The death of 1.5 million children is not âsome bad stuffâ - as I said on my other blog, I want you to imagine every single child from your local primary school, throwing up, gasping for air, starved, shot. Not sure where Iâm going with this yet, itâs kind of a jumble⊠but I thought I would share some information about the history of sex changes in Iran, because I think it can be useful for radfems.
Iran is the 2nd leading country in the world for most sex changes. Why?
At most, I think western radfems have heard that âIran does forced sex changesâ, and thatâs the extent of what people know. So I wanted to dig a little farther in and get some more information about how this actually functions and the history of it.
First things first - theyâre not exactly âforcedâ. But young gender non-conforming and gay people are being diagnosed with GID and pressured into transition for the sake of conforming to a fascist society, and escaping the heavy discrimination and criminalization of homosexuality in the country.
Those who do identify as transgender are heavily pressured and potentially subject to violence if they choose not to undergo surgery. They are forced to have surgery in the specific case that they want to live legally as the opposite sex. The law is essentially - Pick a side. If youâre gay and donât choose to transition, or your partner doesnât choose to transition, you have no legal right to have sex or live your life with someone you love. This has been going on since the 1980s.
Something I find interesting is how obvious the pipeline from gay -> trans is in Iran. Mental health professionals in Iran appear to be diagnosing anyone who is having issues related to their gender nonconformity or orientation as transsexual. (Sound familiar?) And because homosexuality is illegal in Iran and can even be punished with the death sentence, itâs easy to see why the pressure to conform is so heavy.
The first link below talks about how this system reinforces homophobia, with some transitioning people actually having homophobic beliefs despite being homosexual themselves.
I donât know⊠I think people have this idea that Iran is such a different place with such strange laws and religion that dictates what people do - But itâs almost exactly the same as whatâs happening in western countries, just amplified under a more fascist system, and in a different language.
Now theyâre trying to profit from medical tourism for sex change operations. See the last link below. Theyâre flying Americans and others in from western countries, organizing the whole thing, and doing major surgery before shipping them right back, likely without competent local doctors to treat their inevitable complications. All while gay people are still being beaten, killed, and subjected to conversion shock therapy practically right outside the door.
I think people in the US right now have this idea that conservative governments will put a stop to transition. And that may be true when it comes to children, at least in parts of the country, but we can see in Iran that sex changes are not only something that can be permitted under a conservative or fascist government, but can even be endorsed by that government and religious leaders. Not to mention the surgeons who make bank off the procedures.
Sex change in Iran is seen as a better alternative rather than accepting openly gay and GNC people. The lives and wellbeing of the people theyâre âtreatingâ are secondary to their need for absolute conformity. I donât think Iâm out of line to say that we see similar things in western countries.
I think that one of the biggest difficulties for women detransitioning is how much it can impact your life, your livelihood, and the way youâre treated by society when you go from passing and conforming as male to being viewed as a very masculine female person. The level of discrimination that weâre faced with as gnc women, and especially as wlw, is less severe than in more fascist and homophobic countries, but that discrimination is still very much a factor. And for many of us, we experience way more discrimination and possible violence or harassment as masculine women than we did as transgender men. There are so many social forces that push conformity at any cost, even in countries which are relatively liberal and less homophobic.
I think itâs important for radical feminists to know this history because itâs an important case study. I think it can be used to explain this concept to people who arenât aware of how conservatism has led to trans ideology, and how that pipeline functions in individual people who transition even in the west.

This behavior is what pushed me to look at "TERF" blogs as well. A well-meaning mutual messaged me to warn me that the feminist post I reblogged was written by a nasty TERF (the post in question was about women's healthcare and had nothing to do with trans people). So I was like "oh okay what does that even mean, why would someone writing such detailed things about feminism hate trans people?" and I looked at the blog and it was full of actual feminism, which I hadn't seen on here in a long time at that point.
A pride organization near me posted about the Minneapolis shooting. There was one sentence about the victims and FIVE FUCKING PARAGRAPHS about trans people. How this shooting will increase violence against trans people, mental health resources trans people can reach out to. Trans people, trans people, trans people.
How fucked in the head do you have to be to make this tragedy about the shooter and men like him instead of the innocent children he killed? I'm sick and tired of organizations like this claiming to speak for me, I really am.
