Let me tell y’all, as someone who does drag in Austin, TX, seeing your friends become part of national media coverage because of this is pretty fucking wild.

The far right kind of honed in on Brigitte (queen in pink) as the object of all their ire, and the moment she saw that happening she kind of seized on it. Brigitte is AFAB, nonbinary, and asexual out of drag (these are all things she’s very public about, I’m not outing her). She knew that a right wing hate movement that is obsessed with portraying drag as something sexual done by pedophilic gay men wouldn’t know how to deal with her. So she stepped up and basically was like “you want to make me the face of this? Fine. I’ll use that opportunity to show every single one of you how wrong and ridiculous you are.” And it’s been such a curve ball for them, it’s been working. They don’t know what to do with an AFAB queen. She ruins all of their arguments. They don’t know how to write their laws in a way that excludes her from doing drag without being so broad it excludes literally half the population of Texas from existing, and that’s what is a huge part of these laws not holding water. She also has been pretty tirelessly doing a lot of very public activism, and was the only individual drag performer part of the suit against the state of Texas.

It hasn’t been easy for her, because obviously being a public figure like this means getting a lot of hate. But it’s also cool as hell. And leads to hilarious moments like the fucking Daily Mail writing bullshit like “Bandit CLAIMS she was born a woman” and her literal biological mother being like “so as an authority who was indeed there…”

oh my god this is me. i was addicted to designer amphetamines and completely delusional at the time of writing this. i had lost forty pounds and thought i was hot shit. i thought i was the reincarnation of Kurt Vonnegut. this was serious, and my friends laughed when they saw this go viral on twitter. it made me realize i had issues and im sober now. im also shocked i managed to stay employed at that time. Jonathan Eig was deep in the Duke University archives researching his new biography of Martin Luther King Jr. when he made an alarming discovery: King’s harshest and most famous criticism of Malcolm X, in which he accused his fellow civil rights leader of “fiery, demagogic oratory,” appears to have been fabricated.

“I think its historic reverberations are huge,” Eig told The Washington Post. “We’ve been teaching people for decades, for generations, that King had this harsh criticism of Malcolm X, and it’s just not true.”

The quote came from a January 1965 Playboy interview with author Alex Haley, a then-43-year-old Black journalist, and was the longest published interview King ever did. Because of the severity of King’s criticism, it has been repeated countless times, cast as a dividing line between King and Malcolm X. The new revelation “shows that King was much more open-minded about Malcolm than we’ve tended to portray him,” Eig said.

Haley’s legacy has been tarnished by accusations of plagiarism and historical inaccuracy in his most famous book, “Roots,” but this latest finding could open up more of his work to criticism, especially “The Autobiography of Malcolm X: As Told to Alex Haley” — released nine months after Malcolm X’s assassination in 1965.

Malcolm X, a member of the Nation of Islam, had frequently attacked King and his commitment to nonviolence, going so far as to call King a “modern Uncle Tom.” But his criticism often had “strategic purposes,” Eig said.

In acting as “a foil” to King, his message had more value to the media. “King saw value in being a foil to Malcolm sometimes, too. But I think at their core they had a lot in common. They certainly shared a lot of the same goals,” Eig said.

Eig, who previously wrote acclaimed biographies of Muhammad Ali and Lou Gehrig, said he found the fabrication in the course of his standard book research for “King: A Life,” due out May 16. When a subject has given a long interview, he’ll look through the archives of the journalist who conducted it, hoping to find notes or tapes with previously unpublished anecdotes.

He did not find a recording of Haley’s interview with King in the Haley archives at Duke, but he did find what appears to be an unedited transcript of the full interview, likely typed by a secretary straight from a recording, Eig said. Eig provided The Post with a copy of the transcript.

On page 60 of the 84-pagedocument, Haley asks, “Dr. King, would you care to comment upon the articulate former Black Muslim, Malcolm X?”

King responds: “I have met Malcolm X, but circumstances didn’t enable me to talk with him for more than a minute. I totally disagree with many of his political and philosophical views, as I understand them. He is very articulate, as you say. I don’t want to seem to sound as if I feel so self-righteous, or absolutist, that I think I have the only truth, the only way. Maybe he does have some of the answer. But I know that I have so often felt that I wished that he would talk less of violence, because I don’t think that violence can solve our problem. And in his litany of expressing the despair of the Negro, without offering a positive, creative approach, I think that he falls into a rut sometimes.”

That is not how King’s response appeared in the published interview. While the top part is nearly identical with the transcript, it ended in Playboy like this: “And in his litany of articulating the despair of the Negro without offering any positive, creative alternative,I feel that Malcolm has done himself and our people a great disservice. Fiery, demagogic oratory in the black ghettos, urging Negroes to arm themselves and prepare to engage in violence, as he has done, can reap nothing but grief.”

Some of the phrases added to King’s answer appear to be taken significantly out of context, while others appear to be fabricated:

After casting an open invite for people between the ages of 18 and 60 who previously had a mild case of COVID-19, Romano-Silva and colleagues in the preliminary study tested a group of 130 volunteers comprised mostly of women with a mean age of 38 years about four to six months post-infection with mild COVID-19. “We found mild COVID was associated with the development of important persistent cognitive deficits even in younger adults,” Romano-Silva says.

Researchers found 1 in 4 showed significant cognitive impairment in visuoconstruction skills — the visual ability to spatially reproduce designs or patterns — matching the increased levels of inflammation they were seeing on blood panels as well as in neuroimaging.

The researchers ruled out vision problems with neurological and ophthalmological exams. In addition, they conducted a battery of tests: psychiatric and cognitive assessments, and MRI and PET/CT neuroimaging. When they compared results of these tests with the drawings, they say the alterations were consistent. Those who were drawing the bad copy showed increased volume of white matter on their brain MRIs, likely due to swelling from inflammation, while their PET images showed decreased brain glucose uptake, which researchers surmised was possibly due to cells being less active and thus consuming less glucose.

Romano-Silva adds it’s “really worrying” because the group’s mean age was 38 and mostly highly educated professionals such as physicians and nurses, as recruitment took place during the initial stage of the pandemic. Interestingly, he notes participants did better on the memory and recall portion of the test, drawing the complex figure from memory better after five minutes and again after 30 minutes. “This shows it’s specialized to visuospatial organization,” Romano-Silva says. “A person looks at it and cannot organize visuospatially what they are seeing. But by memory, they are able to recruit other areas of the brain so they can make the drawing much better.”

I want to add the images from this study because they are chillingly illustrative of what is going on here:

The pen drawing were done while the participants were looking at the image! They did a better job five minutes later, and had even closer results after 30 minutes which suggests that it's pretty pure visuospatial impairment and calling on other parts of the brain to help reconstruct the image works over time.

Unfortunately, a lot of people who have been impaired in this way are still driving, which very much relies on quick reaction times and good visuospatial skills. I'd be really interested to see collision statistics for the past couple years compared to pre-covid levels.

My dad thinks it’s funny that I used to cry when he raised his voice. I freak out whenever some one does. Once my director did, and I started crying I couldn’t stop. I’m glad to see I’m not alone…

This is so important– seeing how common this is– and I also want you all to know that this is not normal. It isn’t something instinctively ingrained into women, to be afraid of men. There is no natural state of men being a threat that women constantly have to be afraid of. This is cultural. So many women and girls here have a mutual understanding of this feeling, and I think it really shows an unsettling truth about our society, particularly about how men are raised to act and how so many women have this defensive reaction gradually develop. It’s so important that these people have their voices heard, because it teaches us about problems that we just can’t deny the existence of any longer.

I’m glad I’m not the only one

And like, to contextualize it as cultural: I DON’T have this.

In my formative years, all the men I grew up around were safe. I knew, deep and absolute, that all of them would defend me with their lives as a child, and also would comfort and help me. (Sometimes they weren’t GOOD at it, but they would.) I have no personal context for men as any more dangerous than women (and I have plenty of context for women as Immediately, physically dangerous).

I don’t love raised voices, but I don’t find myself anymore scared of them if they’re male than if they’re female (or if I can’t tell/there’s no obvious connection). Because I’m me, all raised voices just kick in my fight response*: I wanna know who’s yelling and I want to make them stop immediately.

I’m also well aware than I’m unusual. And why. So.

Like I think it is very very common for women* to have it more intensely for men*, but frankly I know men who have it with men (just they often forget to include themselves in that category, so it’s “men who are not me”, or they are not conscious of the fact that their voice has raised, or whatever), and I know lots of women and men who just have it for Everyone.

And I think a lot of women have had a specific kind of bad experience with men where the physical violence or threat (open or unacknowledged) thereof came from that end of the spectrum; and so on.

So I think it is very useful for people who fall into the category “perceived as Men for whatever value of ‘man’ exists in the mainstream of your society” to be aware that yes, unfortunately, society at large has made it so that the external signs of anger from you are, by and large, going to be more threatening/scary than you might expect to an unpredictably large number of people, especially women (see footnote) around you.

That doesn’t mean you’re evil for being angry (everyone gets angry) but it does mean that if you’re not wanting to accidentally terrorize the people around you, it will benefit you significantly if you pay really close attention to your volume and your posture (and maybe take a break from the situation if you think that’s beyond you), because it is going to be an element that Affects This Situation Disproportionately.

*please imagine a very broad category here, I have a headache and attempting to find succinct readable ways of elaborating is beyond me; we’re also talking about Society at Large so large squishy arbitrary categories are unfortunately germane here

I need people to understand that this is by definition a bias. And it ties into a lot of the issues masc people face within queer spaces, how many of us have heard stories of men or trans women with non-passing voices getting pushed out of queer spaces because of their voices?

I understand trauma, I’m extremely traumatized in several ways, but this is used to control a conversation and narrative quite often.

If “men’s voices” are frightening and therefore anyone who sounds “like a man” needs to go out of their way to police their own tone in times of stress, that is going to wind up hurting people with no intention to harm.

A lot of trans women can’t pass their voices for feminine, I know I can’t. And it’s a huge problem that we have to suppress most of our anger because it’s “triggering”.

We face oppression and if we try to talk about it, it’s “triggering”.

We try to relax in spaces that should be safe for us and get told it’s “triggering” just for us to speak.

“If you’re angry and raising your voice, people might be intimidated” isn’t something that should apply to a specific subset of people, that should be a broad statement, and I guarantee you that women can absolutely be just as terrifying when angry.

If you wouldn’t expect a cis woman to police her own tone like this, then you shouldn’t expect anyone else to.

This is a double standard and it’s used to shut down discussions pertaining to abuse and discrimination.

Fortunately I absolutely think it would benefit women (of any description) to consider whether their impact on the people around them is what they want it to be, or if it might be causing harm, and also to consider the effect they want to have on the people around them, and whether that desire is best served by the way they are currently presenting themselves, and the actions they’re currently taking, and the volume they’re using and the posture they’re taking. I actually think this is beneficial for literally everyone.

I also did not say that I “expected” anyone to “police [their] own tone”, fortunately. I suggested that being aware of this dynamic might be beneficial/have helpful results if people to whom it applied wanted to avoid accidentally causing the effect of terror. Which I said because that literally was what I meant.

Sometimes, of course, one wants to deliberately cause the effect of terror, and that is something completely different and not part of what I was referring to. And sometimes one does not care what one is accidentally doing, for another round of reasons, some I would consider good and some I would consider less good, but my consideration of it is besides the point; this was also not part of what I was referring to.

I was, in fact, genuinely noting “yes, this is a thing; if this has never occurred to you before/isn’t something you know, here’s some knowledge! If you want to avoid accidentally having this effect on people around you, here are some things to note (that you may not have noted before).”

And that’s quite literally all.

Look, the thing is, this is so easy to misinterpret that the reblogs of this post are full of people saying things like “everyone AFAB has this kind of trauma so maybe men should regulate their tone” which, one, misgenders non-vocally passing trans women inherently, and presents a dynamic of “amab people are a threat to afab people”- a blatant TERF argument.

This argument needs nuance. We get ignored literally whenever we calmly try to talk about our oppression, and the moment we get agitated at all because we’re literally dying and cis people don’t care, we’re told now we’re being too aggressive.

This can’t work as a sweeping statement. If it is used as one, it will silence people.

I have seen transmasc individuals who had a big voice drop on T also describe struggling with feeling like they have to reign in their voice, even when expressing excitement for fear of scaring people. I myself grew up with a father with serious anger management issues where there was a lot of screaming and a lot of fear on my part as a child. Idk what the solution here is since a lot of individuals do genuinely have trauma from having shitty men in their life but also expecting non-shitty individuals with deeper/louder voices to always have a calm and even tone seems unrealistic.

Not just unrealistic but actively damaging to marginalized men. Black and brown men that exhibit anger are characterized as “violent” by the white majority.

Growing up terrified of loud voices I instinctively learned to lower my pitch when speaking with anyone. As someone who didn’t fit into the arbitrary standards of masculinity it was safer to appear “less threatening” even if I didn’t realize that’s what I was doing.

And not to put too fine a point on it but “being aware of how you’re perceived” and “policing your tone” has no practical distinction when dealing with white heteronormative society.

I’m a trans guy without hormones so I normally sound very… Small? But I know how to Yell, to project my voice and it drops deeper. I’ve scared my coworkers and sometimes patients doing that, and I’m sure some of it is just surprise that it came out of my mouth, but I also know it’s from the ingrained fear of “loud yelling, something bad is happening” too. I always feel bad so I don’t do it often, I don’t really need to.

a tiny problem

this probably hasn't made the news in other countries - huge mining company Rio Tinto managed to lose this little capsule (8 x 6 mm) somewhere in West Australia:

it's caesium-137, the stuff that has made Chernobyl uninhabitable, and you don't want to be standing within 5-10 meters of it, because it's blasting out beta and gamma rays. you REALLY don't want to pick it up, because it'll give you radiation burns.

what's nuts is it seems to have somehow escaped from its "secure" container and fallen out of a bolt hole while being transported, and then nobody noticed for TWO WEEKS.

anyway there are fire fighters on their sixth day of scouring 1,400 km (!) of desert road right now, but it's so small that it may never be found (I think the detection radius with the equipment they're using is maybe 20m). it's so small that it could have stuck in a car's tire treads, or been picked up by an unfortunate bird or other wildlife. it has a half-life of 30 years, which means it'll be dangerously radioactive for centuries.

it's just an incredible fuckup on so many levels.

When I turned 17, we ordered a cake at the grocery store for my party, as we’d done many times before. If you wanted something written on the cake you’d write it into a section of the order form. We requested, very simply, “Happy Birthday Courtney”. When we went to pick it up the day of the party, this is what we got.

The bakery employees had absolutely no explanation for this. The order form, attached to the box, very clearly did not contain any of those extra names. Whomever had done the writing was no longer in, so there was no one to ask how this had happened. The fact that the name ‘Juan’ is misspelled bewilders me to this day. (I’ve never seen ‘Miley’ without the E, either, but it’s believable that someone might spell it that way.) Did this cake slip in from an alternate universe where I’m one quarter of a set of Hispanic quadruplets? Dyslexic Hispanic quadruplets, maybe?

This cake became the focal point of my party. At least two of my friends regularly called me ‘Courtney Mily Jaun Pablo’ for years to come. My siblings and I still reference it sometimes, eleven years later. It is probably the funniest thing ever to occur at any birthday celebration of my life, and may well remain so for the rest of my days.

I love a botched cake.
