she’s so much more “traditional,” but she’s finally coming to grips with the fact that her son is who he is, and likes being that way, so she’ll love him regardless. She's trying her best.
The portrayal of people with physical disabilities is also great. It’s not because there’s one recurring character with some condition, but almost because there are non-recurring characters. It isn’t in every episode, but here’s an example: they want to show someone at the park playing fetch with their dog for just one shot. They could very easily have it be any a random person, but they decided to make it a lady in a wheelchair. There's another episode where Nani's friends from highschool show up and one has forearm crutches, but not just because she had some recent accident. No one in the episode questions her condition or feels the need to point it out, the only comment on it being that the friend will use the crutches to lightly bonk the others' arms, and Nani jokes, "You are still deadly with that thing."
The fact that they include characters with disabilities when they "don't have to" makes it that much more normal. These people aren't some special case or the main highlight of the episode, they're just another person. They're normal.
There's so much that all of the original Lilo & Stitch media did right, but now the name will forever be tainted with the association of the remake, which I'm sure will have absolutely none of the tasteful writing and ideas of anything prior to it.
"We're living through the ongoing fascist collapse of the United States but I still gotta clean the kitchen and go to work tomorrow" sure is the mood right now, huh.
Okay, had some thoughts, slept on it, had more thoughts. Woke up this morning and there are some (understandably) very worried folks in my notes/DMs, asking if this is the End end. As ever, I am but an old gay academic on the internet. My opinion is not more special or more insightful than anyone else's. But if you want my thoughts, here they are.
First: the U.S. isn't in the "imminent" or "approaching" stages of fascism. At least as far as the president and the ruling junta are concerned, and in regard to what they're trying to do, this is full-out, blood-and-soil, grab-people-off-the-streets-to-send-to-concentration-camps-without-trial fascism. The reason they have not been able to do everything they planned is due to a) considerable and vigorous resistance from multiple levels of American society, and b) federal judges. Everyone say Thank You, Federal Judges. They are the only thing keeping the Turd Reich in check right now, because the GOP-controlled Congress is waving handkerchiefs and cheering all the way. If Trump and the withered skinsuit of white supremacist evil known as Stephen Miller were able to do what they wanted with genuinely no interference from the courts, this would be unspeakably bad. And y'know. It's already bad.
I am not here to tell anyone to Pollyanna it out or just think happy thoughts or whatever else. This is very bad. We have to acknowledge the badness of it and to understand that this is what happens when you voluntarily give power back to a miserable reactionary fascist regime that repeatedly announced its intentions to do exactly this. Except too many Americans went "lol that's funny he's such a joker" and voted for him anyway. I'm very curious how the Both Parties Are The Same crowd would like to explain the fact that literally none of this was happening at the same time last year, when Democrats still held the White House and Senate, but that's another post and I'm tired of arguing with their anti-reality doomster Horseshoe Theory vortex of stupidity. So. Moving along. It's done now, it happened. What next?
Here's the important thing which you have to understand: this hysterical overreaction -- National Guard, trampling on state sovereignty, Marines in the streets, declaring open war on LA and wherever else the ICE Gestapo is being sent -- is not a sign of strength. It is a sign of a weak, failing, and flailing psychopathic old dementia patient who has realized that destroying American democracy on behalf of his Kremlin paymasters and alt-right tech bros (though too bad, so sad, #Trumpsk ended in Pride Month!) is going to be a hell of a lot harder than he thought. Trump just spent the week getting mocked, ridiculed, emasculated, and made to look weak and stupid. Musk turned on him and blew up the Big Beautiful Bill, which was already having a hard time in the Senate. Judges are almost automatically ruling against him at this point. He was even forced to bring Kilmar Abrego Garcia back to the US from the Salvadoran gulag and get Fascist Barbie Bondi to concoct some other BS charges to try him on. The point is, TACO. Trump Always Chickens Out. He is weak, he's failing, people keep fighting him and winning, he just got major-league embarrassed by his Ex Bestie, and his stupid budget bill just got a lot harder to pass. So what do you do, if you're Donald Trump? You lash out at your favorite target, That Dadgum Gay Liberal Commie Immigrant Refuge, California.
This is what fascists do when cornered, thwarted, and made to look stupid: they try to do the only thing they can do, which is an overwhelming show of brute force. Please remember that this is also happening because said withered skinsuit of white supremacist evil, Stephen Miller, is upset that they haven't managed to "cleanse" the country of every single immigrant yet. It is also openly admitted by Orange Hitler's Favorite Special Little Boy that a big part of their plan is to cause enough terror to force immigrants to self-deport, or just voluntarily pack up and leave because they think this well-oiled terror machine will come for them next. Now. Listen. I have zero, ZERO right to tell any non-citizen living in the US right now what to do or how to feel. If you just want to get out before you do have to risk going through that, it is completely and utterly valid.
However.
This is your home too. You belong here. If you decide that if they want you out, they'll have to fight you the whole way, then you could and should do that. Those of us who are U.S. citizens have a right to stand up with you, not least since the Turd Reich is already musing about finding ways to do the same things to us. Nobody is safe. This is way past the "first they came for" lines of the poem; they want to get everyone if they can, for the tiniest and most minute infractions against Donald of House Putin, First Of His Name. See above: we're in the full-blown fascism stage. I am not minimizing or ignoring that.
But still.
If you do the usual Doomer Leftist Edgelord Internet Thing and go "lol well guess Trump is a dictator for life now and there will be no more elections and we live in Gilead forever," often with barely-disguised glee that at least those stupid liberals are getting punished, you're, well, also a fascist. You're accepting and glorifying fascist narratives, you're exalting fascist power, you are once more making the fascists look cool and inevitable and like there's no point at all in fighting. Nota Bene: This does not refer to the people who are genuinely terrified and despairing and thinking that this is in fact the end and there's no more point in fighting. You're scared. I'm scared too. I see that and I feel it and I know, I know, I know. But you can still control what you say and how you react and the messages that you spread in response. If you're just reblogging a lot of unsourced screenshots and panic-mongering posts: maybe don't do that. Think about what you're putting out there and how you're reacting. If you don't feel like you can do that, get off the internet, stop looking at the news (which also has a vested interest in making everything look apocalyptic) and take a breath. It will still be there tomorrow.
At times like these, all we can do is hold onto each other and take some comfort in the fact that time still creeps in a petty pace from day to day. The Terrible Future still will not happen all at once and in a giant blob of awful and with no chance to change it. Nothing is predetermined and nothing is inevitable. Everything will still happen one day at a time, and that means we have to use the time as best we can. If you feel like this is in fact the End for you and you need to get out, well, go ahead and make those preparations if you can. But also recognize that everyone is in fight-or-flight mode right now, that is a screaming panic response, and while you shouldn't downplay the danger, you also shouldn't up and run because your scared animal brain thinks that is the only thing left to do. We are still here. You are still here. I am still here. We can still do something as we choose.
I hate the fact that we have to quote Gandalf like, all the goddamn time right now, but it's still true. All you have to do is choose what to do with the time that is given to you, etc. You still have a life. You still have a choice. You still have time. It is not done, it is not the end, and goodness knows the world isn't over now because Donald Trump got mad again and threw a hissy fit because he had a really sucky week and got publicly dumped by Elon Fucking Musk (again, lololololol). Things are very bad, but the point of my original post above was that even when you're living through an awful historical event (yet again, I hate this timeline), ordinary life still goes on. You have to focus on what you control and do what you can with it. It's not about hope so much as confounded stubbornness. If those idiot weaksauce fascist losers want to get you, make it as hard as fucking possible for them, and part of that IS just refusing to accept that they have that power, or any power. You can think whatever you want, but if you just say out loud, "Fuck you. This is stupid. You are going to fail because you're failures and you can't make me afraid," weirdly, it really does help.
Hugs.
The other thing to remember is this: fascism always fails.
It takes a long time coming and usually a relatively short time collapsing. Why?
Because fascist regimes prioritize loyalty in their underlings and members of their government. They do NOT prize things like...um, competence, and knowing how to do things. Of this we have daily proof.
When all you care about is whether the people who work for you kiss the ring or not, the systems that you barely knew you relied on tend to get majorly fucked up because nobody is qualified to run anything and nobody knows what the fuck they're doing. Again, we have daily proof of this.
There can and will be damage done. It may last less or more time than we think. What comes after may not be all THAT much better, not at first. I'm not saying "it gets better" here but...usually, it does.
Also?
I was in that "well, this is it" stage last night.
So I ate some ice cream and had some water and slept.
And this morning I woke up ready to fuck up Trump again.
LET YOURSELF BREATHE. Sometimes it feels like a lot. It IS a lot.
Just don't get stuck there. Breathe and come back.
This is part of my blocklist.
Take a look at how many users named "Amal" are on here, and keep in mind I use my block button pretty liberally.
Now know I found at least three other recent "Amal" accounts on my blocklist.
EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM has sent me this:
I'm willing to bet you recognize it. It's pretty distinctive.
If that's not proof positive of a scam farm, I don't know what is. Seven accounts in the span of two weeks? Three of them in only two days? If she was a real person with a child in the hospital (who's been there for like six months, for the record, I've been getting this one for a LONG time--how would she have the time? For that matter, why have so many instead of keeping a progress record on a single account?
With the news that the Israeli government has in fact decided to move toward ethnic cleansing in Gaza, real actual Gazans who are not scam bots need real actual help. If you want to help, your money would be better sent to Anera, the International Rescue Committee, or E-Sims for Gaza.
Fuck the bots.
like, four of these are literally the exact same blogs. same icon, same posts, just slightly differing names. but the names are still basically the same.
But they're totally legit /s
The fact that you have, what is that? Four? AND THEY'RE ALL DIFFERENT NAMES FROM MY OWN SCREENSHOT should say a lot.
Links for the above mentioned aid organizations:

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their liv
Adding to this as I also got exactly this ask yesterday. I remembered this post and that there are apparently multiple accounts.
So I copied one paragraph of text and pasted it into tumblr search. I thought I might find a handful or maybe two of these blogs but instead this led me into the rabbit hole of finding 200+ (yes more than two hundred) blogs who sent that same ask, over the span of several months. Seems a bit uncommon to ask for *urgent* medical care for the same injury over this long time.
I'll put just these 2 screenshots here to show there are so many of them using variations of amal or amal-alkfarna as usernames.
Just to add a reminder to this:
Even if these weren’t obvious scam farms, when it comes to large scale humanitarian crises, your money will go so much further if you donate to a legitimate organization.
Most of us can’t afford to donate a lot and organizations like Anera and the IRC can stretch someone’s small donation so much further than a random person who, because of the crisis they’re in the middle of, probably doesn’t have access to the supplies that they would need the money for or if they do have access, can’t afford them even with donations because of other people profiteering.
You're transported into the last movie or TV show you watched. Could you survive whatever canon-typical whump happens there?
Yes
No
