I have been drinking so I have stupid idea. I think it would be very interesting to do a sociological study on Tumblr. I'm not sure of what yet. it's gone through some weird times: david karp era, yahoo era, porn ban era, automattic era. there are overlaps in all of them, and you can (for the most part) feel them. almost like childhood, teenage years, "adulthood", actual adulthood. it's also very unique compared to other social media.
one unique thing: posts have longevity here. "legendary" posts that have cemented a place in my vocabulary might have 60k notes because it keeps popping up and it's *funny*. I also see posts (gifsets, apjvff posts, aesthetic photosets) from 10+ years ago on the dash, often some that have barely cracked 1000 notes. you don't see that on any other social media.
tumblr is not heavily algorithmically driven like twitter is and I think that's a big part of what makes it feel very human. long posts allow more unconventional free-flow and creative thinking. paid/subscriber posts were phased out a while ago. posts on twitter feel like single-shot jabs and QRTs feel like quick comebacks while reblogs on tumblr encourage collaboration, even if they're annoying. tumblr also feels focused on hanging out with friends. I don't really hang out with friends on twitter, I just lurk and scroll, but it feels much more friendly that twitter does.
this place is weird and I want to record what it's actually like somewhere. maybe I'll just open a file in ~/documents/notes/2026-06-12-metablog.txt and write about it more.
begin here:
This book takes an extensive look at the many different types of users and cultures that comprise the popular social media platform Tumblr.
Wondered how cream cheese wound up in sushi, turns out this lovely lady, Ai Saito, came up with it! It's a Jewish and Japanese combo, made possible in Philly!

you used to call me on my hands-free talking glove
I’m just wondering how they can possibly market this as hands-free
[Image description: a photo of a box for “sonic IQ Bluetooth Hands-free Talking Glove”. Extra text reads: “Talk and listen with your fingers!” The product picture shows two black gloves with three grey fingertips and a person making the old-fashioned phone hand gesture next to their face, with extra graphics indicating that the person’s thumb next to their ear is receiving and producing sound. End ID.]
Sometimes there's an elaborate bit, and then you commit to it and put a lot of time into creating something with it, pick up a new hobby or two... anyway. Here's Gatsby Great The
Wow people really liked this, or were at least confused by it!
Here's a digital copy of it, along with a plaintext version, prepared-to-bind version, and the cover.
Free to use, go wild. Gatsby is in the public domain after all<3 Just don't claim as your own y'all know how this goes right
i forgot to put it in the original, but when I went to fedex to pick up the pages, the employee said,
"If only there was an efficient way to read The Great Gatsby"
