Amazing how the difference between having fancy culinary little treats and eating unhinged goblin bullshit is just having nice ingredients at hand. Like ooh look at me, I'm making myself porridge sweetened with brown sugar and raisins, with a dash of cinnamon and bit of vanilla in there, because I happened to have those around and was craving something sweet.
In different pantry circumstances, I'd be eating jam straight out of the jar with a spoon.
Having a bowl of frozen peach slices with a drizzle of honey on top. The peach slices were supposed to go into a sorbet making attempt that I gave up on. It may seem and feel like a fancy little treat, but I am straight-up eating ingredients.
Throw the frozen peaches in the microwave at 30% power for about 3 minutes, then drizzle with honey and a little cinnamon and maybe some allspice and / or nutmeg and put them in for another 3 minutes at 30% power. Quick and easy peach compote. I've taken to eating that instead of ice cream when I want a snack.
please pray for us, we have had one thing after another this past month, multiple emergency hospital and dentist visits on top of difficult health issues we're managing at home and, in what feels like the final straw, one of the kids started throwing up last night
There is reasonable discussion about the problem of evil to be had, but I dont think we should lose sight of the fact that God's answer to human suffering is the cross. We don't have the proper perspective on this question at all if we approach it like evil is something God merely allows humanity to suffer, rather than something he himself suffers first and foremost, and for our sake.
people entirely underestimate the power of not paying for something when it's too expensive
I’m in a pretty terrible mood. Tell me some funny stories, you guys!
Another story, same restaurant. Most of the time, I wasn’t actually a server, I was the dishwasher (which for those of you who have never worked in a full service restaurant, means that I was the dishwasher, busboy, prep cook, fill-in line cook, bar back, janitor, and once, I shit you not, electrician).
My best friend at the time was working with me, and we were they type who could finish each other’s sentences, and we enjoyed messing with everyone’s heads by carrying on conversations while we were not in the same place. Like, I’d be at the sink, he’d be bussing tables, and we’d just carry on our half of the conversation, pausing to fill in the gaps where the other would respond… and then turn around and reply to a response that we could not, in fact, hear, but knew what would be said. One waitress actually hung by the kitchen door to verify that we were, in fact, having one conversation. We were known as Thing 1 and Thing 2.
This particular story takes place during a music festival where they blocked off a huge part of downtown and put literal concert stages in the street. We were expecting a really busy night, and had a full staff… and of course, nobody showed up. They start sending people home, including me.
I decide not to go straight home… I futz around for a bit, and realise that hey, I’m kinda hungry, and I don’t actually have much food at home, nor a whole lot of money. But if I go back to work, I can order something and charge it against my next cheque.
Meanwhile, back at work, the entire city of Birmingham has showed up at the same time. They’re slammed, and regretting sending people home. The manager tried calling me, but I wasn’t home. So he turns to Thing 2 and says “Hey, can’t reach Thing 1 at home. Do you know how to get hold of him?”
Now, Thing 2 is kind of irritated at being asked how to contact a person who isn’t home in the days before cellphones, so in complete sarcasm, he puts his fingers to his temples, acts like he’s sending a telepathic transmission, and says “He’ll be here in five minutes.” The manager takes it as the sarcasm it was intended to be… for exactly four minutes and forty-five seconds, when I walk in the door. I could see from a block away that the place was slammed, and I don’t even need to be told that I’m going Back to Work.
The hostess just dropped her jaw and was like “HOLY SHIT HE REALLY DID IT.” It’s not hard to guess reasonably close to what happened, so I just keep a straight face and say “Yep.” and walk back and get to work.
I ate seven pancakes this morning.
Yes, short stack is the small one.
Remember: in most societies, including Japan and most of Europe, you have different diets, at least in terms of portions, between rural and urban, and rural people adopt urban eating habits when they move to the city.
In America, everyone eats like a fieldhand.
And many US restaurants are based on American hospitality traditions, specifically:
No one leaves hungry.
Grandma sends you home with leftovers.
Housekeepers and Janitors Need Praise As Unsung but Very Much Important
Remember when the NRA told doctors to “stay in their lane” RE gun violence and #thisismylane trended as a result?
One of the tweets I saw was a surgeon who’d taken a picture of her OR, having just finished surgery on a young man who’d been shot. Blood. Everywhere.
This bloke retweeted her, mentioning that he worked as a cleaner in a hospital and had had to clean up stuff like this and worse.
Surgeon replied to him (and went up *greatly* in my estimation) and, despite living in different countries, thanked him for his hard work.
I can’t find the tweets sadly, but hers went something like;
“Without a clean and sterile operating room to work in, my team, our skills and the best medicines in the world are next to useless. You are doing invaluable work, without which my work would be impossible.”
I work as a nurse, and a huge amount of the care credited to us is actually certified nursing assistants, or CNAs (or “techs”). These are the folks who do a huge amount of the grunt work of cleaning up poop, changing dirty linens, feeding people, getting folks up to the chair and back to the bed, back and forth to and from the bathroom, etc, and they get paid, like, half of what we do.
I never see “CNA Appreciation Week” or “we love our CNAs” or people talking about how amazing our techs are.
God bless our CNAs. And housekeeping. And janitors, and supply staff, and sanitation workers, and all those folks doing the grunt work of making sure we’re not living in filth.
Gallus, why is everything brassica? I'm upset? How am I supposed to get a crop rotation going, in consideration of soil, climate and what this family actually eats, when everything, I can think of, is brassica? What were our ancestors thinking?
"Why are all crops Brassica?" is like asking "Why are all dogs wolves?": Because we found ONE very genetically manipulable species and pushed it into as many fun and exciting shapes as possible.
HOWEVER, Like how we also have Cats, Chickens, Horses, goats and Pigeons, we also have:
Nightshdes: Tomatoes, Potatoes, and every kind of pepper except black pepper. Like Brassicas, they need a lot of calcium, so you shouldn't put them in the same bed, and supplemmenting both beds with finely crushed eggshells will help.
Cucurbits: Summer and Winter Squashes, melons, cucumbers, Chayote, Pumpkins. Not as demanding about the calcium, do need the kind of sun that will literally Sunburn brassicas and nightshades to death.
Alliums: Garlic, Leek, Onion, Scallion. What are you doing if you don't have these???
Special shouthout here to CEREALS like Corn, Sogrhum, Wheat, oats and Barely, which *can* be grown in a backyard garden if you are insane.
BEANS: Look. There is some bean somewhere your family will like. Black beans, pinto beans, peas, lentils, chickpeas, and PEANUTS. There's also Carrots and parsnips, but they have weird sandy soil requirements so they require a similar level of dedication and research as cereals do.
And that's just vegetables! You also have "fruits" which for purposes of this post are "assorted sweet-tasting plant parts", including but not limited to:
Strawberries, blueberries, Raspberries, apples, pears, peaches, plums, currants, cranberries, and cherries all of which I've grown in my yard before.
You've also go HERBS, which are generally not related, but you can interweave them between larger crop plants to keep your biodiversity up and help prevent disease outbreaks by acting as physical barries between plants: Rosemary, Thyme, Dill, Sage, Parsley, BASIL, Savory, lemongrass, and Mint if you're nasty.
I have to believe there's a few things in each of these categories your family will eat. Look up the nutritional needs of each and you can probably swing a crop rotation schedule from there.
So many political posts I hate boil down to "I don't want to organize and work with people I hate and fight for small, incremental victories, I just want to start a revolution where everyone magically becomes an automaton who acts exactly the way I think they should act"
Like damn man, I want that too. Unfortunately I live in reality though so we're stuck with the first thing.
"Modern movements are too fractured, too aimless, with too much infighting and corruption among the leadership. What we need is a revolution, which famously never have any issues with those things" okay then. Good luck I guess
This whole line of thinking comes down to "the current systems and leadership are bad. What we need is a fresh start with only people who are good, and then all the systems will be good". Which is simply not how anything has ever worked!
"We don't have enough people, funding, and power to bring about changes through elections! We have to do an armed revolution instead which thankfully doesn't require people, funding, or power to pull off."
if you think it’s difficult getting people to agree with you now, just wait until you’ve rounded up their family and friends to the gulag, I’m sure that’ll make them much more agreeable /s
Try again, this time with God.
Emergency prayer request
My little sister, who is three months pregnant, is at the emergency room. About an hour ago she felt some cramping and was spotting. It might be nothing but we’re scared.
Our big sister is with her and her husband is on his way.
All I can do is pray.

One particularly famous passage from the Bible is that of Jesus and the young rich ruler. It is there where we get the well-known verse of how difficult it is for a rich person to enter heaven. Coupled with the Bible’s criticism of the treatment of the poor and the love of money, it has bred a disdain for the rich, and entitlement to their wealth.
However, the Bible does not support such an attitude. Jesus was not even criticizing the man’s wealth in that passage. In fact, we can see the example Jesus set for us regarding our attitudes towards the rich: “Jesus looked at him and loved him.” (Mark 10:21)
Jesus loved him.
And that is treated glibly. “Yes, yes, Jesus loved him, He loves everyone. Now, money please!” Do you treat people you love like that? Do you go up to your friends and demand them to give you things of theirs that you don’t have, or don’t have more of? Do you get upset with your friends for having more? If someone approached you with the same attitude and manner as you have towards rich people, and demanded you give them something of yours to make things fair in their eyes, would you be open to it or put off?
If the latter, perhaps Jesus’s example is not being followed. Jesus stating that it was difficult for the rich to enter heaven was not a criticism of wealth but a lament for the rich. He was lamenting the difficulty. He was lamenting how many of them would not be with Him in glory. If we are out demanding them to be good and generous people -according to our own standards- are we reflecting that lament? Or lusting after material riches? Tearing down someone out of envy?
The problem was not the man’s wealth. It was his heart. He had built for himself a treasure of material wealth, a comfortable lifestyle he could afford, and Jesus was not worth more than that.
What would you leave behind for Jesus? More importantly, what would you put in your suitcase as you packed to follow Him? The moment we say “But I need-“ how are we better than the rich man? Do we think ourselves better because we aren’t considered rich by our culture’s standards?
“But I need food, I need methods of communication, I need medical things, I need clothes-“ Did not Jesus already address this? Does God not know your needs better than you? If Jesus called you to follow Him and leave everything behind, is there no trust that He will meet those needs?
The disciples left everything, even their livelihood. Peter even reminds Jesus of this fact after the rich man leaves. If we want to consider ourselves on par with them, would we leave in the middle of our work day, on foot, with nothing on us but the clothes on our backs, if He called us? Or would we first return home to pack a bag?
Jesus loved the rich man. His command wasn’t a special command for the rich. It showed where the man’s heart was at. And it should reveal where we are. If there is something we would hold back or keep, we are more like the rich man.
Jesus loved the rich man. He did not hate or scorn him. He was not setting an income limit on heaven. He loved the rich man and wanted him to follow Him.
Do we want the same? Do we want the rich to get to heaven too, or are we rather focused on what they should be giving? Do we wish that they would desire Jesus just as much as us, or are we hoping that they become Christian so they might be convicted to get rid of their income?
If we are not doing what we would have them do, do we love them or their wealth?
If our excuse is that we do not have as much as they, then perhaps we should reflect on how we are more closely related to the rich man then the disciples. For in Acts, we see the believers, regardless of their wealth, sharing everything that they had.
If we have given up everything as the disciples, we should look to Paul’s caution: “And if I give away all my possessions to charity, and I surrender my body so that I may glory, but do not have love, it does me no good.”
Jesus loved the rich man.
Do we?
Honest-to-God question as someone who views mass immigration and illegal immigration as serious problems:
How do they access this money? Where are they getting it from (beyond "you and me, the American taxpayers!")? Is there an office you go to and fill out a form saying "I am here in America, give me my free shit"? How does one go about getting this $3874?
It's a variety.
There are whistleblowers who worked for the social security offices and were explicitly told to put every immigrant as disabled so eligible for SSDI and SSI. (SSDI is the disability and SSI is the "poor people.") There are "refugee" programs - funded by tax dollars - see Church World Services - that pay for rent/cars/etc. [https://whistleblower.org/in-the-news/the-washington-post-social-security-whistleblowers-say-they-were-sidelined-for-exposing-fines/] and [https://cwsglobal.org/press-releases/as-first-group-of-afrikaners-prepares-to-travel-to-the-united-states-cws-urges-administration-to-comply-with-court-order-to-resettle-all-conditionally-approved-refugees/] and [https://www.christiandaily.com/news/church-world-service-caught-in-ussouth-africa-visa-row-over-afrikaner-refugee-resettlement] and [https://www.wfae.org/united-states-world/2025-05-12/episcopal-church-refuses-to-resettle-white-afrikaners-citing-moral-opposition]
Until February of this year a federal rule considered it discrimination to require pay stubs for immigrants so they ALL were eligible for NINJA (No Income; No Job; No Assets) loans to buy homes/businesses. The rule was repealed in February. [https://www.forbes.com/sites/brandonkochkodin/2025/06/17/new-trump-administration-us-citizenship-test-for-sba-loans-applies-to-managers-as-well-as-owners/]
During the Biden Admin the red cross was getting refugee funding from the USG and then handing everyone pre-paid giftcards. [https://www.redcross.org/about-us/news-and-events/press-release/2024/red-cross-support-for-migrants-refugees-and-asylum-seekers-in-us.html]
None of this considers the BILLIONS in fraud perpetrated on Medicare where "sanctuary" states allow immigrants to access "free" healthcare and then bill the federal government. Or the billions discovered in Minnesota day-cares where there were no children, sometimes no staff, and millions in payments to non-existent learing centers. [https://www.msn.com/en-us/crime/general/minneapolis-daycare-owner-charged-in-alleged-4-6m-fraud-scheme/ar-AA23KVlh] and [https://www.twincities.com/2026/05/21/minnesota-fraud-new-charges-medicaid-childcare/] and [https://www.visaverge.com/news/white-house-acts-to-stop-benefit-fraud-by-noncitizens/]
Basically yes. There are multiple offices that one goes to that will give immigrants cash and loans that American taxpayers are not eligible to receive. There are additionally bad government actors that are "helping" because it advances their careers. The current administration is trying to administratively roll back as many of these policies as they can.
As to why? It depends. The Somali fraud is because they're Muslim and believe it's the jizyah - tax on non-believers. [Tiktok] For others it's the lack of morals or even the believe that they are of such high caste they are deserving of "free" stuff and should be treated superior to American citizens. [Tiktok] For the US citizens helping it's partially that they're criminals, partially that they're corrupt government officials, and partially that they believe they're racist if they don't help the invading hordes loot the treasury.
I get the impression that a large portion - perhaps most - of poor Third World nations operate under similar ideas, although they may not be expressed as concretely.
Gangs run on similar principles: you've got to protect your rep, you've got your crew that you're loyal to and if anyone disrespects them it's war and they've got to know not to fuck with us, and anything done to benefit yourself is good even if it's at the expense of society as a whole ("don't hate the player, hate the game").
They need Jesus. Seriously.
This is part of why Christians in India have a rough time. The vendetta culture is the opposite of Christian virtues like humility and forgiveness.
Christ really is the answer to this, and not just in a vague Christian religious "you just need Jeeezus!" response to everyone's woes.
The ideas of loving your neighbor as yourself (and when someone asked who counts as "your neighbor" Jesus gave the parable of the good Samaritan, showing that "your neighbor" is anyone, including members of rival ethnic or religious groups), "turn the other cheek", "go the extra mile", "everything you do, do as unto the Lord", etc., is completely antithetical to the "grab everything you can at anyone else's expense" mindset.
I absolutely hate the self-censoring of violent no-no words for many reasons. (Disrespectful of the topics, hard to filter, don't discuss dark topics if you're too scared to use dark words, stop abandoning free speech in favor of advertisers, etc) but I have an additional reason why I hate censoring the word 'shot' specifically.
How am I not supposed to think you're saying 'shit'? 'He sh*t himself' can have two VERY different meanings, y'know?!
