Tos spuhra... my beloved...
I'm a fellow Spuhura shipper, but I want to respond to this tag:
I disagree that the ship was forced (I assume we're talking about the AOS iteration), considering that the relationship was already established in the 2009 reboot (yes, the film did somewhat fail to *explicitly* show that, although the were hints in dialogue well before the turbolift scene). Academy- era novels set before the film, however, show a buildup to the relationship and give more insight into it. The novelization of the film might also show more than the film itself (I haven't yet read that novel).
i feel like a lot of fandoms pride themselves on being gayer than the source material but have they considered being less racist and less misogynistic than the source material as well . could be revolutionary
Yep.
āI donāt ship her with him because I ship her with [insert character]ā and then you go to their page and they never talk about that ship
āI donāt ship her with him because I ship her with myselfā and then you go to their page and they never talk about her in a positive light
āI donāt ship him because she deserves betterā mind you the person they are shipping with her canon partner is typically their fave character
So itās like you donāt ship girlie with character a cuz she deserves so much better but you ship character b -youāre fave character- with character a?????
āHer canon partner is toxic/abusiveā so why ship him with another person??? Especially when again the person your shipping him with is usually your fave character???
āShe needs to be freed from the constraints of that relationshipā then why not apply that same belief to her canon male partner????
Also āconstraintsā like sheās in prison, she makes the active choice to be with him and is very happy with him
āShe needs be to independentā mind you this is a character that will have multiple independence arcs, or the story and writing will show that she is an independent person in and out of the relationship, and even sometimes one of the problems in the relationship will be that she is too independent and needs to let ppl/him help her
Also woman can be independent while in a relationship and again why not apply that same logic to himmmm?
āI donāt hate her, I just never talk about (positivity) because she has bad writingā and then will make a whole fucking fandom of a guy who showed up once and had a total of 13 words
And most of the time that statement is just a plain lie and all of the ābad writingā she has is from all those fanfics they read that theyāre confusing with canon
I need you guys to just start saying with your entire chest that you hate this girl cuz she gets in the way of your mlm ship
*looks at the Star Trek (Spirk) fandom*
Response
Apparently my post about my personal hopes for STXIII pissed a lot of people off who called me pathetic, assumed I was white (I am, but REALLY?!), assumed I was a straight girl, assumed I was racist, assumed all I cared about was 2 guys going for each other and that me saying a woman can stand on her own was the same as me saying that a woman should be alone and friendless.
Just WOW. I guess I had assumed that the Trek fandom would be more, I donāt know, nicer about someoneās thoughts. Iām kind of shell-shocked by the sheer amount of hate and assumption thrown my way.
For the record, I do like the reboot movies and I was not intending to bash Uhura. She is a beautiful and strong character and if you ship her with Spock, thatās fine. I just donāt personally see it and I am allowed to express that.
Was I a little careless in my post to imply that Spock and Uhuraās relationship was founded off sexism? Possibly, and I apologize for that. I do think that the relationship was founded off the need to establish Spock as a cool, likable heterosexual man, rather than a sincere romantic connection between the two. There is definitely a love there, just not what I see as romantic. I also donāt quite understand how my desire for more diversity, combined with my personal feelings about Uhura/Spock was taken as racism. I see Uhura as having more value than being the black woman dating an alien man.
Most of the negativity I have received has been from people who are borderline homophobic, making all sorts of assumptions, because I ship Spirk. TO BE CLEAR: I NEVER SPECIFIED THAT I WANTED SPOCK AND KIRK TO BE TOGETHER. Yes, that would be nice for my own personal reasons, but seriously, I just want to see another Vulcan mind meld between two close friends.Ā
And as much as I love the reboots, their is a lack of diversity, compared with diversity represented in TOS in the 1960ā²s. Also, I donāt think it is too much for me to ask for more representation of women, particularly women who are single and happy that way. Sulu, Checkov, Scotty, and Keenster are all presented as single guys, but apparently if I imply that a woman could be as well, I want to doom her to loneliness for the rest of her life. Also, people have said some snide remarks about me trying to just populate ST with my little gay fantasies, which is pretty upsetting because the last thing I want to do is turn every single ST character gay. I just want there to actually be some representation, rather than none at all. It doesnāt have to be Spock and Kirk. It could be anyone. And this is something that has nothing to do with fandom. I actually want there to be more non-cis and/or non-hetero people in movies everywhere. If you think thatās gross or shocking, you obviously have more issues than a simple fandom disagreement.Ā
I do apologize if anyone was offended, especially in regards to Spock and Uhura, because that is a beautiful connection right there. However this is my blog, and I would hope that I could express my own opinions without getting such hate-fueled and frankly, mean, responses (some arguments were more logical, but some, sadly, were not). Iām truly sorry if your feelings about your personal OTP was hurt, because that was not my intention and Iām really not into causing anyone pain.
At this point, I feel like If I apologize any more, Iām going to be apologizing for my own harmless non-canonical beliefs, and that just feels ridiculous and degrading. I will delete my original post, as I donāt want to be seen contributing to any Spock/Uhura hate, but I ask that in the future, my personal opinion be respected, or at least tolerated without people implying that Iām racist, heterophobic, and sexist.Ā
I know this post is very old, and I might come off as blunt, but heterophobia isn't real. It's definitely not a thing that fans argue for. Meanwhile, misogynoir runs rampant, and the fandom at large needs to educate itself on misogynoiristic tropes.
Also, many Spock/Uhura shippers are queer themselves.

have u guys noticed the phenomenon that's like
- m/f ship between a nonblack man & a Black woman
- it's either canon (e.g. mel/jayce arcane) or entirely plausible (e.g. prism or coupƩ/robert dispatch)
- fanbase overwhelmingly pairs nb man off with another nb man and disengages from the Black woman character, shunting her into a background wise & sassy caretaker role (for which there is a name) or leaving her out of fanworks entirely
- fans who do this ^ claim it is an expression of love and admiration for the Black woman character, actually, bc the nb man (who may be her canonical partner) "can't handle all that" (he may be perfectly competent and engaged; she may be totally low maintenance; it has no bearing), she's just too wonderful (too much) and out of his league (lacking in flaws and interiority and fan appeal)
have we all observed this and can we see the multiple dimensions in which it is racist āļø i'm not bringing it up to make any beautiful fujos feel bad abt shipping this or that, just to ask for some consideration of what ppl are saying abt Black women when they make their excuses to each other. like you can just not make the excuses. yk?

white ppl will steal every aesthetic from black culture and then call it something so stupid like bo derek braids instead of box braids or hasbin hotel core instead of black southern dandism. yall will bend over backwards to call my culture barbaric/scary just to drool over the aesthetic the moment no actual black people are involved (21 pilots vs actual reggae). i have a billion other criticisms about star trek aos but the one thing i'll never forgive them for is taking away uhura's whimsy. tos uhura has such a bright & joyful presence she is kind and funny and artistic and cares about her looks WHILE ALSO being smart and badass and not afraid to speak her mind (especially in the movies. i love her). aos uhura is reduced to a one-dimensional #girlboss who takes no shit from anyone yet somehow lacks enough self-respect to stay in a boring & unsatisfying relationship with a man who is so obviously not attracted to women
If you think TOS Uhura is more empowering and progressive than AOS Uhura, then you clearly don't realize the literal racism Nichelle Nichols herself faced and the fact she nearly quit because of it. And she could not speak up; AOS Uhura speaks up for herself. She is so much more than you realize, and it's sad that you (fandom) continue to downplay her.
Nichelle Nichols herself gave her guidance, AND her seal of approval.
She's not "armcandy", she's a fucking xenolinguistic genius, Chief Comms Officer, and member of the damn bridge crew. She speaks about honour to a squad of Klingons in their language; meanwhile, a TOS film has Uhura fumbling through a book in order to speak Klingon (I believe reading that Nichelle despised that scene).
And TOS could have given us Spock x Uhura with the literal chemistry they had (the actors themselves had mentioned this). Nichelle herself said that it could have been explored if TOS had another season.
Not to mention some of you in the reblogs seem to be delving into some pretty misogynoiristic tropes. I will forever rage at the fandom and it's horrible treatment of AOS Uhura. She deserves so much better.
I'm fucking tired of this shit, seriously.
It's crystal-clear from the notes that people have no idea how Black feminism works, and in turn force their white feminism onto Uhura, and without a though about what an actual Black woman has to say. Here's a quote from the one and only Nichelle Nichols:
āWhile they were shooting, J.J. Abrams invited me to lunch and invited me to come to the set. I was so excited. The surprise he had going was that the young woman playing Uhura [Zoe Saldana] didnāt know I was coming. She just gasped.
As J.J. had planned it, she didnāt have to shoot, so we sat for two hours and talked, and it was as though I had known her all her life. I was so honored. I thought I was seeing myself ā I knew I was in good hands. She just picked my brain.
When I see her come on, thatās me and Iām living it. A little ways into the movie, I realized she had taken to heart what I said and became more reserved and tighter. Iām so proud of her. She took a role that was established and gave it life.
Now I know who I was before I got on that ship for that first mission. Itās so exciting for me and rewarding. J.J. and she did me honor.āĀ

Nichelle loved the reboot version of her character, and what Zoe added to the role. Check yourselves, and your misogynoir.
To the white people jumping on the "I'm becoming Chinese" trend, just becos you are boiling and drinking hot water, wearing house slippers, eating Chinese food, and wearing Chinese clothes, these things don't make you Chinese. You are a fucking tourist and a vulture.
And please stop distorting and revising the term, "cultural appropriation", so that yall can feel better about yourselves flattening and commodifying non-white cultures. It's not cultural appreciation becos we know that one day, "becoming Chinese" will no longer be fun and novel, so yall will just dump it and move on to the next racist trend.
And lastly, to white people:
Great video on this by Emma Chang-Kredl, please check their youtube channel out!
- mod sodapop
I also wish white people will stop claiming that they aren't orientalist becos they "hold a great appreciation for the Chinese people" and then in the next breath, talking about China and Chinese people as we are Atlantis or Wakanda. This mysterious nation with secrets hidden from Westerners' eyes just now coming into the light š As if yall have never met a member of the Chinese diaspora in your life or saw a globe.
And to the Chinese people, those living in the West and those still living in Asia, who think this trend is "wholesome" (to quote a Chinese Singaporean content creator, I know we still have post colonial hangover here), where is your dignity? Where is your self-respect? Why are yall so desperate for white approval of our culture and way of life?? Frankly, it's fucking embarrassing.
Like it was not too long ago that white people were accusing us of creating covid, accusing us of eating dogs and bats, harassing Chinese restaurant owners, and beating us up in the streets. And now they want to be Chinese, have yall forgotten this??
And will these white people actually talk about the Chinese people being kidnapped and killed by ICE?? They want to only take the good but will they take the bad??
Pov: you are a non-black person who puts "anarchist" in their bio but you think that Black people who point out the lack of visibility that Black and Brown victims who suffer the brunt of state-sanctioned violence for centuries receive compared to recent white victims is a distraction.
Anyways instead of dismissing Black people why don't yall donate to Keith Porter's gofundme? Renee Nicole Good's gofundme hit a million dollars in a day, while Porter's family still struggle to raise a fraction of that:

Your daily reminder that Leonard Nimoy and Nichelle Nichols tried their hardest to imply Spock/Uhura despite the Hayes code not allowing interracial relationships, that Gene Roddenberry would've explored their relationship more if TOS had gotten a 4th season, and that Nichelle Nichols wrote a short story (with input from Sondra Marshak and Myrna Culbreath) for New Voyages II where Spock, Uhura, and Kirk openly-flirt with each other, Uhura kisses Spock, and implies that Spock and Kirk are sharing a bed at the end.
Here's some behind-the-scenes context + Nichelle Nichols thoughts on Spock/Uhura in both TOS and AOS.
The interracial kiss was originally going to be Spock/Uhura, but it was later given to Kirk so that tv networks couldn't use Spock being "half alien" to water down the message.
For the record, Leonard Nimoy adored Spock/Uhura's relationship in AOS. He gave Zachary Quinto indight into Spock's character and was "extremely jealous" of Quinto's role after seeing Spuhura on the big screen.
ā³ āwhat can a female character do without being criticized mercilessly?ā || [insp]
The main problem I have with AOS Uhura is that she became a teacher pet and love interest instead of a good friend and independent talent.
Ooh boyā¦
First off, sheās not a teacherās pet. Sheās a linguistics genius who worked her way through the Academy (even becoming a teaching aide).
Second, whatās so bad about her being a love interest? She never had a romance plot in the original show, and now sheās got one itās a bad thing? As another fan has stated, Uhura being single is not empowering. And I should add that Spock is her love interest.
Thirdly, she *is* a good friend, who sympathized with Kirk after Pikeās death in āInto Darknessā, who interacts with her fellow crew members (in films, novels and comics). In the comics, she confides in Kirk regarding Spockās self-harming/self-destructive behaviour.
Lastly, what you mean by āindependant talentā is ānot tied down by a romance plotāā¦which brings me back to my first point. For Uhura, a Black woman, being single is not empowering.
The point of this post flew right over your head, didnāt it?
@the-fandom-vent whatās the deal with digging up a historic post?
Audience had perspectives and grew up, deal with my old comments as harsh as u like, my opinions formed with context that i donāt recall completely today.
All i can say today - I still strongly dislike teacher/student relationship with romantic development formed under high stressed combat environment n Spockās severely traumatized state, even when they are no longer teacher/student, power imbalance still exists when Spock is XO. AOS Uhura deserves better story arc n anchor, she is talented n attractive and I donāt want to see her positioned as Spockās girlfriend to prove it.
To any unknown netizens replying my random old posts, sorry that u feel the need to defend your beloved characters or relationships, i hope that u will find something beautiful n let go of the random old negative thoughts on internet.
I donāt have the energy to review my adolescence stuff n delete things that do not fit my current views, this is my final output regarding my old posts, if u donāt like my comment, please feel free to block me.
Okay? This blog is fairly new. I created it to respond to and vent about fandom discourse. And yes, I realize the post is old.
Taking this out of the tags because I'm moody, and I keep seeing the same old tropes even now.
AOS Uhura is not reduced, and fandom needs to be less misogynoiristic towards her. Seriously.
a moment of silence for poor Nichelle Nichols and how her opinions about Uhura are constantly ignored by those who think that by hating on reboot Uhura theyāre speaking on Nichelle Nicholsā behalf.
The fandom thinks it knows best when it comes to Uhura, but no-one knows/knew the character better than she did.
Itās almost as if her voice didnāt matter. Just like in the 60s.
Even now, the fandom continues to pull this same stunt, while proclaiming to be more feminist than the reboots. If fans are so damn feminist, why don't they actually listen to or even acknowledge the input of the woman who originally portrayed Uhura? A character whom they claim to love so much, but despise the reboot iteration; whom Nichelle actually approved of:
āWhile they were shooting, J.J. Abrams invited me to lunch and invited me to come to the set. I was so excited. The surprise he had going was that the young woman playing Uhura [Zoe Saldana] didnāt know I was coming. She just gasped.
