little life update because if i don’t tell people on the internet every aspect of my life then i will explode ❤️

in typical juni p. pragmatist news, back in the horpital (i’m fine, the tests are reassuring, let us all join hands and pray to the yaoi gods that this won’t be another 10-30 day stay 🙏🏻)

but in bigger news, one of my doctors from last time just saw that i was admitted and came to the lounge i’ve been tossed in to show me pictures of the eclipse she took through her telescope…looked like big cheese…big cheese from the cheez-its commercial. social worker came to check on me and left me with origami papers. my primary care doctor showed up with her hands fanned out in confusion. i have the same nurses as last time. the mashed potatoes are simply microwaved potatoes poorly mashed with fork.

no conclusion to this word vomit, running on three hours of sleep cobbled together in a hallway ❤️

Twitter users are defending their right to assume Picasso was a renaissance artist. Tiktok users think watching any film made outside the US makes you a snob. “Replace classic lit with YA and fan fiction” discourse is flourishing. I think we’re just living in anti intellectual times.

Let me ask you this: how many “snobs” have you actually met? Because I have met many people who take interest in art history, watch vintage film or films from films from outside the US (which by the way are not all “arthouse” films), or read and cherish historically and culturally significant literature. But I have never met anyone who will treat me like I’m a bad person for watching Mama Mia or just wanting to be entertained once in a while. I have, however, met people who think art history is stupid and pointless and that those who study it deserve to live in poverty, who are xenophobic and dismissive toward any art made outside the US (or western Europe for that matter), or roll their eyes at people who read literature they consider boring because they’ve never given it a try. In fact, most of the people I know who you would consider “snobs” out of projected insecurity are cautious to bring up their interests because they think they’ll be made fun of. Is anti intellectualism “anti elitist?” At times, but it’s the sort of pseudo populism that fits comfortably within contemporary right wing discourse. Have you paid any attention to politics the last decade or so? If you are allergic to culture and new information, fine. Just don’t claim the moral high ground for it.

I don't know how much of this is a matter of language, but I think it's worth making a distinction between snobbery (looking down on or downright mocking people for the culture they do or don't "consume") and snobbery (getting to know a work of culture because it is in the undeniably arbitrary *one should know it* category). In Polish, the latter is called "healthy snobbery". The thing is, if you only interact with culture that's not even readily available (Gutenberg.org exists. Internet Archive exists. The culture at your fingertips is wider than ever) but served right under your nose by either producers, or algorithms, or even your friends, you'll end up in the exact echo chamber that rejection of snobbery was supposed to save you from. Except "The 100 books you should read" may just include a position that will have you question - question! genuinely question! as in think about it consider its pros and cons wonder how to improve it and learn how it came about rather than mindlessly reject it - the surrounding reality, which isn't exactly something increasingly monopolised media are likely to proactively give you.

The idea of english as a mother tongue is so strange to me, in my head english is how ppl communicate when there's no way in common to communicate, so english as a mother tongue sounds a bit like idk email as a mother tongue ykwim? Like english to me feels like the stuff that's used to fill the empty spaces between languages

so uh. Ursula Vernon is an acclaimed and accomplished writer (also known as T Kingfisher) of multiple genres, including fantasy and horror - lots of horror. she also wrote and illustrated the award-winning webcomic Digger. I knew this screenshot couldn’t be showing us her whole opinion, so I pulled up the actual tweet, and I was right! she goes on to explain that many in her crowd loved it, including her husband, but that it wasn’t for her. even more relevant than her original thread, though, is this response she had to someone who was asking in (apparently) good faith why she found the lack of humour frustrating:

like. yeah. not every movie requires a comedy element. of course not! but I think this post is ripping unfairly on entirely the wrong person. Vernon was clear in her original thread that being humourless did not make it a Bad Movie, and has been exceptionally straightforward about why that lack of humour felt detrimental to the film in her experience.

Community college is not only OK, it’s a very good idea. 90% of jobs aren’t going to care where you got your degree. For those remaining 10%, here’s a hack that can save you tens of thousands of dollars in tuition.

Go to community college, get an Associate’s Degree in General Ed. This will take you two years, and it is statistically likely that at the end of those two years you will have a better idea of what you want to actually do with your life than you did when you were fucking seventeen years old.

THEN Decide on your major. If you need a Prestigious School, you are much more likely to get in with an associate’s degree and a good GPA than you were with a diploma and a good GPA. Since you have an associate’s degree, those credits are locked. None of this “Okay, you can transfer to our college, but you’re going to have to retake your English Credits and maybe another humanities course” shit. You have a degree that says you completed that part of your education, and you can now concentrate on the remaining two years required for a four year degree in your major.

We are doing kids a major disservice when we act like college is the only life path that can lead to success. These days the market is oversaturated with hyper specific degrees that there aren’t enough jobs for, while not enough people are going into trades to keep those professions running smoothly.

You can go into a trade school or an apprenticeship instead of college, you won’t spend as much, and you will start making money sooner. And let me just add: people make good money in the trades.
