Copyright class actions could financially ruin AI industry, trade groups say.
AI industry groups are urging an appeals court to block what they say is the largest copyright class action ever certified. They’ve warned that a single lawsuit raised by three authors over Anthropic’s AI training now threatens to “financially ruin” the entire AI industry if up to 7 million claimants end up joining the litigation and forcing a settlement.

!!!SIGNAL BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOST!!!
I'm back bitches!
My account was terminated earlier today for no reason. I hadn't even posted in days.
After talking with some other moots and their moots who were banned at the same time, turns out there's a fun pattern!
1. All of us are trans women or otherwise TMA
2. All of us had just followed the account of another TMA user who just made a new account.
Even for tumblr this is so fucking obviously retaliatory.
None of this is new, tumblr has been banning transfems for no reason for a while now.
All of you who made a fuss about the note changes the other day? Start fussing about the discriminatory moderation of this site for fucks sakes. Its an actually serious issue and IT HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR YEARS
And I haven't even mentioned the racism. If you care AT ALL about trans women and trans/queer POC then reblog this post, reblog the other countless posts from other folx, send support tickets, actually SHOW THAT YOU GIVE A FUCK about more than the note counts on your posts.
i need bucky barnes to hold me in his arms and whisper in my ear that everything will be okay
The thing that I find most annoying about signs in store windows advertising that they're welcoming to LGBT or that they accept everybody is that I really just assume that anyway. The sign is literally just a virtue signal and it's not there for any other reason, because every store is supposed to be open to the public by default. I would think it goes without saying you're not going to turn away a black person or someone wearing religious garb or a gay couple that walked in holding hands. If you did, word would get out immediately and you'd be in trouble. The signs are really a turn-off tbh because they're just so dumb.
It's like a restaurant putting up a "My cooks won't spit in your food!" sign.
If I was walking past a store with a sign that said "immigrants welcome!" my first thought would be "what did they do to suggest that they weren't welcome?", because why would you need to specifically tell members of a specific group they can walk in and buy things, that they can do what you want as many people as possible to be doing because that's how stores work, unless there was some reason for them to think they couldn't or shouldn't? That's the vibe it gives off.
The only sign of this type that’s actually telling people any new information are the “we speak [non-English] language] come on in” in the non-English language. There’s some auto shops in my area that list three or four languages, and obviously a shop advertising some ethnic treat or shampoo or whatever in a non English language says “immigrants we got the stuff you missed from home”. Like, that’s the real, non virtue signaling way for a store to communicate “immigrants welcome”.
That said, I have seen gay flags on shop doors where it really did mean something; gun shops aren’t default assumed to be gay friendly, and it’s not a zero cost move to openly announce a gun shop is gay friendly.
Sometimes it’s a “we don’t spit in your food” sign and sometimes it’s a “we are nut-free” sign, you know? It’s contextual.
this is huge actually
I used to think like this, but then Lauri Carleton was murdered. It's actually extremely brave to announce your support for a marginalized group in an era of increasing hate crimes and gun violence.
Lauri Carleton was shot and killed in August 2023 following a dispute over a Pride flag outside her Lake Arrowhead shop.
As a lesbian myself I hard agree with prev:
#as a gay person i actually like seeing pride flags on businesses bc i know that if i go in there with my girlfriend#im not going to get bizarre attitude or hostility from the people who work there#which is not necessarily a given! some people will take your money while treating you horribly and its bad!
Being able to see these as purely "virtue signaling" means you've had the privilege to only live in places where support is assumed, which is not everywhere. In more hostile environments, it's very heartening to see that if you are in a group that can't be sure of that. And as this article shows, it's not like people who put those signs up are not assuming risk!
I'm so tired of this very insular Tumblr attitude that is so disdainful of allyship, assuming it must always be performative and fake - when allies have often been a (sometimes quite literal) lifeline for marginalized groups throughout history. It shows how much people who say these things live in a bubble, at a complete removal from anyone who has lived lives unlike their own, presently or currently. Go to a small town in a red state, you sheltered children. Or at least just like, leave the Internet once in a while, since I'm sure that is the real issue with a lot of people who make these posts.
Being able to see these as purely "virtue signaling" means you've had the privilege to only live in places where support is assumed, which is not everywhere.
I live in one of the bluest areas in the US and these kind of signs are still absolutely necessary. Because the assholes are all around like fungal spores and it can be the difference between them shutting up and fucking off or taking root and becoming regulars and inviting all their asshole friends.
Yeah as a trans lesbian living in Sask its relieving when places have that up, because its kinda the norm to not be treated well. Places doing that place themselves at risk to an extent. My uni regularly had nazi vandalization of our pride walk, theres a pretty famous video of a guy harassing volunteers who were painting the pride walk on broadway a few years back, and Ive heard of other instances around town. It has risk attached. It also makes me comfortable going places with my girlfriend, it makes me know staffs probably not going to harass us or stand by when I get called slurs in front of them(has happened many times usually when Im alone) or some weird transphobe in Harry Potter merch stalks me through a store(happened twice, the second time security of their own accors stopped the stalker just from how weird they were being following me). Its super helpful when medical places show it because discrimination is common, thankfully the pharmacy my gf and I go to has a really supportive staff, they display and wear pride flags and then back it up with how they support trans people going there for HRT. Sure a flag can be performative but not here, not when you can get harassed for it, not when its relatively uncommon. This reminds me of the people who whine about pronoun circles and other things and it tells me they've never lived somewhere thats norm isnt being queer supportive.

I know people on tumblr looove stories of underwater cave diving, but I haven't seen anyone talk about nitrogen narcosis aka "raptures of the deep"
basically when you want to get your advanced scuba certification (allowing you to go more than 60 feet deep) you have to undergo a very specific test: your instructor takes you down past the 60+ foot threshold, and she brings a little underwater white board with her.
she writes a very basic math problem on that board. 6 + 15. she shows it to you, and you have to solve it.
if you can solve it, you're good. that is the hardest part of the test.
because here's what happens: there is a subset of people, and we have no real idea why this happens only to them, who lose their minds at depth. they're not dying, they're not running out of oxygen, they just completely lose their sense of identity when deep in the sea.
a woman on a dive my instructor led once vanished during the course of the excursion. they were diving near this dropoff point, beyond which the depth exceeded 60 feet and he'd told them not to go down that way. the instructor made his way over to look for her and found a guy sitting at the edge of the dropoff (an underwater cliff situation) just staring down into the dark. the guy is okay, but he's at the threshold, spacing out, and mentally difficult to reach. they try to communicate, and finally the guy just points down into the dark, knowing he can't go down there, but he saw the woman go.
instructor is deep water certified and he goes down. he shines his light into the dark, down onto the seafloor which is at 90 feet below the surface. he sees the woman, her arms locked to her sides, moving like a fish, swimming furiously in circles in the pitch black.
she is hard to catch but he stops her and checks her remaining oxygen: she is almost out, on account of swimming a marathon for absolutely no reason. he is able to drag her back up, get her to a stable depth to decompress, and bring her to the surface safely.
when their masks are off and he finally asks her what happened, and why was she swimming like that, she says she fully, 100% believed she was a mermaid, had always been a mermaid, and something was hunting her in the dark 👍
The ocean is scary.
I don't like people who actually "baby talk" to human babies. That's a person who's supposed to learn how to speak properly one day, and you're not helping by being nonsensical. These same people find it funny when you talk to a baby like you'd talk to any other person, and some of them get insulted when you baby talk to animals. I'm not the one talking to a dog like it's a baby, you're the one talking to a baby like it's a dog.
Wild animals, however, need to be addressed formally, like a person that you don't know. Because that's what they are, and you're not supposed to be familiar with them. And if one is familiar with you, that's the way you respond. Like sir. Sir what are you doing. There's nothing in my pockets for you. This is my yard and you are trespassing. Please leave.
it's very important that you're friends with furries and trannies and faggots and freaks and perverts it's good for your soul
reblorg if you're a furry, a tranny, a faggot, a freak and/or a pervert!
Love how tumblr has its own folk stories. Yeah the God of Arepo we’ve all heard the story and we all still cry about it. Yeah that one about the woman locked up for centuries finally getting free. The woman who raised the changeling alongside her biological child

Blind people must save a lot on electricity.
They do actually!
I had a blind professor, last semester, and I swung through his office to make up an exam. It was a while before I knew he was in there because he was sitting with the lights off. I finally went in, apologized, and took the exam by the light of a nearby window (which was fine). Forty-five minutes into dead silence he panicked and yelled in this booming voiced, “WAIT, YOU CAN SEE!!!” before diving across his desk to turn on the lights. I’m sure he was embarrassed but I thought it was endearing and it highlighted a large aspect of disabled life that I hadn’t previously considered.
You know technology literacy is dying because I saw this meme with 76k likes
F11 the full screen button? You’re scared of the full screen button? F10?? It opens the menu bar???
Computers are so scary what if I accidentally hit F12 in a steam game and it takes a screenshot. What if I press shift + F12 while in word and accidentally save my document 😖
If you had to learn what the F keys on your computer do through me reblogging this post, then I'm glad you did. Computer literacy is not a skill that gets taught anymore, and it is absolutely one that needs to be taught in order to be learned. Don't ever feel bad for not knowing something, but ☝️ don't ever stop learning learning about your environment, the tools you use, and especially the people around you

this is your periodic reminder that for all the artifacts and errors and "tells" one could possibly list, the only reliable way to actually determine if an image is ai generated is to investigate the source. it is becoming increasingly common for "fake classical paintings" to circulate around curative aesthetic blogs, and everyone should be using this as an opportunity to not only exercise their investigative skills but also appreciate art more in general. you're all checking out the artists you reblog, right? 🫣
so what are some signs to look for? let's use this very good example.
