The night pressed in like a living thing.
Seiya stood in the dormitory bathroom, hands braced against the sink, her golden eyes staring into the mirror.
Her reflection was sharpâtoo sharp.
The thought came unbidden.
She squeezed her eyes shut, but that only made it worse.
Memories burned behind her eyelids, flashing like shattered pieces of glass.
She woke up to white lights.
Cold metal restraints dug into her wrists and ankles, pressing her small frame against the operating table.
Her pulse hammered in her ears.
She had been here before.
âSubject OR-01, conscious.â
The voice of Dr. Mayeda Gina rang out, clinical and detached.
Seiyaâs tiny hands curled into fists as she blinked up at the ceiling.
Old enough to know what came next.
The door hissed open, and footsteps echoed through the chamber.
Mayedaâs face hovered above herâa mask of calm efficiency, dark eyes unreadable.
His voice was gentle, but it meant nothing.
She had seen him smile at other children, just before they never woke up again.
âI need you to be strong,â he said, brushing white hair from her forehead. âYou were made for this.â
He sighed, pulling back. âBegin the injection.â
A sharp, piercing pain lanced through her arm as a syringe buried itself into her vein.
Seiyaâs body convulsed.
Fire. Electricity. Light.
It was like her blood had turned to molten metal, her cells splitting apart and reforging themselves in an instant.
Somewhere beyond the haze of agony, Mayeda watched, hands folded behind his back.
âHer reaction speed is increasing exponentially,â a scientist noted. âHeartbeat erratic. Subject mayââ
Seiyaâs golden eyes snapped open.
For a second, the entire room flickered, as if the universe itself had skipped a frame.
The restraints shattered.
A pulse of blinding light blasted outward, knocking the scientists off their feet.
Seiya sat up gasping, skin glowing like a dying star.
Seiya jolted back to the present, her breath ragged.
Her fingers dug into the sink.
The memory clung to her, its weight pressing down on her lungs like she had been drowning in it.
She forced herself to breathe.
But the line between the two places felt thinner than ever.
Because heroes were still disappearing.
And Seiya knewâdeep in her gutâProject Orion was at the center of it all.
She stepped out into the night, desperate for air.
The sky stretched above her, a vast, star-dusted expanse.
Normally, looking up calmed her.
Bakugou stood by the railing, his silhouette sharp against the glow of U.A.âs security lights.
His hands were shoved into his pockets, shoulders tense, like he was barely holding himself together.
He noticed her immediately.
âTch. You look like shit.â
She sighed. âNice to see you too, Bakugou.â
He didnât reply right away.
Instead, he studied herâthe kind of sharp, dissecting stare that made her skin prickle.
Seiya had spent years perfecting the art of hiding herself, but Bakugou had a habit of seeing through people.
âWhat?â she muttered.
âYou were there when Aizawa told us about Crust.â
âKaminari told us,â she corrected.
âTch.â He scowled. âYou flinched. When they said he was missing. Thought that was weird.â
âI was just surprised,â she lied.
Bakugou snorted. âYou donât get surprised.â
Silence stretched between them.
His eyes stayed locked on hers, and she knewâhe wasnât going to drop this.
âWhat arenât you telling me, Matsui?â
The truth sat heavy on her tongue.
That she knew why Chargebolt was missing.
That she had seen this beforeâin Orion, in the labs, in the rows of children who disappeared overnight, only to be replaced by something⌠else.
But she couldnât say any of that.
âI donât know what youâre talking about,â she muttered.
Bakugou growled, frustrated. âYouâre such a pain in the ass.â
She huffed a tired laugh. âTakes one to know one.â
The air between them felt like a live wireâcharged, volatile, one wrong move away from exploding.
Bakugouâs back was still turned, but Seiya knew better than to think that meant the conversation was over.
He wasnât walking away.
Her voice barely broke the silence, but he stopped.
She hated thisâhated how, for all his recklessness and arrogance, he was the only person who had ever looked at her like he really saw her.
She crossed her arms over her chest, gaze sharp. âYou think youâve figured me out?â
Bakugou scoffed. âI donât âthinkâ shit. I know.â
His red eyes burned, his jaw tight with frustration.
Seiya met his stare, unflinching.
âThen say it,â she challenged. âWhat do you think you know?â
âThat youâre not normal. That somethingâs off. That every time we fight, youâre holding back, and it pisses me off.â
Seiyaâs fingers curled into fists.
âPeople hold back all the time,â she said. âThat doesnât mean anything.â
Bakugou took a step closer.
âYeah?â he said, voice low. âThen explain why you move like someone hit fast-forward on reality.â
âIâve seen speed quirks before. You ainât one of them. You donât just move fastâyou disappear. One second, youâre here, and the next, youâre halfway across the goddamn battlefield.â
His gaze flicked over her, assessing, calculating.
âYou donât even look tired afterward.â
And that was the problem.
Seiya had been made to be stronger, faster, betterâbut she was never meant to be noticed.
She was supposed to blend in, act normal.
But Bakugou had never been good at ignoring things that pissed him off.
And Seiya Matsui was pissing him off.
âTell me, Matsui,â he continued, voice dangerously quiet. âHow does a first-year transfer from some no-name school end up going head-to-head with me?â
Seiyaâs lips parted, but no sound came out.
She had an answer readyâshe always did.
But under Bakugouâs piercing stare, the words stuck.
Because he wouldnât buy them**.**
And for the first time, the idea of lying to him felt⌠exhausting.
She swallowed hard. âDrop it, Bakugou.â
His hands twitched at his sides.
His expression shiftedâjust slightly.
And thenâsomething that made her chest tighten.
âYou donât trust me,â he said.
His voice was sharper now, edged with something unspoken.
She didnât know how to respond.
Didnât know why her throat felt tight, or why his words hit harder than they should have.
Because, logically, he was right.
She didnât trust anyone.
But when she looked at Bakugouâwhen she saw the way he stood there, waiting, like he would fight the truth out of her if he had toâshe felt something she didnât expect.
And that was so much worse.
Bakugou took another step forward.
Close enough that she could feel the heat of his quirk radiating off him, that his voice was low and rough and too damn close.
âWhatever the hell Orion did to youââ
His eyes flickered with something sharp, something dangerous.
âThatâs it, isnât it?â he muttered.
Seiyaâs fingers dug into her arms, her nails biting into her skin.
She forced herself to stay calm, to force distance back between them.
âI donât know what youâre talking about,â she said, tone carefully controlled.
Bakugouâs lips curled into a sneer. âBullshit.â
Because this conversationâthis entire thingâwas starting to unravel too much.
âIâm going inside,â she muttered.
She barely took two steps before his voice stopped her cold.
âIf you donât tell me,â he said, âIâll find out myself.â
Seiyaâs entire body went rigid.
Her mind racedâscenarios flickering through her head at light speed.
If Bakugou started diggingâif he got too closeâProject Orion wouldnât just watch from the shadows anymore.
And Bakugouâstubborn, reckless, doesnât-know-when-to-quit Bakugouâwould be the first casualty.
She turned back toward him.
Her golden eyes burned, her voice dangerously low.
âStay out of this, Bakugou.â
He just scoffed, stepping closer again, closing the distance she had tried to put between them.
His smirk was sharpâchallenging.
âYou know thatâs not happening.â
Because Bakugou Katsuki never backed down from a fight.
