I'm running a pride event for trans people with a transmasc acquaintance. They've written a quiz for the event about queer history. In one of the questions, referencing a period in history pre-dating the terms "trans women/men", they refer to trans women as "crossdressers" and trans men as "trans men".

I've had to call attention to this in the most convoluted way, going out of my way to thank them profusely for their efforts, positive emojis etc etc, pointing out bits I specifically liked, and only then drawing attention to the issue with this one question. I have to point it out as if it's a minor issue, I have to pretend it was an understandable mistake, I have to let them save face by saying "I'm sure you didn't mean it that way". I have to suggest an alternative to give them an easy fix where they don't have to think. Then I have to thank them again and end the message on a high.

Then I have to patiently listen to their nonsensical excuses, and thank them again for changing the text of their quiz. Then write another appeasing message that characterises their transmisogyny as understandable.

And after all this shit I have had to do because a non-transfem wrote some transmisogynistic nonsense, it is me who is left riddled with anxiety. Because every time I call out something like this, even if I am as meek about it as possible, I am rolling the dice as to whether I will end up being smeared as an unreasonable bully and kicked out of this group (which might be a blessing honestly atp).

It often feels like transmisogyny is 10% abuse and 90% consequences for drawing attention to that abuse. "When you expose a problem you pose a problem" indeed, thank you Sara Ahmed for giving me the language to describe this shit 🙏

This is too soft handed. I would've handled this differently. Yeah, I agree, there will be consequences for drawing attention to abuse; however, being the kind of person I am, I'd inevitably ensure it becomes a far bigger problem for them than it does for me. You want results, don't be placative, be fierce. Call up your friends and tell them to call up their friends and those friends of friends to call up their friends, get on your local discord group and tell them all about the situation and tell them all to come and tell a few of them to be ready. Once everyone is in place, then bring up the issue, not in a placative manner, in an assertive manner. Your place is not begging at their feet. It is demanding the dead and elderly trans women be respected and honored, not erased through patriarchal ciswashing. Declare that you will not diminish them for anyone's sake and that they are in the wrong for giving even this inch to the transphobes.

Just remember, if you're looking for a god and you're queer, you don't have to go with what's popular amongst the cishets. There's plenty of based af gods that have gotten lost in the woodworks that have way more personality than the mainstream gods of Christianity, Islam and Judaism. Here are a few:

Loki — This genderfluid god literally endured the pain of a goat biting and latching onto his testicles just to get a goddess to laugh from the ensuing chaos of the whole ordeal. He also transformed into a mare on one occasion just to get knocked up and give birth to an eight legged horse named Sleipnir for no other reason than to ride up on it to crash a wedding ceremony. Inanna — Gender expectations? What are those? This incredibly ambitious goddess of war, sex, love, beauty, dance, and transformations breaks all the rules. A goddess of contradictions by her very birth, she's held as the Queen of Heaven and Earth by the Sumerians and has what by today's standards would be considered transgender high priestesses (ush-ku) serving at her temples. “Love Languages” are just common couples therapy techniques mangled and repackaged by an unqualified homophobe. Relationships generally need all 5 love languages to be fulfilled, which is to say, everybody needs to communicate with, spend time with, and do things for their partners, and that’s got nothing to do with any special way you communicate affection.

MBTI has been proven completely ineffective at predicting anyone’s success at a particular job, and half the people who take it twice will get different results. Reputable psychologists do not recognize it, and the company that owns the rights to it uses it to scam people. People don’t adhere to strict binaries in basically anything. Very few people are going to be exclusively introverted or extroverted. It’s just astrology repackaged as pseudoscience. Shockingly enough, you can’t boil the complexity of the human experience down to a dozen Types of Guy.

The concept of IQ is flawed from the start— “intelligence” is an abstract concept that encompasses many different skills, from social intelligence to emotional intelligence to the very narrow kind of problem solving intelligence IQ tests generally measure for. It cannot predict how fast you learn, how much you know, or how logical and well read you are. It mostly measures how good you are at solving puzzles. Coincidentally, it’s also a pretty good predictor of income and education level, take a guess why. Most people’s IQ will change throughout their lives, because it’s inconsistent bullshit we’ve only held onto this long because we’re still kinda hoping we can breed the ubermensch. IQ tests and the way they attempt to categorize people are explicitly eugenicist and racist.

BMI was developed by a man known as the grandfather of eugenics, who first of all was a mathematician, not a doctor, and second never intended the formula to be used to categorize individuals. It’s intended to give a rough estimate of obesity in populations, and it’s not even good at that. It hangs around because of fatphobia and insurance companies who want it as an excuse to charge fat people more.

The study which determined people’s prefrontal cortex was still developing at 25… stopped measuring at 25. Evidence suggests your brain probably never stops developing. Stop infantilizing grown adults. This is a branch off from the larger mess of misinformation surrounding fMRIs.

If you haven’t put together what all these things have in common yet, here’s the moral of the story: STOP TRYING TO CATEGORIZE PEOPLE. STOP TRYING TO PUT PEOPLE IN A GODDAMN BIOLOGICAL HIERARCHY. EUGENICS IS BAD, AND WILL ALWAYS BE BAD, NO MATTER WHO’S DOING IT.

I also in that same article condemned using that as a measuring stick for determining someone's maturity because it's ableist by its very nature.
