Collins is gone.
Namaygoosisagagun First Nation/Collins has burned to the ground. The entire community is nothing but ashes after being quickly consumed by wildfires. They did not have any support from emergency services, and no one offered aid. The community saved themselves by escaping into boats because no one came.
Mishkeegogamang and Cat Lake have lost power. Families are ending up in shelters with nothing. Armstrong, Lac La Croix, Whitesand, Gull Bay, Lac des Mille Lacs are currently in the fires path and all members are being evacuated.
All this loss, all this devastation, and it was entirely preventable.
After steadily underfunding wildland firefighting and purposefully excluding Indigenous wildland firefighters and Indigenous wildfire organizations from wildfire operations, firefighter training, decisionmaking, and resource exchanges, in 2025, Doug Ford slashed the forest firefighting budget.
It's hard to ignore his decision to cut funding and leave us out of adequate fire training (even though we've lived with forest fires for thousands of years—far longer than settlers have been in Canada—and made sure fires like the ones we're all seeing today were prevented through kinisitotēn) when, despite making up less than 5% of the population, we account for 42% percent of all wildfire evacuations in Canada.
And when we are successfully evacuated, we face discrimination and racism—like Kashechewan—because it's always been easier to blame us than it is to blame the true culprit: denialism, corportate greed, and colonization.
The people of Collins and every other impacted community deserve better.
Right now, the AFN is currently accepting donations to help Collins First Nation. If you're able to, please consider donating.
ONWA (Ontario Native Women's Association) is another great place to donate to. They have outreach vans going to motels and inns and offering food, water, resources, and cultural support to those impacted by the wildfires.
Other places to consider donating to are Mikinakoos Emergency Fund, Red Cross, True North Aid, Indigenous Climate Action. You can also send donations directly to Whitesand First Nation via e-transfer ([email protected]) and they request that you add your full name in the e-transfer comment section to receive a tax receipt.
*Before sending money, verify that the appeal appears on an official First Nation, Tribal Council or registered charity channel.

like could definitely be considered a form of repressed lesbianism, but in fiction I'm better acquainted with the variety in which the character is actively lying to themself, refusing to acknowledge it internally, etc. and I really enjoy this variant of like. she's making a conscious, strategic, calculated decision, but part of that involves maintaining a careful, intellectual distance from her own desires.
from a writing perspective I am also really impressed by the ability to get this across in the aforementioned homoerotic situations without resorting to what is a go-to shorthand for myself and many other writers, descriptions of bodily responses that the character attempts to ignore/resist. it communicates that level of detachment soooo well and I think it takes a lot of skill to create these fraught situations and have what is actually fraught about them be expressed almost tacitly.
also just personally I feel very Seen by her visceral reaction to considering actually being with a man, even for purely strategic reasons. the bit about her body rejecting the concept. in that I know a lot of other lesbians who are in the realm of like "I could do it for a while if necessary even if it's not what I actually want out of life" but for me it has always been an instant discomfort that I can't overcome, which was present in various forms even when I thought I wanted a boyfriend etc.
I also think it's very successful at communicating lesbianism that is both relational and individual, which I think is how many/most people experience it! fictional narratives frequently focus on falling in love with a single person as the locus of Awakening, which I think is partly just because it's easy to write—and if you have a ready-made partner you can accelerate the timeline a bit because either you have someone to guide you or you have someone to take the journey with. but for many people it's not about being interested in a single person at all; it's about your own responses and desires, an internal understanding of yourself that is about who and what you want, but not in the sense of a specific person.
my personal pet peeve vis a vis grace atticwife posting isn't actually anything to do with the posts or au itself, that's all fine, it's just that the way fandom currently uses the term "atticwife" appears to have mostly divorced itself from what The Wife In The Attic actually represents in jane eyre and that Personally ticks me off in a gothic nerd way. I think fandom currently uses it as a shorthand to basically mean "a beloved imprisoned in a gilded cage," while in jane eyre it's more "living reminder of something horrific the hero has done and is still doing that he's trying to hide from the heroine." I hear "ryland grace atticwife au" and imagine adrian as the jane eyre in the situation, cautiously asking their spouse "...by the way, what, uh. happened. to that alien you brought back home? it was a big deal at the time but it's been years and I haven't heard anything more about it" and rocky saying "oh, well humans have such short life spans and high medical needs, it's basically just on palliative care for the time being, don't worry. also the banging on the biodome is the air vents, pay it no mind." or I imagine stratt hiring a new young staff member as an assistant when the beetles come back to earth and them realizing that there are weird cuts in the video logs sometimes, and their boss keeps redirecting conversation when they try to bring up the circumstances of the original launch around other people, and no matter how hard they try they can't find copies of ryland grace's informed consent paperwork when everything else related to project hail mary is so meticulously and publicly archived. but, alas, this is not what other people mean.

You should be starting a recipe book. I don't give a shit if you're only 20-years-old. The modern web is rotting away bit by bit before our very eyes. You have no idea when that indie mom blog is going down or when Pinterest will remove that recipe. Copy it down in a notebook, physically or digitally. Save it somewhere only you can remove it. Trust me, looking for a recipe only to find out it's been wiped off the internet is so fucking sad. I've learned my lesson one too many times.
