ironically its in a book about female sex anatomy that ive come across it (Vagina Obscura by Rachel E. Gross). everyone only wants to focus on the secondary sex characteristics and not the bazillion other functions of estrogen, testosterone, and co.

NO IT DOESNT Im just referring to it in my head as my whiteward au at the moment
and YES. I love to yap and it’s faster than drawing. here’s some of the premise I’m spinning in my head
the current idea is that hornet notices that the underworks have chugged back to life recently and that the power they’re generating has to be going somewhere.
That somewhere is whiteward. which she finds out in the worst way possible when she goes to investigate and gets attacked, subdued, and wakes up tied to a table.
the whiteward doctors need silk. hornet produces silk. I’m sure you can see where this is going, but to put the pieces together: she gets stuck there for a day or two while strange bugs siphon and yank her silk out from under her shell
its horrible and it hurts so much-
(I’m enjoying how the citadel sees other bugs as a resource that it both can and has the right to exploit. can you tell)
meanwhile the sentinel up in the choral chambers has been mended by hornet enough times now that a not insignificant proportion of the silk spooled under their metal shell is hers.
(they feel. normal. about that)
silk is soul. and that soul is hornets
thus: the sentinel feels it when hornet starts to scream.
they follow the burning, tugging draw in their limbs to where they find her: strapped to a table, bled dry of silk, and limp and cold in their hands as they pull her to their chest.
BAD. BAD TIME FOR EVERYONE
and then the sentinel realises that they don’t know how to get out
thusly commences the severely nerfed wandering around whiteward as they try to a) LEAVE. PROMPTLY. and b) find what/whoever captured hornet in the first place
hornet wants to question them. the sentinel wants to eviscerate them. nobody is having fun and they both find out a lot more about the medical history of pharloom than they ever wanted to
other stuff: hornet was divested of her cloak and all her traps upon capture, but she gets them back in short order after a little bit of searching and a little bit of murder.
her silk doesn’t come back for a long time longer though. so no healing, no spells, death is permanent
im toying with the idea of having the silk spider cloaked thingies be infesting the area so that the sentinel is more at risk and to stop hornet from being able to regenerate any silk before it’s ripped away again
hornet is VERY wobbly after she wakes up again and has to lean on the sentinel a lot
if the sentinel had a face they would be smiling reassuringly the whole time, but as soon as hornet looks away there is murder behind their eyes
hornets got that reserve bind stashed away. This is a surprise tool that will help us later
I’ve got to figure out where I want to go with it, and this will probably change if/as I figure more stuff out, but that’s the gist of it! hope it was helpful :]

Those readers (who, in my observations, have always been readers and not other writers) have learned a tiny checklist of surface features and now feel deputized to “spot AI,” but they’re often reading for “gotcha” signals rather than reading for prose. That’s a very different skill, and they don’t have it. Noticing an em dash isn’t the same as understanding non-essential clauses. Noticing a sentence fragment isn’t the same thing as understanding why a fragment lands. A hammer can see nails all day long, but that doesn’t make it an architect.
tl;dr the AI Witchfinders need to read more books above the 6th grade level before they start pointing fingers at experienced writers.
I perhaps have too many ideas for a Grace, Rocky, and Stratt in Starfleet AU (completely inspired by the realization that 40 Eridani houses both Vulcans and Eridians).
Bullet pointed ideas are going to be below a read more because I fear the length
- Grace teaches upper level biology at Starfleet Academy
- Captain Stratt of the USS Hail Mary is hanging around with some fellow captains and admirals and such
- Grace is getting into a heated debate with a fellow professor about biology (as he does)
- Stratt is just like-- "That one. That's my new XO."
- The poor admirals try to tell her but you know what Stratt is like on a mission
- Now every time they go on landing missions she's stuck with a partner who Will Contact Chief Engineer Rocky the Eridian for transport whenever there's danger
- This man will do everything possible to not get Red Shirted
- despite never wearing a red shirt but whatever
- She takes the cowardice with the competence
- Grace got headhunted for the Mary and didn't even realize he was XO for like-- a week and a half.
- don't ask him how. He was mortified when he found out.
- "Man it's kinda cool being part of the science team on a ship"
- someone else: "yeah, you get to be Chief Science Officer AND Second in command!"
- ". . . I'm what and what."
- "Strattttttt people think I'm? Your XO?"
- "That is correct"

- " . . . The engineer? The engineer that spends 80% of his time in the vents . . ?"
- anyway the first month of their mission is chaos.
- the Eridians and Vulcans may be nextdoor neighbors planet wise
- but they both hiss at each other whenever they get too close

- the only thing they agree on is music.
- Rocky and Grace become fast friends obviously
- Rocky is charmed by Grace constantly asking to be Beamed Up
- Grace finds himself in the vents when too many people try to talk to him
- I think they have a lot of fun trying to get Grace to learn Eridian without universal translator
- Also I just need y'all to imagine Rocky in his shirt from the books but like-- as a red Starfleet uniform
- let's also just handwave away the need for different atmospheres
- anyway this is like already half-way to becoming a fic and a plot
- but like--
- time is not on my side.
