microphone pointed at u. tumblr user spliqi name ur top 5 yuri manga and the poser elite 4 don't count. (bonus just for fun— nichest yuri u are crazy about)
@blackwaves
okay so this is technically not five nor are they in any particular order bc I could NOT narrow down them down further but. here are my favorites.
(disclaimer that i’m not saying these are a top 5 of objectively the best art or writing or whatever but they are the most stand-out to Me personally and the ones i had the most fun with. dog with propeller hat and spiral lollipop .png)
⚠️also mandatory mild spoiler warning for the series discussed below. i have to promote them somehowww
My Top (Not) 5 Yuri Manga:
The Moon on a Rainy Night (ongoing)
themes: music, disability, queer struggles
this shit is torture. it is agony. it is peak. i skimmed it to find the panels for this post and now i’m gonna start it again from the beginning because i need to re-experience them. closeted lesbian piano student x former piano prodigy who had to quit music after she lost her hearing. there are so many moments where my stomach dropped and my heart ached because it’s so real and raw in a way not many stories are these days. there is also so much care put into the portrayal of kanon’s hearing impairment.
this is the 3rd highest rated GL series on myanimelist so you know i’m being dead serious. butt to butt with bloom into you (and it’s so much better. don’t tell the trad himejoshis i said this)
great art great story great angst. slow burn. delicious one-sided pining until it isn’t!!
Catch These Hands! (completed)
themes: comedy, rivals to lovers
this manga is so stupid i love it so much. what would you do if you were an ex-highschool delinquent who ran into your #1 rival you could never beat years after graduation just to find out she only got into fighting to get close to you.
they are so dumb. they are so entertaining. this is more of a light-hearted read but still has a good message about self acceptance. i enjoyed
Literally Anything By Sal Jiang
the mother of toxic yuri. giving her a section as a mangaka instead bc i can’t chose a fav from her works. if you love lesbians who are crazy and weird and very much idiots this is the author for you.
if you look at them fundamentally her stories aren’t that funny and are intense psychological dramas but they literally are pure comedy simply bc nothing justifies how insane these characters are. like what part of hating your coworker at your office job gets you here:
(source: Black and White: Tough Love at the Office, completed)
and all this girl did was leave a hate comment on her instagram live btw:
(source: Wicked Spot, ongoing)
was it ever that serious 😭😭😭😭
so if you like bizarrely intense coworker rivalries or social media influencer x internet hater or popular girl x nerd girl beef you will find your place here with me. also sal jiang very obviously has a thing for light and dark hair duos, lol.
my header on my blog homepage is from wicked spot !! if we pretend literally anyone cares
There Is No Love Wishing On A Star (completed)
themes: heavy angst, childhood friends to lovers, love triangles (handled well), not actually unrequited love
almost finished this one rn and i have to recommend it from the twenty-something chapters i’ve read so far. the artstyle is beautiful. it is devastating. the side love interests of both characters are developed in such a way that you can’t just write them off. eri is a comphet warrior the likes of which you have never seen. i need someone to talk to about this story and fast.
in summary: girl unaware of her gay feelings gets into a straight relationship with a guy she doesn’t love x girl all too aware of her gay feelings gets into rebound lesbian relationship. zoo wee mama
How Do We Relationship? (completed)
themes: queer struggles, young adulthood, college/university
the most popular and well-known title on this list, and it’s popular for a reason. take it from someone who’s usually an established relationship hater: i LOVE this series. one of the only stories with the trope i’ve read that still maintains conflict and drama in such a good realistic way. relevantly: it deals with many relationship problems and incompatibilities and dynamics in a super evocative manner while not forgetting that they’re lesbian relationships thrown into the mix. you will probably see people online talking about this manga like that one patrick star campfire meme because. yeah.
i will defend this manga til my last breath. turns out i am in fact a sucker for the cliché most popular “princess” of the school being obsessed with a loser otaku trope if said loser is a woman. it has a fun retro manga artstyle but even if you’re not a fan of that the depth of the relationships between the characters more than makes up for it. this is also one of the few series i own the physicals of (<3)
+++ it’s home to this infamous panel:
Bonus: Two Niche Titles I Love
i’m basing this off of their ranking on MAL i genuinely have no idea what niche things i read bc 99% of yuri aren’t spoken about online lmao 💀💀
7 Days Limited Girlfriend (completed)
themes: fake(ish) dating, coming of age, equal mix of romcom and drama
a fairly new release, gorgeous artstyle. gyaru x honor student. in particular i love how this author was not afraid to give the female characters awkwardness and ridiculous cartoonish expressions that are normally reserved for male characters. they are so silly and their story was very cute and resolved very nicely. big recommend!
The Lying Bride and The Same-Sex Marriage Debate (completed)
themes: heteronormativity, queer struggles
by the same author as netsuzou trap who clearly enjoys it when women leave their male partners for other women. in this story she did not shy away from talking about the experiences of gay people in japan. i also love how brazen the mc is about her identity as a gay woman. she lets one of her old coworkers she used to have a crush on stay at her apartment after the breakdown of her marriage and their relationship develops from there ………….
the end. i hope at least one person finds something from this they end up loving 🩷 i’m always picking up new stuff (argh) so ask me again in a month and this list will probably be completely different bahahaha. kill me
please read this even if you're not indian. especially if you're not indian.
you've seen the jokes. india is "dirty", indians are "everywhere", why don't they fix their own country. ok. let me tell you why, and what's happening right now while nobody's watching.
first, the history you skipped: britain ruled india for two centuries and drained it. economist utsa patnaik's research estimates around $45 trillion in today's money was taken. the india that got independence in 1947 was one of the poorest countries on earth. every "why is india like this" question starts there. you don't get to profit off a robbery and then mock the crime scene.
now, what's happening RIGHT NOW:
in may the question paper for NEET leaked. that's the national medical entrance exam. over 2.2 million students took it. cancelled. years of studying, families' savings poured into coaching, gone overnight because someone sold the paper. students died by suicide after. these were kids who wanted to be doctors.
and out of that came a protest movement. a gen z group called the cockroach janta party, started by a 30 year old named abhijeet dipke, got 22 million instagram followers within DAYS. they've been doing a sit-in at jantar mantar in delhi demanding education minister dharmendra pradhan resign.
and then there's sonam wangchuk. if you've watched 3 idiots, he's the real engineer the character was based on. built solar schools in ladakh. invented ice stupas so himalayan villages have water. spent his whole life on education. he's 59 and he's been on hunger strike for 17+ days now. reporters went to see him this week and he was too weak to talk. and the troll armies are calling him "anti national" and "foreign funded". a man starving himself for other people's children. that's the thing here, anyone who asks a question is suddenly a traitor.
it's not one incident, it's everywhere you look:
• infrastructure worth thousands of crores failing within months of the ribbon cutting. tunnels collapsing in regions where heavy rain is a guarantee, not a surprise.
• youth unemployment near 10% for ages 15 to 29, 13.6% in cities. in a country of 1.42 billion where more than half the population is young.
• only about the top 3% of indians earn above 10 lakh a year. meanwhile billionaire wealth keeps ballooning and the headlines celebrate it.
• manipur burned for over two years. an ethnic conflict, tens of thousands displaced, and the prime minister barely said the word manipur while it happened.
• journalists raided. critics' houses bulldozed. activists sitting in jail for years without trial under laws like UAPA. our press freedom ranking has cratered.
• even the petrol is a fight now, ethanol blending pushed through while drivers complain about their engines and get no straight answers.
and through all of it, the PM, who came to power on religious polarisation (americans, sound familiar?), travels abroad for photo ops and has not held one single open press conference in over a decade. not one.
what i'm asking:
if you're not indian: share this. our media mostly won't cover any of it because the big outlets are owned by the same billionaires the government serves. the only reason wangchuk's fast is getting any coverage is people refusing to look away.
if you ARE indian: speak up even if you're comfortable. especially if you're comfortable. join the protests. add to this, correct me, translate it. staying quiet is a choice when nothing in this post touches your life.
india is not "dirty". india was robbed, and it's being robbed again, from the inside this time. but it's also the country where a 59 year old will starve for strangers' kids and 22 million young people will rally behind a party literally named after cockroaches, because cockroaches survive everything.
SHAKE AROUND THAT PATHETIC WOMAN. PUT HER IN A BLENDER. THROW HER AT A WALL. CHEW ON HER. IM TIRED OF YOUR MEN ITS TIME TO TOSS AROUND YOUR GIRL BLORBO LETS GOOOO
"Dogwhistles" are called that based on real "dog whistles", many of which are pitched too high to be audible to most humans, but are still perfectly audible to dogs.
Rhetorical dogwhistles are things that most people would not be able to identify as bigoted because they're INTENDED to have plausible deniability.
The wording changes are meant to be subtle enough that people really can mix them up accidentally when they don't have much information!
So when the gender critical movement calls trans women "transwomen", they're hoping for 2 things.
this usage will spread enough among people who don't know any better, to give transphobes the plausible deniability of not LOOKING like a frothing bigot constantly.
the usage grammatically places trans women in a different category than other women; it's changing "trans" from an adjective to part of a noun to make this distinction.
The more we can avoid this usage, the less deniability have transmisogynists have when using it, and the less rhetorical ground we cede to the degendering and misgendering of trans women.
I don't actually think ceding this ground is LESS divisive than pointing it out politely.
when i think about cheng my heart hurts so much my poor babyyy i really dont understand how could that BITCH shao yanyuan could abandon her son like that????disgusting.

tragic yaoi ships always got to have the white one who is really sad and the black one who is really sad
i think it's really great that we've associated any and all feminism that is even a smidge deeper than "women are so hecking cool" with white cis american women. I think it's awesome that I basically always have to be on guard for being called white whenever I post about misogyny being a real, observable societal force that impacts my life and lives of all women every fucking day and not, as popular perception would tell you, a vague, ill-defined concept that has no real bearing or impact on our existence. I'm so glad misogyny is recognized among self-proclaimed leftists as a lesser oppression, something that is only ever taken seriously by evil privileged white woman. and of course this all has nothing to do with how we interact with and treat feminists of color or transfeminists or feminists not from the imperial core and all the other additionally marginalized feminist women.
Like unironically we should be subsidising at least 50% of their educations. What do you mean we have a shortage of doctors we should have surplus. What do you mean they’re being overworked they should be treated like royalty, they can fix human bodies
I don’t care if some of them are only doing it for the money. I don’t care if all of them are only doing it for the money. Intentions don’t matter to the stitches in my nana’s leg or the ten billion other lifesaving treatments we all get at a detriment to their finances and mental wellbeing. Entire cities are kept alive by just a couple thousand of them what are we DOINGGGGG
If we had more, maybe it would be easier to get the shitty ones fucking replaced. The board isn't going to do much to the only endocrinologist in the state who takes Medicaid, you know? But if there were more than, idk, maybe 5? Maybe then?
to be honest i think there’s a large number of people who conflate the very real and widespread phenomenon that women tend to be written off as just mothers or love interests in order to diminish their importance in a given story with the fact that a huge reason they’re sent to narrative purgatory in this way is BECAUSE the labels of “mother” and “girlfriend/wife” are systematically devalued and seen as inherently inferior because they’re terms that have been associated with ownership and/or control over women. like the amount of people who’ve told me that a certain female character is uninteresting or badly written because she happened to have a kid or be a man’s girlfriend or sister just to find out she was actually fleshed out very well and carried significant narrative importance frustrates me soo bad. there’s a huge problem with how those roles (specifically “wife” and “mother”) are systematically devalued and yet also perpetuated as the only viable options for women to achieve their societal roles in the patriarchy but acknowledging the devaluation of those labels to begin with is an important discussion in itself.
