Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as āproblematicā in class and our professor was like, āThatās cool, but āproblematicā doesnāt really mean anything. It means that the thing youāre describing has a problem, and in and of itself thatās not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else itās not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like youāre trying to say that this is bad, but you donāt want to say ābad.ā Is that right?ā
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the ābadā thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, āIām uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.ā
Once we stopped calling things āproblematicā and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, āthatās racistā or āthatās misogynisticā or āew capitalism grossā out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, āUhhh... Iām not sure whatās so bad?ā and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I canāt help but think of this professor being like, āGood starting point, now letās get specific.ā I think when we have to commit to saying āthatās ___ā it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever weāre claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes itās art, and it should be full of problems, because thatās what art is.
i know things are hella grim in the nsfw/kink art circles especially in the last year --
but I'm hearing there's a NSFW-friendly ko-fi alternative built on atproto that's actively in the works, and being vetted by lawyers right now. as torrent-princess (OP) says, you should be able to swap out payment processors while keeping your account intact. this matters since even if stripe removes support, you'll still have a shop and all of your links intact. (ATproto is an infrastructure that bsky is built on, but is far bigger than bsky with far more opportunities.)
additionally, the Free Speech Coalition is working on a credit union specifically for adult work (including kink art) - here's the link so you can add your interest & support. Since this will be built by sex workers, there'll be far less risk of being debanked for spurious and puritanical reasons.
on a domain TLD level, there's an initiative here for a .furry domain built from the ground up by seasoned furries; it's unclear whether they'll support NSFW, but it's yet another promising turn of events for a group that's been similarly affected by censorship.
there are friends and allies out there helping to build a working parallel infrastructure. keep being vocal, keep supporting these initiatives when it's possible, and keep supporting your nsfw/kink artists. ā„

there are people who Cannot Leave. hopefully it's not the case for their whole lives but it is the case for them RIGHT NOW. and even trauma and abuse aware communities are shitassfuck bad at knowing how to be a supportive friend to these people and I find it soooo fucking frustrating. it's condescension and scolding and unrealistic standards and victim blaming and minimizing all the way fucking down .
It's so important to educate yourself about why people stay in bad situations and how to help someone who can't leave or goes back. Any sentence starting with "You should just" is bad, but "You should just leave" is one of the worst.
unhappy side effect of "morally ambiguous" being treated as the pinnacle of writing is that you will often be made to experience what a not so talented writer with big aspirations thinks is morally ambiguous

Friendly reminder that the leather flag predates almost every other flag. We owe this community to leather daddies and kinksters
In the era of corporate sanitization never forget it was leather daddies and S&M folks who protected some of the earliest pride parades.
āAlmost every other flagā is not an exaggeration. There is literally only one Pride flag older than the Leather Pride flag, and thatās the original 8-stripe (and then 6-stripe) rainbow flag.
A quick timeline:
1978: Gilbert Baker (zāāl) creates the 8-stripe Rainbow pride flag.
1979: For production reasons, the flag is reduced to the 6-stripe version most people know.
1989: Leather Pride flag created by Tony DeBlase & presented at the International Mr. Leather event on 5/28/89.
1995: International Bear Brotherhood Flag designed by Craig Byrnes. Introduced at the Chesapeake Bay āBears of Summerā events in July 1995.
1995: Red/black/blue polyamory flag with yellow pi symbol debuted by Jim Evans.
1998: Bi Pride flag created by Michael Page. He introduces it at BiCafeās first anniversary party on 12/5/98.
1999: Monica Helms creates the Transgender Pride flag. She debuts it the next year at a Pride parade in Arizona.
2010: AVEN creates a flag to represent the organization. It is later used as the ace pride flag for the community as a whole.
2010: Jasper V. creates the pan pride flag. This Pride flag debuted on Tumblr!
2011: Marilyn Roxie designs the genderqueer flag.
2012: JJ Poole debuts the Genderfluid flag.
2013: The Intersex Pride flag is created by Morgan Carpenter of Intersex Human Rights Australia.
2014: Kye Rowan introduces their creation, the non-binary flag.

So itās pretty clear that the Leather flag has been an accepted symbol within the queer community for years - and in some cases decades - before more recently-designed flags. This isnāt a case of the flag being ābetterā or whatever, but itās kind of undeniable that yes - the Leather community and the queer community have always been undeniably entangled.
The attempts the community is making to distance itself from leatherfolk continue to REALLY bother me.

don't present androgynously
use "binary" pronouns in any capacity
identify partially with a binary gender
have a "gendered" name
don't experience body dysmorphia

DO experience gender dysphoria/body dysmorphia but aren't sure what gender or body would suit them
just experience body/gender apathy instead
can't be open about their gender identity yet
you're all absolutely valid.
don't ever feel like you're "not nonbinary enough" because you absolutely are! š
