fanfic writers who type their works directly onto ao3 instead of copy-and-pasting from elsewhere have no fear. fear fears them.
nobody “writes like ai” as long as they write, then they write. period. there’s no “writing like ai”. because by saying someone “writes like ai”, you’re implying that ai actually writes and that ai is the blueprint. but what ai does is mimic human-made works.
ai writes (aka they’re mimicking) like humans. not the other way around.
saying “this writer writes like ai” is the equivalent of saying “your work looks like those other works that copied yours”

This.
Speaking for myself, it's true that writing can get stressful, especially when I get writers block, but the difference is that I could have written all my fics until now, and keep them in my Google drive. But I chose to post them on Ao3, instead.
"Oh, but SC can't take criticism."
"Readers also have an opinion."
Wrong. I can take criticism as long as it's constructive and don't mind readers saying what they think as long as they do it in a respectful way.
As a reader, don't come tell me what I should have done or that a certain character wouldn't "say that" or act a certain way, because if I wrote him/her to say and/or act that certain way in my fic, it's because he/she does.
There was a reader who once commented that (AO3) was a public website and that people could get curious and comment, which is partially true.
People can indeed ask questions, but when it comes to the Privacy category, AO3 has this following options:
Which means that, in the end, and to put it in simple terms: a reader only comments if, when and how the writer allows him/her to do so.
And of course there's also the block button (that I won't hesitate to use) in case the reader truly crosses a fucking line.
I'm a reader too, and although I'm not one to comment on other writer's works often, I know that all of what I'm saying in this post, applies to me as well.
Respecting people and their works, is one of the easiest things you can do.
If something in that fic is not your cup of tea, drop it. Leave quietly.
Because otherwise you'll be disrespecting and harassing real people over fictional characters.
And that's disgusting.
fanfic writers deserve to be able to do things that will land them on the news without any consequences at least once a month, because imagine being kind enough to let people read your works—that you write for yourself and your own enjoyment—for free (also see my em dash that I refuse to let ai take from me?) and then some entitled asshole thinks they can just say whatever they want.
nobody “talks like chatgpt”. chatgpt talks like human, because it was trained on how human talked and it was trained to mimic how human wrote.
public bookmarks are public. I am begging more people to realize and remember this. anybody, including the writers, can see the comments you leave on your public bookmarks.
this type of comment is the exact reason more and more writers stop sharing their works online. ai witch hunt, speculations and accusations harm the writing community as much as ai does, if not more. by leaving this type of comments, you are helping ai destroy the writing community.
things I won’t let ai take away from human writers
em dash
“not x, not y, but z”
short sentence stacking as a stylistic choice
none of these belong to ai. these are all what human writers have been writing since day one, way before ai was invented. ai was trained to mimic how human writers write — so em dash, not x not y but z and short sentence stacking would never have been used by ai at all if ai hadn’t learned and mimicked them from human writers.
no, you are not “fighting against ai” by accusing every work that has em dash, not x not y but z or short sentence stacking in it as ai-generated, you are helping ai harm the writing community by engaging in witch hunt and scaring human writers away from creating/sharing their works for fear of being wrongly accused of using ai.
speculations, accusations and ai witch hunt harm the writing community as much as ai does, if not more.
working on my tumblr comeback (aka I’m writing again) (YIPPIIIIII)
"its just a silly little hobby" no dude my soul is literally trapped in my google docs. i physically cannot leave. or the characters will start screaming.
These remind me of this drawing by Franz Kafka from the 1900s. We've been feeling this way for a long time.
prev, i'm sure you mean my guy Leonid Pasternak
why does he have the exact same vibe as Ben Affleck Smoking

makes me sad when people run their own fics (or anybody else’s fics) through an ai checker.
1. an ai checker itself is, I believe, ai.
2. ai checker is known to be unreliable. it’s known to have incorrectly flagged human-made works as ai, and ai-generated works as human-made.
3. ai itself is trained on real human’s works, in order to mimic real human’s works and how real humans write. and whether or not you like it, ai as a writing tool is getting better and more developed. because it has more and more works to train on. so by running a fic through its machine, you are giving it more work to train on.
running a fic through an ai checker will not actually prove anything. it will either make you question yourself as a writer, or it will open a door for other writers to get harassed and wrongly accused of using ai.
if you suspect somebody’s fic is ai and if that bothers you, click away from the fic. harassing the writer or making a call out post will only encourage witch hunt behavior, and witch hunt behavior means innocent writers can and will get wrongly accused too. again, you cannot know for sure if a fic is ai unless the author themself says so. but even then, the best thing to do if it bothers you is click away, block the writer, scroll past the work. harassment, accusations and call out posts do more harm than good to the writing community.
“but why shouldn’t we harass writers if they admit to using ai”
1. under no circumstances will I condone harassment. I believe there are better, more productive ways to solve a problem.
2. chances are that harassing writers who openly use ai won’t make them stop using ai. it will just make them hide the fact they use ai — therefore their works are no longer tagged as ai, therefore you can’t know for sure that it’s ai, therefore there’s a chance of you, or anybody who is otherwise against ai, reading and giving it kudos without knowing that it’s ai.
3. the most efficient way you can avoid ai-generated works is if “writers” tag these works as ai. they will almost certainly stop tagging their works as such if you harass them.
i love fics that feel so... grown. fics about adults that were written by adults who have years of life experience under their belts who pour that into their writing. fics where you can tell this is a person who has lived through a marriage or a divorce or a child or children or parent death or any number of Huge Life Events because the way they write with an emphasis on the highs and lows of the human experience rather than an emphasis on tropes (not throwing shade) is just so. oh man, it's just so fucking good. if my blorbos are grown men, grown women, grown people, i love it when they feel like grown people, not just extensions of the (young) author's imagination. (still not throwing shade). you know?
this is like just a fourth of a whole musical medley addressing that you can’t live like the simpsons anymore. harsh :(

“I get it, you’re saying I’ll have a tough time finding a job like my dad’s.”
“No, no, kid. I’m saying you’ll never find a job like your dad’s, and you’ll have a tough time finding something significantly worse.”
Its true and they should say it
