I voted in the last two elections and had no reason to think my registration wouldn't be valid for this one--when I went to check, it said it was "pending" and "needed additional steps" and if I hadn't checked I would have had no reason to think I wasn't good to go until the day of. bogus!!!! Georgia added an online portal that lets you cancel other people's voter registrations if you have all the requisite personal information (like the stuff that keeps getting leaked in massive data breaches).

Supposedly this was so people could cancel the registrations of dead relatives, but like. There's apparently no requirement to prove that the person is dead.

The law also makes it so people have to go in person to defend their right to vote if the Board of Elections approves the challenge to your registration (the law indicated what things sound as sufficiant informtaition to warrant an in persom hearing and some of it is known to be unreliable) . It is important to note that they have been denying a lot of the challenges because they are based on little to no real evidence. Even so, these floods of voter challenges from random citizens about other random citizens is a total drain on elections judges resources and make it a lot harder for the Board of Elections to actually do their job

Trying to mostly stay away from politics on this blog, but today there’s something I just need to say.

Kamala Harris just defied DECADES of inside-the-Beltway “wisdom” by picking Walz as her running mate instead of Shapiro. The gray-hairs were probably all telling her she had to go with Shapiro to court the independents. Instead of picking the moderate, staunchly pro-Israel guy, she went with a full-on progressive with a strong LGBTQ+, pro-choice, pro-union record.

She’s making a leap of faith here. She’s betting that progressives, young people, and marginalized people will show up for her if she shows that she’s listening. As someone who lived through several decades when progressives didn’t have a voice even in the Democratic party, I can’t begin to tell you how huge this is.

In the coming months, you will no doubt read/hear things about Harris or Walz that you won’t like. Some of it may even be true. There may well already be things you don’t like about her.

Unfortunately, the choice isn’t between a perfect candidate and an imperfect candidate. The choice is between an imperfect candidate and possibly the most disgusting man on the planet, a guy who isn’t even trying to hide his plans to destroy the US. If Palestine is your #1 issue, know that he will do everything he can to pour gas on the flames until there’s nothing left.

Harris made the choice to listen to progressive voices. If she loses because we didn’t show up for her in huge numbers, we’ll likely be wandering in the wilderness for decades more while the planet burns around us.

(Oh, and we’ll need to show up again in ‘26. Let’s not make the same mistake we made in 2010, when the left stayed home after electing Obama and Republicans won big everywhere, which led to the extreme gerrymandering we’re still dealing with in many states.)

Oh BTW, it's important that as many people vote for Harris as possible, because we don't want a scenario where the votes are close enough that it might be taken to court (much less the conservative-leaning Supreme Court) and ruled in Trump's favor. everyone keeps saying “the bar is on the ground” because it’s a relief that kamala harris can string together a coherent sentence and doesn’t have one foot in the grave. and yeah!!!! it is!!! the bar is so far on the ground that it’s sunk into the soil!!!

if donald trump gets voted in, we will never have the opportunity to raise that bar. because project 2025 will effectively make him a king and the supreme court has already given him immunity. our voices will mean less than nothing.

but with harris we have a chance. we can say “we are tired of choosing the most competent of incredibly incompetent candidates.” by voting in harris we can say “this is the standard we are expecting from the moment forward and we will not go back.”
