Alright, so inspired by @NPurkeypile’s bee post yesterday, here is one of my favorite bits of Skyrim oral history - the myth of the treasure fox.
I’ve told this story before in talks/etc, but I don’t think I’ve shared it with twitter. Here goes.
The way Potterheads keep repeating "but what about death of the author???" almost feels malicious at this point. You should damn well know that having Good Intentions In Your Heart does nothing to stop the material impact of your actions (like keeping the IP relevant, creating avenues for people who weren't fans before to come into the fandom, etc).
Death of the Author is not a reason to keep participating in this fandom. It's just a shitty excuse.
Death of the author is for when the author is, y’know, dead. And no longer capable of profiting off your engagement. Death of the author fundamentally cannot apply to a living author who will use every cent you give her to make the world a worse place.
What death of the author/artist actually means=you get to interpret the work however the fuck you want regardless of the creator's intent.
What death of the author/artist does NOT mean=giving attention to a work that you know the creator will use to cause harm to real people.
Could I have worded that better? Probably but that's the gist in case anyone was still confused on what Death of the author/artist means.
Good addition. A lot of people use death of the author as “support a work without supporting the author” which, yeah, is not what it means, but when treating it in that context also just straight up doesn’t work when the author is alive and profiting.

Sometimes I have what I call "New Towel Blindness," which is basically where I forget I'm an adult with adult money that I can exchange for goods and services I would like, like say new towels instead of continuing to use my grandparents' hand-me-down towels they gave me when they downsized and I was in college.
And it is definitely one of those things exacerbated by growing up poor and then being a super poor twentysomething, but I think it's something many of us fall into.
Anyway today I bought a bra that doesn't cause my boobs physical pain, a purse in my style instead of continuing to use the poorly sized not-my-style purse I'd been gifted, and joined a gym because I remembered I can just give someone money in exchange for them teaching me how to lift weights instead of thinking "gosh strength training would be good to do as my body ages I wish I knew how."
Sheets, towels, PILLOWS (omg REPLACE YOUR PILLOWS), socks, doormats, tea towels, bras, cutlery (sometimes)
At my previous apartment I spent months plugging in my bedside lamp every night and unplugging it the next morning because using the nearest plug made the cord stretch across the middle of the room. Then I remembered extension cords exist and I went and got one for $5 and it was great.
Sometimes you don't even need to spend money to improve things, they just need to be rearranged! At my current place I don't like setting my water glass down on the hard stone bathroom counter top, so I'd been balancing it on a tin of ointment, but then I remembered I have coasters.
A while ago the handle broke off a bottle of cleaning solution, and I spent multiple cleaning sessions painstakingly trying to line up the broken nub with the place it's supposed to press and juust managing to get it to spray. Recently I remembered I can pour the stuff into a new empty spray bottle from the dollar store! Wow!
Realised I can just buy extra pegs instead of struggle to have enough pegs for the laundry. Incredible, now everything I hang out gets a peg and my laundry doesn't get spread over the yard.
Okay. For my money, the entire thesis of Chris Nolan’s 2026 film The Odyssey is that society chokes and sputters and dies when we abuse, ignore, or violate social norms like the laws of hospitality. That is not really what The Odyssey (the book/poem) is about, but I can clearly see why in the horror that is the 2020s, someone could read The Odyssey and go oh my god that’s a lot of bad dropping in. That’s a lot of bad visits. That’s a clear vision of how the loss of social norms and cohesion fucks you up and how war, literal, brutal war, is a terrible wound that destroys your humanity and your understanding of what civilization and society is. I don’t know that the iteration of Greek society that ultimately birthed the poem would agree with Nolan’s take, but I think this movie is quite ideologically coherent, that Nolan knew exactly what he was trying to say with each and every adaptational change, and I think he wasn’t nuts for using one of the most famous classical western civilization works as a way to make that argument.
The thing is this movie weaves that narrative together so well that it now has me questioning whether that was part of Homer's original intent that was just lost over the millennia. Like, Homer's version was compiled centuries after the Trojan War from bardic myths that had been passed down through generations, but the man knew his history too, and the Mediterranean was just recovering from the Bronze Age Collapse. Part of me wonders whether part of Homer's reasons for assembling all of these stories into a single epic was to make sense of "why did the world get so fucked up?"
Like yes, yeah, the gods were important and it was important not to defy them or think yourself above them. But in those days, gods were not at all the same as how we consider God and Religion in a post-christian monotheism-dominated world. Zeus was not "just" a big man in the sky who throws thunderbolts, he was lust and whim and hospitality. Athena wasn't "just" a woman of great wisdom, she was literally the concept of cities and civilization itself. There was an implicit understanding that gods were a kind of living metaphor, a way to grasp a concept much bigger than what you could directly see. There were gods for places and cultures and ideas and everything else. If it could be thought of or named, it had a personified god. It's just how people thought of things.
That's why you have all these reports throughout the East Mediterranean of gods literally dying around that time. Gods vanishing. They stop answering the phone. Entire pantheons were swept away because the concepts of society they stood for ceased to matter, because the chain reaction of death and pillaging and raiding and destruction caused by the fall of Troy broke the systems that supported their existence.
And yet people still celebrated the fall of Troy. At the same time that the world was falling apart, there were stories of great heroes and great deeds and exciting tales of survival being shared and embellished and passed down. Then Homer comes along and goes "hey wait a minute. This is all really tragic, actually" and ties them all together into a pair of epics so powerful they stay in the public consciousness for thousands of years.
Because if the gods are living metaphors that hold the world together, then hubris is the act of wronging the concepts they represent. Thinking of hubris in terms of "the sin of pride" is quite possibly a medieval Christianization of the story, and one that has possibly superceded the original message, or at least a message that has been there the whole time, waiting for someone to reinterpret it that way.
Is it the classic way the story is usually told? No, absolutely not. But is it valid? Is it viable? Is it something very valuable in CE 2026? Absofuckinglutely.

Hey. Why isn’t the moon landing a national holiday in the US. Isn’t that fucked up? Does anyone else think that’s absurd?
It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!
It’s July 20th. That’s the day of the moon landing. Next year is going to be the 54th anniversary. I’m ordering astronaut shaped cookie cutters on Etsy and I’m going to have a goddamn potluck. You’re all invited.

I didn't baby talk with her very much either! I think I squealed at her more than my husband did.
Something funny that has happened is that while she formally calls me Mama when she's answering me in passing she does call me "My Darling Love" and I don't know for sure but I think it's because I call her and her father "my loves" and her father calls me and her "darlings" and she's created a mash up 😂
So I'll say "okay penny it's time for bed" and I'll just hear "okay my darling love!" 😂

"The fun thing for us for that end sequence was his costume -- what he would have left over from the ship. I don't really think you see it in the film but the trousers that he's wearing, they're cut from one of the flight suits. And we've done a belt buckle that's made of xenonite that Rocky would've made for him. And all of the sewing on it is a little bit - it's nowhere near as good as Jenny would normally do, so we had to purposely ask Jenny to do bad sewing at the top of his trousers, so it'd look like he would've done it.
And then our brilliant breakdown department, run by Tim Shanahan, they break everything down to look like it's 10, 20 years old. So his cardigan and the t-shirt's all faded. And even on the laces -- the laces in his chuck taylors -- because your laces always break after a certain period of time, so we found stuff that was on the ship, like elastics and stuff. There's a nice big close-up actually in the film, so you can see that they're not normal laces, they're like stuff that he would've got from the ship that he's made as make-shift laces."
