Like honestly as someone who grew up on a farm run by a man who didn’t understand why he shouldn’t fly a confederate flag off the farmhouse (even though he was from fuckin’ MAINE), I can tell you that rural conservatives are more eager to listen to socialist ideas than you think. They’ve just been extremely conditioned to think of “socialism” as a dirty word.

If you talk to folks about how their bosses are dickheads and makin’ good friends with their neighbors to get their proper due from the boss and the government, they’ll overwhelmingly want to listen to you. 

Rural poor folks fuckin’ hate big money and big business more often than not, they’re just terrified of the word “socialism” because they’ve lived their whole lives being told that the socialists want to take their family home from them and steal all their crops that they’ve lovingly raised from seeds.

The confederate flag is literally a white supremacist symbol. The fact that this post uses it as an example of someone’s general ignorance of *socialism* yet never acknowledges the extremely specific, racist meaning of the confederate flag is incredible. A white person who flies a confederate flag is making a conscious choice to signal their agreement with white supremacist ideology, they’re not doing it because nobody has ever sat down with them and explained what socialism means using one syllable words. They might share your anger at bosses and the government, but whatever potential class consciousness they might have is never gonna extend beyond people who look just like them.

During the Freedom Summer, white laborers on the Maryland Eastern Shore were happy to ask the visiting black Student Non-Violence Coordinating Committee organizers for help unionizing one day while violently resisting their civil rights work the days before and after.

The Ghadar Party, a revolutionary movement for Indian independence, criticized the European socialist movements because even as they organized for European workers, they were still attached to imperialism and prioritized white colonial states over workers of all the world.

The historical movement against Asian people in the U.S. leading up to and following the Chinese Exclusion Act came from white labor. They wanted to protect white jobs, jobs that became white because white immigrants forced black people out of those jobs to worse ones so that they could establish themselves as better than black people. They were both nativist and socialist and these labor movements, based on the Coasts, collaborated with the US South to pass both anti-black segregationist laws and anti-asian immigration and citizenship laws.

The history of socialism in white-dominant nations is not that poor white people couldn’t be drawn into labor movements, it’s that they loved white supremacy more than anything else.
