freaky little scavenger
I do not think I will ever get over how no character in the Iliad, however seemingly insignificant, dies without being named and their lineage made known. Sure, some of it is probably just convention for the time, but there is also the reading that it is a reminder that there is no faceless solider in war. Each man on that battlefield was someone's father, brother, son, husband, friend. And they will be remembered and mourned by those people. They were not un-named cannon fodder. They were people with lives, and each time someone on the battlefield dies - is killed - the poet reminds you, the reader, of that uncomfortable reality. For all the supposed glory that war brings, the price for said glory comes on the backs of loved ones slain.

i am once again making a silly little zine abt covid safety but this time it is very unserious and not educational at all so if ur new here and dont know what the Heck i am on about. here's a place to start!
id:
slide 1:
a photo of the front cover of a black & white printed zine held up in front of a quilt in the background. top text of the zine cover reads: "reasons I love wearing my mask in public" with bottom text in parentheses: "besides the on-fire garbage can that is public health these days." a cartoon drawing of Maria, a pale genderfluid person with a buzzcut and glasses, is winking and doing a peace sign. she is wearing a boat-style mask with a star mask chain and crayon earrings.
slide 2:
top text: "1: I haven't had a man tell me to smile in 6 years." Below is a drawing of Maria walking down the sidewalk wearing a black mask, a cat cropped t-shirt, patched jeans, & star earrings. They are carrying a Mitski tote bag and look unbothered with their eyes closed as a man who looks a lot like the distracted boyfriend meme holds up a finger as if he was about to speak, but just looks confused as his speech bubble reads "..." Bottom text: "I simply cannot go back."
slide 3:
Top text: "2: I don't have to make facial expressions." Below Maria is waving and wearing a polo shirt, blank face emoji earrings, & an apron that says "JOB" with a name tag attached. Maria stares blankly behind her mask. Bottom text: "autism wins!"
slide 4:
Top text: "3: I can sing to myself on walks without being spotted by traffic." Below is Maria strolling down the sidewalk with cars in the background, wearing a mask, a baseball cap, and a Phantom of the Opera t-shirt. Maria has a speech bubble of floaty text singing "aangel of muuusic" with music notes floating around.
slide 5:
Top text: "4: mask chains!" below is a boat-style mask with a mask chain made of letter beads that spell "yippee." Bottom text: "another layer of accessory-maxxing."
slide 6:
Top text: "5: adds to my aura of being the mysterious and unknowable coworker." Below Maria stands in their job apron with a black mask & mushroom earrings surrounded by question marks. Text around Maria reads "what do they look like??" "we are literally on the clock!!" "wouldn't you like to know weatherboy!!"
slide 7:
Top text: "6: nobody knows I'm eating fruit snacks." Below is Maria with her mask on wearing strawberry earrings looking nonchalant as text points to her saying "maria acting normal." In the bottom left corner we see through the mask like an x-ray showing Maria chewing as she holds a scooby-doo gummy. Text pointing to this drawing reads "the REAL maria."
slide 8:
Back cover of the zine shows Maria shrugging wearing a striped shirt, overalls with a heart patch on the front, and worm earrings. Top text: "of course none of these things are more important than keeping you & your community safe from preventable illnesses but if for some wild reason you don't care about that. this is everything the government doesn't want you to know!!" Below is the instagram logo and Maria's handle: @maria.therese.art
I also think it's good for people who do mask, and especially have to mask, feel like wearing a mask is a fun special treat rather than a horrible obligation of Bare Minimum
I like not having to shave perfectly also because that's super annoying u_u

Beautiful!!! Toksin's art is so good! <3
Some mildly annoying people think that the best way to engage with media that has problematic aspects is to pretend that they can fanon their way out of the original text having those aspects instead of actually thinking about why the original text was like that. But on the other hand, some absolutely repugnant people will read any critical reading of a piece of media as a declaration of war and loudly and proudly state that you the person doing the critical reading probably think they're evil for liking the media. So like, as annoying as the people in the former group can be, they at least don't usually do a Hitler transformation sequence upon getting a whiff of critical thought.
It is so ridiculously easy to gain a reputation for being competent by just reading signs.
This is not metaphorical. I mean actual, literal pieces of paper/plastic/metal/whatever explicitly erected to inform the public.
“How did you know this was the right trail?” I read the sign.
“Wow, how did you know what that flower is?” There’s a SIGN.
“How did you know we needed to use the side door?” THERE IS A SIGN POSTED ON THE FRONT DOOR.
Just…why are we having such different experiences of the world? People can read. I KNOW they can read. There’s nothing wrong with their vision.
Just. READ. THE. GOD. DAMN. SIGN.

Something isnt right
“It’s easier for trans women to pass/be stealth!!”
“It’s easier for trans men to pass/be stealth!!”
Actually it’s easier for people with very specific bodies (white, thin, average height) with large incomes and supportive families to transition medically in a way which is more likely to conform to strict ideas of ‘man’ and ‘woman’
I swear every time I see someone try to make the argument for one of us having it better they exclusively either cite celebrities (again, see white, rich, thin) or assume that the people they know irl are representative of every trans person.
It also begs the point that YOU DO NOT KNOW IF SOMEONE IS STEALTH UNLESS THEY TELL YOU. No one actually knows how many trans people successfully live as stealth.
Most of the passing trans people I know personally are women, but most of the trans people I know to be stealth are men. I also know far more trans women than I do trans men. Not to ignore the fact that these arguments completely erase non binary people who are pressured to just pick a binary gender to ‘pass’ as because it is functionally impossible to be a ‘stealth’ non binary person.
It is completely possible to have important conversations about the specific oppressions that different kinds of trans people face without framing one group as being completely objectively better off. Stop trying to pit us against each other. It isn’t easy for *anyone* to be trans in this world.

Heat waves.
Addition: The amount of bombs that Israel and the US have dropped on Gaza in the pursuit of genocide and settler-colonialism have significantly contributed to climate change over the past couple years and is directly linked to so many “once in a century” and “never before seen” weather and temperatures.
remember! when someone vents about racism instead of using their post to confess your sins you can simply☝️ Shut The Fuck Up
okay im not done. Like. Sure. I get the urge to confess stuff too in similar situations, I have OCD, I get it, but you gotta remember 1. this person did not ask for that information 2. you are only burdening them with the heavy implication they are there to absolve you which is not something they should ever have to do (why should they?) and 3. kinda making it about you, you know? that's not cool. And so you must harness the power of Shutting the Fuck Up.

my number one advice for parents is to listen to your children tbh. and i dont just mean listening to their problems i mean like. when your kid recites the plot of a movie youve already seen or your tells you about what they did at school today or wants to show you their roblox gameplay. youve gotta be invested in knowing your kid as a person or why are you even doing the whole parenting thing.
That’s going to be expensive!
Me: oh damn that's a lot of roof, you're right that'll be really expensive
Me at the end of the video: *jaw drops* OHHHHHH NOOOOO NOW I GET IT
