Always get back up. No matter what.
Oh to be a gremlin child again. Covered in grass stains and grazes, hair unbrushed with daisies in the knots, no concept of my own physicality, half way up a tree and eating an apple around my missing tooth. To be unabashedly ugly, to be unashamedly hungry, to be healthy and hearty and lean and covered in bruises and full of love and sun warmed strawberries. To feel time stretch forever, only flying when I fall into books. To love summer once more, and her insects and sweat.
Me, trying to get rid of anything that doesnāt spark joy: Ugh Iām such a dumbass I should throw myself away.
Marie materialising in my room: Yes, this negative attitude doesnāt bring you joy. You should thank it for getting you through your past traumas but you no longer need it or want it so it should go.
THIS IS BRILLIANT
On a lighter note.
The main reason I ever wanted to write a Hungarian mythology-based urban fantasy is that I needed to see someone do Bread Magic in a mundane modern setting.
Bread Magic shows up in a variety in Hungarian fairytales. It works like this: when someone evil, usually the devil, sometimes a dragon, wants to come into your house and hurt you, usually by taking your children, what you do is put a loaf of bread on the windowsill. It will speak for you.
When evil demands admission, the bread will say: First, they buried me under the ground, and I survived. When I sprouted, they cruelly cut me down with sickles, and I survived. They threshed me with their flails and I survived. They ground me to flour with their millstones and I survived. They put me in a bowl and kneaded me, then they put me in a hot oven to bake me, and I survived. Have you done all these things? Until you do all these things and survive, you have no power here.
This is pretty powerful magic I think, and it makes sense in a country where wheat is the staple crop and bread is the staple food. If you have bread, you are alive, if you have no bread, you are dead, therefore bread is life. It was customary to refer to wheat as ālifeā well into the twentieth century, and not in high literary circles either: rural seasonal workers negotiated their wages in so and so many sacks of life.
And I totally want someone to do bread magic with a shitty store-bought muffin.
The bread monologue reminded of the English folk songĀ āJohn Barleycorn,ā so now I kinda wonder if it would also work with beer!
Beer would absolutely work. As would vodka, and other cereal-based distilled alcohol. Thank you for bringing John Barleycorn to my attention!)
(Iām not an anthropologist, but the personification of important food plants as a creature that dies and comes back to life is sort of a thing in multiple cultures.)
Youāre very welcome! I actually own like ten different versions of it, which I wasnāt even trying to collect, itās just that a lot of folk singers record it.Ā But yeah, it doesnāt surprise me that the motif is widespread. Some googling also turned up this Danish folktale, which uses a similar motif.
While itās generally true that real siblings donāt routinely call each other ābroā or āsisā, as certain stripes of popular media would have us believe, there are occasions when siblings may refer to each other as ābrotherā or āsisterā in full. Those occasions are when you want to fuck with people, and thereās a specific Voice you use when you do it. Anyone who has That Kind of sibling relationship can back me up here.
For those wondering what the Voice in question is, there are actually several recognised variants, including (but not limited to):
The eerie singsong āhello, brother/sister~ā when you want people to think youāre in some sort of cult
The bombastic, Viking warrior style āwell met, brother/sister!ā when you want to give notice that youāre about to do something stupid
The conspicuously formal āyes, dearest brother/sister?ā when you want folks to think youāre Up To Something⢠(but may or may not be planning anything in particular)
The cold, mechanical āgreetings, brother/sisterā when youāre acting like robots because of a specific in-joke which you will never explain

i called a place to get winter tires on my car and the guy asked me for my ātire sizeā and ārim typeā i have never been so scared in my life sir i donāt know how to use my windshield wipers
Alright but in reality, if youāre driving a vehicle you should be responsible enough to know your tire size, oil type, how to change a tire, and you should keep jumper cables in your trunk. Itās not cute to be incompetent. Especially when all these things can be learned through comprehensive video tutorials on YouTube, which you most certainly know how to use.
i would rather die than learn something . Go to hell
If that is your honest opinion, sadly, youāre dead already, beloved. š
What the hell lmfaoooooooooo
I read the Uniform Code of Military Justice when I was in the Navy.Ā It not only allows service members to refuse an unlawful order ā it requires us to.
Obeying an unlawful order is a crime under UCMJ, and no, āI was only following ordersā is no defense.Ā We already settled that, at Nuremburgā¦.
the government shutdown has had a huge impact on native people, who receive funding for things like child welfare, food pantries, and healthcare through indian health services through federal funding. keep in mind this funding was prepaid for through treaties in exchange for our land - land that our congress who has put our people through this financial hardship is living on. if you have the money to spare, consider donating to local native tribes.
this map can show what nationsā land you are on, or you can googleĀ ālocal native american tribes near [city, state]ā. some reservations have links right on their website about how to donate either electronically or by mail. other nations, such as the pawnee nation in OK, have set up a gofundme for native families affected by the shutdown.
if you canāt donate, please reblog this. iāve seen countless posts about the shutdown but none about how itās affecting indian country.
This is great thank you

Well someone needs to tell those people in China to tear that wall down because it wonāt work. Oh, while youāre at it talk to the Pope about his wall as well.
ok sugar. I doubt youāll listen, but.
The great wall of China didnāt work. The great wall of china was built because they had trouble with roving nomads Ā riding down from the north and attacking them. It took millenia to build, was never all that effective at stopping invaders, as many as 400,000 people died while building it, and it was symbolism and pride more than anything.
The wall around the Vatican didnāt work. This one was built to protect the Basilica of St Peter, and surrounds an area 1/6th the size of central park. It also has a big ol gate in the front of it so anyone can walk inside. When it was attacked, the wall was a delay, not a preventative measure.
The best effective example is the Berlin Wall, and even then āeffectiveā is a generous term.
Reblog to have something good happen at 1:42 tomorrow
I saw this before I left work last night and had a quiet hope, and today I checked my phone at about quarter to two, while I was still on my lunch break, and Iāve just got a job interview with the BBC next week
Iām not a big believer in anything much but Iām so happy holy shit. So like unrelated note but something real good happened to me at 1.42 today lol
tis the season
I forgot about this
I havenāt seen this show up on my dash ONCE yet this Chanukah season I have to do everything by myself
Iām suing the U.S. government for causing the climate change crisis, and I'm 22.
My name is Kelsey Juliana and Iām suing the United States government for causing and accelerating the climate change crisis. Iām 22 years old and Iāve been a climate activist for more than half of my life.
I know that young people like me, and others who have yet to be born, have a right to a safe climate system. The constitution guarantees all Americans the right to life, liberty, and property. But how is anyone supposed to live a life of freedom amid a climate crisis? My own government is violating my constitutional rights by its ongoing and deliberate actions that cause climate change and itās not right.
I, along with 20 other young people from around the country, filed a lawsuit against the federal government in 2015, called Juliana v. United States.
Weāre not asking for money. Instead, weāre asking the court to order the government to develop and implement a National Climate Recovery Plan based on the best available science.
This plan should end the reign of fossil fuels and quickly decarbonize our atmosphere so that we can stabilize our climate system before itās too late.
The longer we go without climate recovery, the more we risk allowing our climate to spiral completely out of control.
And the climate is spiraling out of control, no matter how many politicians claim weāre experiencing normal fluctuations or, worse, a āhoax.ā All of the expert witnesses in our lawsuit say that we are currentlyāalreadyāin the ādanger zoneā and an āemergency situationā with only 1°C of planetary heating. Allowing the planet to heat up any more is not safe for our species, as well as so many others. And according to the Trump administrationās most recent environmental impact statement, the planet could heat as much as 7°F before the end of this century. We cannot allow this to happen because we simply will not survive.
We originally filed our lawsuit against the Obama administration. That administration tried to have the case dismissed, but the judge ruled in our favor and found that we should be allowed to go to trial.
In 2017, the Trump administration inherited the lawsuit and it has done everything in its power, employing every conceivable tactic, to deny my fellow plaintiffs and me our right to present our case in court. This administration is so fiercely attempting to silence our voices.
At this point, every level of the federal judiciaryāthe U.S. District Court, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Courtāhas denied the Trump administrationās efforts to have the case thrown out. Yet it will not halt its efforts to avoid standard legal procedures and confront us, the nationās youth, in court.
Our trial is officially scheduled to begin on October 29, 2018 in Eugene, Oregon.
What weāre asking for could change everything.
My fellow plaintiffs and I want you with us as we head into the courtroom to confront the United States government for knowingly violating our constitutional rights. Supporters will hold rallies in every state around the country, so if you canāt be with us in Eugene, find your local rally here.

Despite what modern core nihilism will tell you, the accidental nature and inherent meaninglessness of life as a biological phenomenon does not mean that our efforts are pointless but instead allows us all to determine what we personally desire out of life. It means we are free to pursue what our hearts desire, and so enables each of us to find our own unique meaning.
Also love is real.
And the majority of people in the world are inherently good-natured.

Okay, at this point there has to be something wrong with me, right? Iāve watched this 20 times in the last half hour, I still donāt know what they are saying half the time, but it doesnāt seem to matter because iāve been crying my eyes out laughing for the entire last half hour ā¦
what the fuck is this from i gotta know
itās called letterkenny and itās about a man who gets dumped and then goes on to shirk his pacifism and reclaim and hold his title as the toughest dude in the rural town of letterkenny ontario. every episode cold opens like this in increasingly bizarre ways.
I read the bit about not being able to parse whatās being said and then I read the bit about it being set in this fuckin province, and I thought, like, what kind of accent could they possibly use that was so incomprehensible while still setting it in northern goddamn Ontario? and actually, okay, you know what, despite having lived immersed in it my entire lifeĀ Iām not sure iāve ever seen this exact accent on tv before, it is just weird to see actorsĀ using it
My cousins grew up with the guy who wrote this show and is the main actor. Itās scary accurate for hick town Ontario (itās based on the town of Listowel) and apparently some of the characters are based so closely on real people that theyāve recognized themselves while watching.
ARE YOU GONNA FIGHT IN THOSE SHADES OR PLAY POKER STARS DOT COM
Distribute some free literature.
I lived near Ontario in rural NY and we picked up this sort of similar affect. Itās so scary how true-to-life this is in that area of the contintent
Iām just gonna leave a link to season one episode one right hereā¦
