Calgary will celebrate the first year of a cocktail conference called Peeled, from August 12-14. The coordinators of the event liken it to the 'Sled Island' of cocktails, with events taking place in 14 venues around the city. Perennial Calgary favorites Milk Tiger and Proof - as well as newcomers like Last Best are among the hosts. A major feature of Peeled is a passport that guests can fill by tasting exclusive cocktails, attending seminars and special events. The basic cost is $40, going up depending on how many events you attend. Global bartending icons Dale Degroff and Jack McGarry (World's Best Bar recipient, Dead Rabbit - Owner) will be in town to lend their expertise at seminars in what's being called the Peeled Academy. Anthony Bourdain called Dale Degroff "the Grand Master Chef of cocktail making." Bartender Jeff Savage, of Proof Bar, is hosting two seminars. Savage shared with Bread, "I think it's really important to share the information we bartenders have accrued with the larger community. We're all nerds and we all spend a good chunk of our life studying and learning about our craft. Sharing it only broadens our city's experience with informed imbibing."
