Excited cause I finished the back of my (learning project) embroidery/cross stitch vest, so I attached the lining and eyelets so I could start wearing it in time for Pride :D
Temporary ribbons on sides will be replaced with chain of some kind. Lining in front is safety pinned along two sides so I can keep working on that
And replaced those ribbons with something thematically appropriate (courtesy of the chain by the ft selection at a hardware store)
Next wip: nerdfighter symbol for the right side :)
Also, explanations of the designs under the cut...
ALL RISE with mockingbird in white thread
The logo from the Aaron Sorkin adaption of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. It's a fascinating revisiting that challenges our initial view of Atticus as Heroic and Good. 10/10 recommended to see it if you can.
Don't Say Gay Scream It is in white with 'gay' in gold thread and a white outline over a rainbow flag (black, brown, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple)
In response to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signing his HB1557 Parental Rights Education Act in 2022, which read "Classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards."
It has later been expanded to all grades. (Apr 2023)
Colloquially known as the 'Don't say Gay bill', "Don't Say Gay Scream It" appeared as one of the protesting calls from student-led protests that followed.
Put These Seeds In Your Pocket That Flowers Will Grow Where You Lie in white thread with a large yellow and blue sunflower at the top left corner and a bunch of small pride flag flowers around the bottom and right.
On February 24th, 2023, Russia began its' invasion of Ukraine. In March, a video went viral of a Ukrainian woman saying this translation to Russian soldiers. Sunflowers have long been a symbol of peace and prosperity in Ukraine.
Anatomical heart outline in red with light and dark accents, filled in with blue, purple and pink bisexual pride flag.
The Bi pride flag was created in 1998 by Michael Page. The pink stripe indicated attraction to the same sex, blue as attraction to the opposite sex, and the overlap representing all genders.
I've finished my nerdfighter splash as well as adding pronoun slugs and a little Hebrew shin. Longer explanation under the cut
Next bits: swords, shields, and scepters! :)
Nerdfighters are fans of Hank and John Green, brothers who have made careers as youtubers, authors, educators, producers, and more. The two arms crossed in a circle is a symbol of the fans. DFTBA, don't forget to be awesome, is their famous sign off.
The pair of giraffes reference one of the most watched videos they have (and thus giraffe love became a nerdfighter motif). With them a tiny P4A nod (project for awesome - one of their big charity efforts).
A hanklerfish hangs out at the bottom with his Crash Course apple. Gotta love free educational content!
The pronoun section has Genderqueer squiggled downward and 3 banana slugs in the pride colors. Each slug has pronouns next to it (she/her/they/them/he/him) and is holding a protest sign where you can read the partial phrases of "we're here/we're queer/get used to it". I picked banana slugs because I wanted something with gender fuckery and I have plans to add a Santa Cruz banana slug later on
The Hebrew shin was my answer for a Jewish ally patch. The letter and blessing were the basis for Leonard Nimoys "Live long and prosper" Vulcan salute, so the patch doubles as a cool nerd fact!
Been a while since I last updated this, so there's a few new pieces done and one in-progress :) Short description is below, longer description under the cut.
First off, I've got my Night Watch (Terry Pratchett) tribute on the pocket flap. Then moving down the front button columns, there's Sailor Moon (Naoko Takeuchi) on the left and Valdemar/Tale'sedrin (Mercedes Lackey) on the right. Next is the Kingkiller Chronicle (Patrick Rothfuss). And then the in-progress bit is referencing Tamora Pierce's work.
The top of the breast pocket has the phrase "Truth, Justice, Freedom, Reasonably Priced Love, and a Hard Boiled Egg" outlining it in pale lilac. "See how they rise up" is centered above that in grey. There's an egg next to the button hole and a grey watchman's helmet on the right. Lilac flowers and flower covered branches fill out most of the remaining space.
This is all in reference to the book Night Watch from Terry Pratchett in his Discworld series. The first phrase is the (begrudgingly) agreed upon motto of the revolution, the second is a song about soldiers that is referenced throughout the story. It's hard to talk about much without spoiling things, but it is often a favorite within the Discworld fandom and celebrated with the Glorious 25th of May each year. It's a sad and wonderful story, and involves chasing a criminal through time.
Next we have Sailor Moon's scepter and all the planetary symbols of the senshi. I was into the anime and comics as a youngster, though the pining and drama were not particularly my thing. I did crush on Sailor Jupiter, though, and the art work was always one of my favorites... I'm considering adding something for Luna and Artemis as well, but figured I'd circle back once I had an idea for it.
Next is a crest outlined in silver with a rearing white pegasus on a blue background dotted with silver stars. There are broken shackles on two of the creatures legs. This is the kingdom crest for Valdemar, which is the main setting in one of Mercedes Lackey's universes. I was given one of the trilogies in this world (Arrows of the Queen etc) at age 12 and fell in love with the world and characters. There's tons of overlapping character series, and the whole work spans a lot of the world's history at this point. Also plenty of queer characters, polyamory, and whatever was going on with Lavan Firestorm.
Below that is a guess at what a Tale'sedrin hawk token might look like, since I struggled to find a reference. That's from a side series in the universe, Vows and Honor, that follows a sorceress and warrior mercenary team that I've always enjoyed. They deal with classic merc problems such as: "caravan goods being stolen through mind powered illusion and social engineering" and also "demonic entity creates snuff house/pleasure den to ascend to godhood and hates you specifically".
And the unfinished piece is a wolf paw print (top), badger paw print (left), and horse hoof print (right) in reference to Daine from The Immortal series by Tamora Pierce. More to come in that spot from the Lioness and Protector series as well :)
Next is the Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss - an amazing (unfinished) epic fantasy series that is so good I'll probably take 2 days off if the third book ever comes out just to read it.
I'vve got Auri's broken brass gear on the top left, then the silver Eolian pipe tavern logo on the right. Then we have Kvothe's lute and sword Caesura.
[Video Description: An ad with piano music over it all, showing an elderly woman in her home, knitting, when two younger men walk by her window, which catches her attention. She stares out her window at them as they kiss each other while walking, the old lady staring in disbelief. Cut to the old woman approaching a residence with a broom in hand, staring up at the second floor window where a small rainbow Pride flag is hanging. The old woman stares up at it and mutters "Ridiculo", before getting up on a ladder with her broom to remove the flag. Focus on the flag fluttering to the ground as church bells chime. The scene then cuts to the couple from before, approaching their home with grocery bags in hand before one stops and stares at the second floor, stopping his partner who then drops the groceries as he too stares up. It's then revealed that the small pride flag had been replaced with a gigantic, hand-knit pride flag. It then cuts back to the old woman's home, where a tin of rainbow-colored yarn sits on her table. The hands of the old woman are holding and fondly touching an old black and white photo of two young smiling women, leaning against each other. Cut to the old woman's face as she stares out with a look of happy pride on her face. At the end of the video, the name "Idealista" appears on screen, followed by "buon pride" along with a rainbow. End VD.]
The old lady is not in her home. She is at work. She's meant to be what in Italian is called "la portinaia", aka a cross between a doorwoman and cleaner of a residential building. She's in her small "office" space, at the entrance of the building, from where she can survey the coming and goings of the inhabitants. It's a job that has mostly disappeared, but is culturally very clear to us as having the connotation of "potentially gossipy, one-million-percent judgmental woman who sees everything that goes on in the apartment complex, knows everyone and their secrets, and has Strong Opinions™️".
In this case, thankfully, the Strong Opinion™️ is that those two men are ridiculous with their teeny tiny flag for ants.
A HANDY CHART FOR THOSE OF YOU WONDERING WHAT THE FUCK IS UP WITH THESE. NOTE THAT THESE ARE ALL THE INFORMAL AND YOU IS THE FORMAL SO LIKE YOU WOULD ALWAYS ADDRESS YOUR SUPERIOR/ OLDER PERSON/ SOCIAL BETTER WITH YOU BUT WITH YOUR BUDS YOU CAN USE THESE.
I’m sorry for adding directly to a post but I went to a wedding once where the groom’s name was Loren and the bride’s name was Lauren and at the end the officiant was all “introducing Loren [surname] and Lauren [surname], husband and wife” and the entire assembled lost it
also sorry for adding on but at my high school there was a Dominic and a Dominique who were dating and everyone just called them “Dom and Dommer” which is honestly the funniest shit ever
you know what really helps you locate any small paper cuts you might have forgotten you have? putting your hand in a bucket of acid. cool things I learned today
I buy citric acid crystals in bulk and mix them with water to make a bath for cleaning aquarium equipment. and then sometimes I reach in with my bare hand to take things out because I am fundamentally the kind of person who would do that
One of the guys I worked with told us a story about how, when they were doing archaeology surveys in the woods they ran into a bigfoot hunter. Bigfoot guy asked if they had seen signs of bigfoot, and he was like "Sorry, nothing like that. We're archaeologists, so we're looking for human stuff." and the bigfoot guy was like "Oh! I saw some Native American cairns on my way out here. I can give you a general location." and when he was like "Yeah dude, that'd be sick. We're actually looking to document those." the bigfoot guy was like "Yeah, they looked pretty cool. I didn't touch them though, because Native Americans built them, not bigfoot."
I apologize in advance for the "haha I misread this and thought..." but in all seriousness for two readthroughs I legit thought this was a story about an archeology survey team in the woods who ran into bigfoot and had a nice chat with him about his day and didn't bother to take pictures or document anything because they're only interested in human stuff, not in cryptids, but bigfoot was also nice enough to direct them to some native american cairns, which he did not build.
I can't believe it took me this long to post these I finished this like nine months ago
An idea I had for Blood of Eden propaganda/recruitment posters featuring some of our favorite guys - combo of digital-print cyberpunk graphic design style with oldschool Saturday Morning Post covers like you'd see Leyendecker paintings on
I was gonna post these ahead of tabling at a small con and selling prints of them but ended up not tabling because turns out grad school is hard
maybe next year... figured tumblr would like though
