Connor canonically can excuse and brush off so much abuse and mistreatment that it feels so wrong to me when people headcanon him as someone who 1) takes offence easily, and 2) expresses it. It would take A LOT to even get to him and even more for him to acknowledge it without deflecting it into something else instead. He's not huffy, not sensitive. Like, he'd rather tell a person Their flaws, play on their insecurities and mock them than acknowledge that their actions were hurtful and that's why he's attacking them. He might however attempt some kind of diplomacy prior to that, but even then I think he'd probably try to make it quite impersonal and distanced from his emotions.

i feel like no one really wants to hear that sleep/exercise/nutrition/hydration are major factors in treating mental health issues bc we’ve all talked to that person who thinks your depression would be cured by one good session of goat yoga or whatever but unfortunately they do help and i’m chronically annoyed about it

Lotsa people in the notes like "i can't change these habits because im too broke/depressed" which, as a formerly broke and depressed person, is patently untrue, so here's some starting points:

-hydration: carry around a water bottle. a funky metal water bottle you can put stickers on is like $10 and if you can’t afford it just chronically refill a gatorade bottle or smth. Just having water nearby will help. And hydration really, really helps with energy levels for things like...

-exercise: my advice for this always is "find a sport you actually like", but if you're coming off of a years-long depressive sedentary period, start by walking. Like, TO places. The bus stop. A neat tree in your neighborhood. Is there a convenience store nearby? Go get a gatorade (see:hydration). Is there a library or other place where people gather? Even better. This is free and doesn't have to take any longer than 10 minutes at first. And don't go telling yourself "oh it was only 10 minutes it doesn't count" STOP! That is the depression talking! Literally any amount of movement is 100x more movement than you were getting on the couch! You're doing great! And once you're in a good exercise habit, it will help a lot with...

-sleep: ah, the white whale. But remember that literally just lying quietly in the dark is resting, even if you don't sleep (it's science!). Try to be in bed, no lights or phones, at the same time every night and just...chill. listen to some chill music. Try not to get up for a least a few hours. And then, the next day, when you’re wrecked?? Try to avoid napping at all costs. Your circadian rhythm should theoretically stabilize after a few nights of doing this, and resting should become easier. Human chemistry is SO routine based, just keep your schedule as best you can!

Nutrition: yeah this is depression hell. But it's not as expensive as it seems to "eat healthy". Apples, bananas, and oranges are all cheaper than chips and also require pretty much no prep, just shove em in your mouth (and don't give me that shit about caloric content; yes, I know chips are more filling, but they're not going to give you the happy chemicals you need to help depression. If you're so broke you will starve without 100 extra calories from a bag of doritos, your depression has environmental causes much deeper than lack of apples.) If you CAN cook even a little bit: frozen vegetables are cheap af and they slap with some butter and garlic powder. Throw some frozen peas in your mac and cheese. Kale and zucchini are cheap as hell in summer and they are delicious when flash fried with butter and salt. I know taking 5 minutes to cook seems insurmountable when you’re depressed but as my therapist always says, the cure for depression is doing the things depression doesn't want you to do. And it will improve your mood so, so, so much to get some fruits and veggies in you.

please notice that literally ALL of the above are about building HABITS. And habits are built by inches. A single serving of frozen vegetables will not cure your depression. But a single serving of vegetables, every day? a liter of water, every day? a short walk to see some trees or smth, every day? It really does help. And Don’t beat yourself up if you miss a day or seven days or fourteen days. Just pick it back up where you left off. 2 servings of vegetables in a month is better than 0 servings in a month, or a year.

First off here, I’ll put it out there that you don’t like Chiyo, but I do, so I’ll just say something.

Please understand that Chiyo is an old woman character meant to embody Sunagakure’s old traditions in a way. She’s been raised by them and therefore strictly lives by those rules. She was created to be the opposite of Gaara, old and aloof towards her village. When she referred to “Suna’s Harsh Teachings”, she really meant that, and she was the one to force it upon Sasori so she blamed herself as well. Yes, she was negligent; she was cowardly; but that’s sort of why she was created. To me, she really owned up to it well(though of course not enough to justify the things she did the past to Sasori and the village) by sacrificing her own life to support Gaara, someone young and strong who could make the village better. She knows what she has done to Sasori, but it’s a lost battle at that point, Sasori’s beyond the point of redemption, he’s in too deep. Chiyo battled Sasori not for his sake, it’s too late for anything to be done for him, but the least she could do is end Sasori’s life, a heavy threat to the future of Sunagakure itself. No matter how you slice it, how Sasori never got to cry for his parents, never got to mourn for them properly, he still ended up as a serial killer in the end with a morbid art. There’s no way to make Sasori better, he was a pretty sinful guy.

Chiyo /doesn’t/ deserve Sasori, but that’s why she’s trying to kill him. She’s also the only one who can do it, Gaara’s dead, Kakashi is off chasing after Deidara. She never acted like she was the villain, she only talked about what she had done and how she felt about it. Chiyo talks like that because she knows SHE is the villain, not the victim and plus it was character dialogue. Sasori was the victim, but grew up be the villain, a pretty badass one at that and made me go from ‘haha, stupid ninja’s…’ to a sobbing mess.

I understand Chiyo’s character. I know what she was created for. I was not commenting on her character on that meta level.

He ended up a serial killer in a morbid art due to the way he was forced to cope and the only skills he had the opportunity to learn. Before his leaving Suna, he’d already been finetuned as a killer. You can’t choose what you do when you are dependent on your environment for survival- all shinobi kids are put into acadamies and shit and raised to be ninjas and to want to be ninjas before they can form their own philosophies on the matter.

That’s done by his environment- every shinobi is in essence a serial killer, unless they are an incredible ineffective one.

I know she gave her life for Gaara’s to try and do some right for Suna, to rectify those mistakes. That’s part of what pisses me off. I’m not denying it’s one of the morally proper things she could have chosen to do.

I’m saying that while her giving up on Sasori was the more productive way out (considering no amount of anything can undo the damage that’s been done to him) it’s still not something that earns her the rank of family to the boy. Which she keeps calling herself.

This is not about whether Chiyo’s character has redeeming qualities, or whether she’s a good character in the story. As a character she is realistically written, flawed, interesting. Again- that is not the level at which I am judging her.

I’m calling her a crap excuse for family. And she is. Even at the end, she chose rather to do her best to kill Sasori- even using his parent puppets and you bet she knew what she was doing, because she is a cunning kunoichi and whether it hurt her heart to do it or not, she was waging psychological warfare (yet again) on Sasori. She chose rather to kill him than to show any kind of support.

Would that support have been welcomed at this point? Probably not. Would it have changed Sasori’s intentions to kill both her and Sakura? Oh no, I really don’t believe that it would. Would it have caused some hyperunrealistic magical boy transformation into a tea party instead of a lethal fight? Nope.

None of that is my point. If Chiyo wanted any gain from her actions, (which she did) choosing to save Gaara was the right way to go. She chose to move on from the “failure” that is everything she’s to do with Sasori, and to try and do something right for the Village. To actively sacrifice some, be some form of selfless, where before she’d always decided Suna was beyond hope and not her problem to try and fix. But my point is that this is still no good for Sasori.

And, as I am being SASORI PROTECTION SQUAD 2KFOREVER, I am not talking about whether she’s a decent person or an interesting character- i’m talking about the pain of a person who has to go through such terrible neglect and emotional as well as psychological abuse. About the abuser, a member of his blood family, who consistently continues calling herself his family yet does absolutely fuck all to stand by him and actually be that family. Once again giving him no example of real love, confusing the territories of emotion by giving something that is bad for him the name of something that would be good for him: familial love.

Any other course of action for Chiyo to take during/before that fight would not have magically turned anything around. But the point is that Sasori deserves some real goddamned support- Chiyo could well have focussed on supporting Sasori even during their fight, even without any other outcome, could have told him that she were there for him, even without supporting his actions. Not letting him kill her or anything frilly like that- but to oppose his actions, while still offering her support for him, as a person. Supoorting a person is not the same as condoning their every action. It is not rolling over and letting them do whatever. Emotional support does not require being on the same side at all. She could have offered him acceptance of who he was and had become, acknowledge the shit he went through and how it’s shaped him and her own parts in that (to his face, not to Sakura’s), but instead she judged and condemned him to death for actions he’d been forced into by the teachings of a lifetime that Chiyo largely influenced herself, all for the sake of her village. Which, yay, how noble, but still shit for Sasori- whom has no-one but her left for any family ties.

Say whatever you want, but a person is raised by his life. Who you are influences much, but does not dictate what you turn out to be. It is not Sasori’s fault that he is as he is. He makes his own choices, but those are influenced by everything he’s had to endure. He’s been conditioned into his very core. None of him acts without the influence of an entire lifetime of trauma.

And his morbid art is how he’s been taught to cope with the immense trauma of complete abandonement. From what we see, only Komushi interacts with him after he’s like seven years old???? And he’s considered a prodigy, so no doubt there was a shitton of pressure. Suna is one of the less kind Villages- rather unlikely to think a random friendly person would have reached out to Sasori and maybe helped him heal some. In fact we would probably have been shown as much in the manga if such a thing HAD happened.

He’s never been taught to be anything but a lonely killer. You can’t practise what you’ve never learned.

And I’m hating Chiyo for not trying. For not trying, regardless of outcome. I’m not telling her to die for Sasori or anything. Just you know. Apart from giving her life for a random kid (aight, kazekage, but still, not her “cute grandson oh dearie don’t I want to see him again purely for my own sake and do fuck all for him”) she could also have inserted some comments and given Sasori some consideration. It would probably even have rattled him some, if the outcome MUST be Sasori’s death. Or enraged him beyond fuck lmao. Nah, he’d probably be numb and somewhat rattled, as that fight continued on in a way to do pretty much that already, canonically.

Anyway, yeah. I hope that made sense. I’m not attacking her as a character in a story- but as a really crap grandma, who could’ve put in like two cents at the very end for her grandson and not solely for a village that. Sasori is alone. The Village has its entirety. Sasori needed it so much more, is all I’m sayin’.

If you've never found yourself as the victim of a cult, or sexual assault, or abuse, the only thing separating you from people who have been victimized by cults / sexual assault / abuse is circumstance. That's it. Sheer luck. Luck over what family you were born into. Luck over who you were surrounded by when you were emotionally compromised or in any way vulnerable. Ect.

You are not better than people who have been victimized. They didn't do anything wrong to ask to be victimized. Anyone can be victimized by these situations given the perfect storm of circumstances. You are not better than people who have been victimized by cults / sexual assault / abuse.

You need to understand that if you are lucky enough to have never been victimized by cults / sexual assault / abuse, it's very little to do with how smart or strong you are or you doing all the "right" things. Someone can be smart and strong and do all the right things and still find themselves a victim given the perfect storm of bad circumstances.

The sooner this can be understood, the sooner we can do away with victim blaming culture. And the sooner we can do away with victim blaming culture the sooner atrocities like cults, sexual assault, and abuse can stop being so prolific. Victim blaming culture allows these atrocities to thrive. And they will continue to thrive until we shift the blame to where it rightfully belongs.
