I kind of wish there was some place nearby that sold peking duck. The only time I've gotten to try it was the time I spent a day wandering San Fran alone and I decided to walk into a random Chinese butcher's shop and get a whole peking duck to go for my lunch because I wanted to try it.
This was part of that same summer living on my own that I encountered the Church of the Lorax.

I’m pretty sure the entire point of Jurassic Park is that science shouldn’t progress without thought and boundaries. That human arrogance in assuming we know enough to do anything science lets us will eventually come back to bite us in the ass. But sure, it’s really all about capitalism bad. Great to see the media literacy crowd still sees everything as a nail.
In the movie John Hammond wasn’t very interested in profits. He wanted to share the wonders of dinosaurs with the entire world.
The book had way more capitalism involved. Hammond absolutely was being driven by making money, but capitalism was driving scientific innovation rather than hindering it. In the book bioengineering was a very competitive field. A few weeks could make or break a company. If your competitors make the breakthrough first your company goes under.
In-Gen already made that breakthrough. They developed the process to extract dinosaur DNA. They made the process of filling gaps in that DNA caused by tens of millions of years of degradation. They developed the process to make dinosaur DNA into embryos. They didn’t need to cut corners to beat someone to the dinos. They were already there.
The disaster came from the arrogance that they had everything under control. They had the dinos on an island to keep them contained. They developed the dinos to not be able to produce lysine. They need a steady diet of the stuff or they die. Should they leave the island there’s nobody to feed them. The dinosaurs were made all female to stop them from reproducing. Finally, they had cameras all over the park and the computer would count the dinos often. Sounds like a good system right?
Well, the scientists didn’t realize that some of the DNA used to fill those gaps would allow some dinos to turn male as seen in some west African frog species. This made the dinos able to reproduce.
The dino counting system was given a target number. Find 4 velociraptors. If there’s only 3 raptors it raises an alarm that one is dead or missing. If there’s 6 of them it stops at 4. The dinos are expensive to replace that’s the real concern. They can’t reproduce so why bother double checking them?
There was a whole flock of raptors born in the wild that nobody knew about. Compys were hitching a ride on cargo ship back to the mainland. Their bodies can’t produce lysine but the body knows what it needs. They were driven to eat things that were rich in lysine allowing them to survive.
There were dinos reported on the mainland before the incident but In-Gen ignored it. They can’t be getting off the island because they can’t reproduce and they’re all accounted for on the island.
The scientific experts making the dinos were offended at the idea that maybe they are reproducing and getting off the island after all. Double checking their safeguards was absurd. The science shows they can’t reproduce and they can’t survive on their own.
Even if Nedry hadn’t sabotaged the park dinos were still getting to the mainland and reproducing. The park still had that wild flock of raptors. If the park had opened that would have been deadly for unsuspecting guests.
