I don't think Tolkien is a good fantasy writer because he scored the highest at some objective Best Fantasy Book Test that every fantasy writer has to take, I think he's a good fantasy writer because he created a world based on things that he was interested in. I feel like a lot of fantasy writers think that they need to create a whole language for their world because Tolkien did and obviously his books are the best so they have to emulate him, but Tolkien did that because he was a linguistics nerd. I think the lesson to be learned from him is not that you have to include elves and deep history and new languages, but that you have to write endlessly about the things you are a huge nerd about and use those things to create your fantasy world

im watching a little doc on youtube about an 11th century castle, and theres a bit where they are talking to a group of older women who are working on a large hand embroidered tapestry commemorating its nearly 1000 years of history & into the modern era.. and off on the border they show a bit where the women have stitched themselves working on it into the piece itself, and it made me kinda emotional

how amazing to have a visual depiction of the women who spent literal years painstakingly stitching such a wonderful piece of art that historically would have gone uncredited

I finished this a bit ago but behold! OUAW Gideon Go-Go outfit

Details:

I am aware that by "go-go" it was meant to be an exotic dancer-like outfit, but a 1960s go-go dancer was just so much more fun

This wass while Gideon had pink skin

Wow a decent amount of research went into this

His pose is form a promotional image for an Austin powers movie because it combined the sixties atmosphere with a sexy, cheeky play on it

Hehe long painted nails and blue lipstick and tiddy window

The main dress is based of the pattern of colors on a peacock's back, going from a rich midnight blue to cobalt, and then to a nice olive green

His bright yellow boots which were so much fun to shade

The sheer cape with the peacock tail pattern on it, very reminiscent of many sixties patterns I saw

It is somewhat reminiscent of theatre costumes because that feels on brand for both the setting an d the character

The main dress is meant to be velour, while the sleeves and cape are chiffon

The sleeves are patterned after a peacocks wings/feathers, which vary in pattern (sketched in the other pictures below):

As you can see above, I tried out a dozen or more poses and doodled and made notes on other things

I recommend everyone draw masculine characters in dresses its soothing

I love the manchineel so much, the wood is toxic, the bark is toxic, if you burn it the smoke is toxic, if you shelter underneath it in the rain the water running off the leaves is toxic, the fruit, which is pleasantly sweet, is incredibly toxic
