Media Log - Guitar Hero III
The game that (didn't) start it all. Well, it did for the people at Neversoft. This was their first game, and also the most popular Guitar Hero game to have ever released, probably because it came out on everything under the sun, after being PS2 exclusive (excluding a 360 port of GH2) for 3 games.
Neversoft took over from Harmonix (well be hearing about them if i ever get to the Rock Band games) after Guitar Hero: Rock the 80s. These are the people who did Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and honestly probably didn't have the qualifications for making a guitar rhythm game, especially after taking the helm from an entire team of musicians.
This is also the first game to not consist of covers, but rather the original releases of the songs (and before you mention it, yes I know there were a few songs that didn't use covers in the original 3 games. This is not the point). Rock Band and later Guitar Hero titles kept this up, though this game is definitely the worst with it. Songs have inconsistent sound quality and inconsistent volume, such as Paint it Black being really quiet compared to other songs.
This is honestly the bog standard of what a Guitar Hero game should be and feel. The background visuals look good, the gameplay feels fine, and the songs they chose are overall pretty good. If your game looks and feels worse then this, you have failed. I'm not saying GH3 is bad, even though it has some issues performance wise on the ps3.
The gameplay feel is perfectly fine. It has some general issues but works well for what it is. I do think Neversoft continued to make the game feel better game after game, even if World Tour is an overall worse game then this one.
The graphical style is great, It's amazingly stylized, working off what Harmonix had been doing in the previous 2 games. (If you ask why I say 2, Rock the 80s is nearly identical to GH2.) A lot of the characters have pretty decent real time physics which is nice to see in a game like this. The general UI feel is kind of outdated (still using a per-play high score mechanic for Quickplay like arcade games, though this game did get an arcade port so...) but still works really well for what it needs to do, and doesn't do anything outright wrong.
Neversoft wouldn't start doing full motion animation for specific songs till Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, so this games venue animation is overall pretty boring, though nothing is outright bad about any part of it.
The game was the first to get a decent amount of DLC support (GH2 only got limited DLC in its 360 port) and had an exclusive song for the PS3 version from God of War II. The 360 version had a remix of the Halo theme. I didn't grow up with nor have I played God of War II so the novelty of a God of War song is lost on me.
This song went on to be the hub of PC Guitar Hero for a while, having hundreds on hundreds of custom charts for it on PC (and I believe 360?). It wouldn't be until Clone Hero that GH3 was truly replaced, which CH based its gameplay on.
I give this game probably a 7.5/10. This is the general floor of a guitar hero game for me, either this or Guitar Hero 2. If you look worse then this, if you play worse then this, or if you sound worse then this, you've failed. I'm not saying you have to be as stylized as this game, I'm not saying you have to be graphically better then this game, just that the game shouldn't look cheap.
Adding onto this after a few years, mostly a small addendum. I’ve never liked Halo so the novelty of that song on 360 also goes over my head. Sorry.
BetterGH3 and GH3DX do improve the game. GH3DX adds some small fixes here and there along with some convenience stuff like an FC indicator. Nowhere as extensive as something like RB3DX, but it’s an improvement either way. It also adds Rock Band guitar support on 360, which didn’t exist for the 360 version.
BetterGH3 is mainly for the PC crowd, and it is definitely the best way to play GH3 overall. It allows for higher framerates and has pretty good instrument support, along with a lot of bug fixes, all DLC, and better access to customs. I don’t use that often as I prefer the consistency of my 360, but it’s pretty awesome.

The Last of Us Part 2/Remastered (4/5)
Again, expect an addendum for specifically Part 2 Remastered. I have played through Part 2 A LOT more then I have the first game's story. As such, I have A LOT to say about it. Also because, I feel TLOU1 doesn't have THAT much to say about it. EXPECT SPOILERS. I WILL be talking about the game's ending and story progression.
This game's ending sucks ass. Ellie's Jackson and Seattle Day 1 are great. Abby's chapters up to Santa Barbara are great. I feel that Ellie's latter Seattle parts and The Farm progressively get worse and worse as the story goes on. But, let me talk about the half/half character split.
I like it. I think it works really well.
I feel people put themselves AS Ellie, rather then experiencing Ellie as her own. The game’s Abby half is showing the consequence of Ellie, not the player. It’s interactive TV, experience it as such. You are bringing these characters to THEIR decisions and THEIR written path. This game is NOT an rpg, do not experience its story like it like it is. You will miss the point of Abby if you fail to recognize that. Killing the dog as Ellie and then getting back to that as Abby with a “wow that was fucked up” shouldn’t make you go “why are they telling me I'm fucked up”, it should make go “Wow, Ellie is fucked up!” because that was Ellie’s written decision. You aren’t playing as John Fallout, so don’t experience the story and actions like you are. You are not responsible for Ellie’s or Abby’s actions, don’t act like you are.
Getting back to the game's actual story progression. I feel Ellie's motivations fall apart as the game continues on and on. I can at least somewhat understand during Seattle, as she IS there I can understand her really pushing to finish the job. However, everybody else in her life is going "don't fucking do that. that's stupid. why are you doing this." and Ellie just keeps pushing on without giving herself any real reason at that point. I think it truly falls apart in Day 3. Like yeah sure, Tommy is still out there, but even the people around Tommy have the same feeling, that he shouldn't have gone out over it. That vengeance in Ellie doesn't sit right because It doesn't feel like she should even be pushing for it anymore during Day 2, let alone Day 3. I don't understand having Owen and Mel killed other then shock value. I'm not even sure why Owen was protecting Abby so bad.
And then we get to The Farm, and I feel every motivation Ellie has falls apart. She has a family, she has a good life, and she completely throws it away for a vengeance fight she DOESN'T EVEN WIN. She's having horrible PTSD from the whole thing, yeah, sure, but that doesn't really back up her motivation. I think Tommy was stupid even for coming. And like, yeah, sure "oh but if Ellie didn't come Abby would have died anyway!" but, I just think you can just get rid of Santa Barbara entirely.
However, I do think the fight with Abby and Ellie is one of the best scenes in the entire game. Despite me saying all that shit about that, it gives a unique experience seeing what WAS you playing the game, with all the abilities and weapons, now fighting you. It's a super unique experience and feeling that I don't think I've ever seen another game do. I've seen a few games where you fight another playable character, but it never feels like you're ACTUALLY fighting what you as a player would have available to you as that character. This fight truly feels like you're fighting what player Ellie actually has to her disposal.
I do think the best way to describe Part 2's gameplay upgrades is that it's basically TLOU Turbo. It is significantly faster and sprinting has a lot more use cases in fighting. Really everything is faster in this game, Joel is quite slow of a man. Weapons are generally more accurate then weapons in the first game. Even Ellie's automatic weapon is significantly less inaccurate then Joel's was and actually a pretty decent option in combat.
General movement has been improved, I feel exploring is just significantly better in Part 2. The way characters naturally move and interact is also better, and I feel like they consistently move realistically as they provide conversation between each other. They really do convey character feeling in movement really well, especially when Abby is walking across the crane.
The game is designed pretty well, I never found myself struggling with puzzles in this game like I did TLOU/P1. There's parts where if you miss the correct way to go, your partner will call to you and actually point to where to go.
I absolutely love the upgrades to Human AI in this game, mainly in relation to voices. Every single enemy GENUINELY has a name. Other enemies will call out a certain person is dead. These call outs are SO useful, they give you such an easy sense to know where they are without listen mode. I heard a lot of shit for this being something they did to 'guilt the player', but it really adds to the game's combat mechanics and I think it was a good move. It doesn't really feel like they're guilting you for killing. It makes the world feel more real.
I haven't really touched on the graphics, and that's because there's not a lot to say. The game is EXTREMELY realistic, and I think the first game to truly hit photorealism. It was AMAZING to see this game running on PS4 Pro at 30fps. So much of the world is actual physics props and it is a lot of fun to mess with them. One of my favourite effects is the glass shattering, It's so satifsying every single time. The game added ropes as a mechanic, mostly related to some kind of puzzle. The rope physics are super impressive, they move very well and are used decently often. Seeing ropes realistically collide with the world and then be able to use them is still crazy to me.
Remastered Addendum: Now, I REALLY like No Return. However, this is not a No Return review, I will do that separately. Remastered somehow managed to break the Story Mode entirely. Every single time I play the story I get constant issues with the game not loading areas. I'm on stock PS5 hardware, It's not the PC port at all, I'm not using any external drives. It's just outright broken and I don't know how they managed to break it. The original game runs PERFECT on my PS4 Pro and PS5 through BC. Now, I recorded all my footage for this review via Remastered, because I knew I was going to do No Return. I have nearly 15 minutes of footage of this game having some kind of issue and I only played for about three hours total. Part of Seattle Day 1 as Ellie, Eastbrook Elementary plus most of The Tunnels, and Part of Seattle Day 2 as Abby, The Shortcut and The Descent. I've had these issues since Remastered launched and I've reinstalled this game 3 different times so it's not an install issue at all, It's just broken.
Game Log - The Last of Us (4.5/5)
Just an absolutely iconic title screen.
I will be including all 3 versions of this game in one as they are all, effectively, the same exact game and I've played all of them. Remastered in 2016, Part 1 during 2025, PS3 during 2025. I even used a guide of Remastered during my playthrough of Part 1. I should state I HAVE played through all three versions of these games. I will get to my thoughts specifically about Part 1 at the end, however all footage here will be of Part 1 and it will be mentioned throughout. I haven't seen the show yet, and I'm not sure if I'm ever going to sit down and watch it. I will get to Left Behind however, big trust. I've played it on Remastered but I want to finish my Part 1 replay before writing one for it.
Playing through the game on PS3, it's crazy how good that game looks on PS3 for running at a VERY solid 30fps. Genuine technical marvel (like part 2, but i'll get to that during Part 2's review). Yes, Remastered looks WAY better then it does on PS3, but it's by much less of a margin then I ever thought it'd be. Part 1, of course, looks just as great as Part 2.
There's a big reason why this game was so influencial. It annoys me that people write off TLOU (and TLOUP2) as just 'Games that want to be movies' because, most cinematics are only a few minutes long. This game has a VERY good balance of cinematic and gameplay, and doesn't have that issue of making you sit there with your controller in your lap. Yeah, sure, you could argue that 'walking and talking' are cinematics, but you're still given control over Joel/Ellie and the camera. The exact kind of cinematics that made Half-Life and especially Half-Life 2 so influential.
The writing is extremely solid and it's cutscenes feel like proper TV. It's music is phenomenal for the game, it always matches with what's happening and very iconic to the game. Everything is directly so well, even during gameplay moments. While the lighting itself is great, this game (at least Part 1) is pretty consistently very dark, all of the gifs here have had their lighting curves adjusted just to look clear. I commend the death animations, as they feel so real especially with the music to go with it. (I won't put a gif of one here, don't worry.)
You can really feel how Ellie grows on Joel over the course of the game. Yeah, I don't think Joel made the right decision in the end, but it's at least very easy to understand why he made that decision and it's hard to truly blame him for it. I will always love Bill and Tommy's little sections. I like that they're incidental characters that Joel just happens to know, makes the world feel much more real. The little section where you play as Ellie I do really enjoy, as you're kind of forced to not go head on because she's took weak for a direct physical fight. Also shows how much Ellie cares for Joel, even if Joel wasn't really reciprocating it.
Enemy animation is so well done, the way you can feel the weight/punch of bullets and the way characters fall is just fucking amazing. Blood splatter really adds to it as well. People give a lot of love to GTA4 and both Red Dead games for similar features, but man, Last of Us is also great at it. I think TLOU also uses it as more directly of a mechanic then Red Dead does.
The gameplay itself, is phenomenal, and even better with Part 1. Movement is very tight, gunplay feels real. I like that the automatic rifle is generally not that great, as Joel wouldn't really know how to get good use of it. Guns feel like they really do have their weight and recoil. Crafting really feels like a rush during combat. There's a lot of options in sneaking with how TLOU is level designed, mainly you can go full silent and deadly or as more of a cover shooter.
I did find myself struggling with resources a bit, though I think it's more intentional then I think/feel. During the University section playing Part 1, I got really fucked over with a lack of ammo and it made me take a pretty long break. Even then, I'm excited to NG+ Part 1 at some point, as Part 2's NG+ was quite fun as well.
I do have some issues with specific enemy mechanics, but it's more how certain enemies are designed and I'd like to get to that when I review Part 2 Remastered's side mode, No Return, as enemy AI isn't too different between both games.
Joel really does feel like such a scary force, and I think they convey it well when an enemy begs for life. Okay. so about Part 1. This remake is very much useless. The original isn't that old (Only a little over 10 years) and hasn't aged bad at all, especially with the more commonly played Remastered. Part 1 didn't even get any story changes at all, so I'm not exactly sure why they did this. However, I would recommend Part 1 over the original if you are new to the series, it's a flat out upgrade. It has significantly QoL improvements over the original and doesn't remove anything except the multiplayer that no one played to begin with. Yeah, there's things to be said about how it's somewhat removed the original stylistic choices of the original, but it's not THAT significant. Though, I did notice during the sewers there was a lot less greenery then in Remastered. Unless you REALLY liked Part 2's gameplay, there's no real reason to get this if you already have Remastered, or if you just wanna get Remastered because it's cheaper. Though, Part 1 is on PC unlike Remastered, so that could factor in for some people. I'm on PS5 though. I like this game a lot, and expect Part 2 where I have a lot of strongly worded things to say about it's fucking story and also it's shitty remaster.
